[Poll] Lefties in the Nukes

wolfen alluded to an abundance of southpaws in the nuclear workforce on the thread, "does musical talent dwell within nuclearworkers".  has anyone else noticed this phenomena?  I once was on a crew that had 14 lefties out of a total of 23, at least i think that was the ratio.  maybe housepuke and barleybuddy can help me out here.  anyway, that was the most disporportionate crew i was on, also one of the bestest!

Judging from the poll so far, Lefties are in a much greater abundance in the nuke industry than the national average, which I think is much less than 10% of the population.

There has to be a connection.  Any theories???

Born Right Handed, Fell from a castle wall in europe at the tender age of 11 and shattered my right arm and wrist. Cast and rebraking for about 8 months.  Went left out of necessity and discovered I was a closet southpaw.  Came out of hiding and found out the Girls liked us southpaws better.

Sloglo, the crew you mentioned...is that a reference to Bettis those many years ago?  I don't recall the ratio 'cause I was just learnin' my way around back then. ;D

 I am a natural Lefty who was assimilated into the right-hand world by 'old-school' teachers. About the only common task I can't do 'right' is cut my steak. Even when I broke my left hand, I had to hold my steak knife pecil-style on my left hand.
I've heard of hard-core righties who were completely helpless when they injured the right paw.

I am a rightie.  I am also the only person I know who can/will toss high pressure gas/liquid cylinder between hands without looking at them while walking somewhere.  Is that strange?  I figure, if I drop one and explodes, in all likelyhood, I'll be dead instantly. ;)
I can also shoot either left or right handed.  Unfortunately, my right eye is around 20/2000, and the left is about 20/1500, those are my real vision records.  Therefore, for accurate long range shots, I use the left.  I first learned this little talent last in 2002, when I fell down the stairs and crushed my right facial nerve.  I had Belle's Palsey for about a year and had to wear any eye patch full of moisture gel for most of it.  I was unable to close my eye at all.  I still smile crooked, but the rest is better.  I just refrain from smiling whenever possible.

Well wizenhiemer, I mean Rain Man, to answer your question, my twinkie and I are healthy and very well adjusted right handers today.  Although growing up we had developed our own language throughout childhood and still to this day start and finish each others sentences.  It's a twin-triplet thing.

I throw righty, but everything else is leftie.
In 1st and 2nd grade, my teachers tried to 'rehabilitate' me.....didn't work then....hasn't worked since.
I don't have the numbers, but I recall reading that Lefties are statistically overrepresented in techincal fields.
I heard Einstien and Bethoven were lefties whild Hitler and Nixon were riighties.

I'm one of the confused ones, also. I write and eat with my left, but just about everything else with my right. I can also write forward and backward at the same time.. I think that means I'm using both sides of my brain at the same time. Or maybe it means that I'm just weird. Not weird, GIFTED.

I am a "righty" but, being a musician also, I can do a lot of things just as well with my left hand.  I remember back in 2nd grade I had a bicycle accident and I wasn't able to use my right hand to write.  I had to finish writing a story about "Charlotte's Web" so I finished it writing "LEFTY".  By the time I was done writing that story, you couldn't tell the difference between my right-handed or left-handed writing.  Now that I'm an "old man" I can still write left-handed legibily although I prefer writing right-handed.  I have also played both trumpet and trombone both "right" and "left".   BTW...who says lefty's make better lovers???????

I'm a "natch" lefty.  Interesting that US stated stats are ~16 -20 % left.  In whole world, it is supposed to be slightly lower.  Plenty of places still actively practice latent 'conversion' of young people (students) from L to R - for same stupid endemic reason educators and others used to do in USA. 

My opinion only, I bet that it is much more likely the 'true' left dominant population WW is probably 33%.  Lotta folks converted at early age.  In my case, I write with a 'crook' hooking my left hand becuase I was never shown how to position my writing tablet back when practicing going from Block to Cursive in like kindergaden or 1st g.  Too hard to break later.  L prob much more ambidextrous than R handers.

From my limited personal stats observation, Lefties seem to be way over-represented in the Sciences.

From my limited personal stats observation, Lefties seem to be way over-represented in the Sciences.

I have two sons that were deemed lefties by a public school system, and their mother thought it was great because that meant they were smarter than average. Of course, neither shows as much coordination with their left hand as their right.....

Actual lefties do seem to be much more common in Engineering and Scientific types of work.
