I just got here to Sizewell B mid-June. I have only sampled 7 or 8 local pubs so far and haven't found any that I didn't like (Eel's Foot, White horse, Regatta, Parrot and Punchbowl.....). The Adnams Bitter Beer is an aquired taste. They do have chilled beer that comes out of the tap.

It is tough to find lodging here this time of year (July - August) as this is Holiday time. Believe Mike when he speaks of expensive. The dollar is weak and the cost is high.

Sizwell B is the only PWR station in the UK. The rest are all AGR's or Magnox reactors.

I worked at Sizwell B last year for the outage. Its a great plant with a great bunch of people working there. The facilities inside the plant are nice. Its a well designed plant, being one of the new generation of PWR's.

The plant however is huge, and the layout if the BOP is confusing, and it really takes a while to get your way anywhere inside the RCA.

Most people either stay at Leicston, or Aldenburgh. I stayed at Aldenburgh, and its a really sleepy village that gets an large influx of holiday makers on the weekends and in season. It is expensive, but fortunately the British Company I worked for subsidised the accommodation. The per diem system in the UK is different to the USA. Rather then get a per diem, you basically pay less tax instead.

The accommodation I stayed in Aldenburgh was great. However in season at times you cannot find parking anywhere near your accommodation. The Fish and Chip shops in Adenburgh are a big attraction ( a peculiar British thing), with people standing on long queues to get Fish and Chips.

There are quite a few bard (puns) in Aldenburgh,. When you are working shifts you have to stock up on groceries as by the time you finish your shifts all the shops are closed.

But otherwise had a great time there.

Being a born local and an MCR Operator feel free to ask away. 

Finding time between STO's here's a few words.  Accommodation can be hard to locate especially during the summer period, Pubs are all good and the locals are used to visitors.  English Fish n Chips are awesome next to the coast and the locally chippy in Aldeburgh has won several awards. 

The station sits next to an aging Magnox station now idle awaiting cash to begin defueling and decommissioning.  The local area is classified as a SSSI (Area of outstanding natural beauty) and there are many coastal walks to enjoy.  We have several nature reserves local to the station, the best known would be Minsmere Bird Reserve.

Leiston is the nearest town to Sizewell and was built around the Garrett works originally making Steam Engines during the early 1900, a museum now stands where the old foundries once worked.  During WW2 Garretts built munitions and the Americans arrived with their Mustangs at Leiston Airfield.  Much of the Airfield has gone although there still remains part of the runway and hanger buildings.  Each year at the end of May a lone Mustang takes to the sky and flys over the old airfield.

The Sizewell site is now owned and operated by EDF and is currently ear marked for the one of the next generation of Nukes to sit along side us called Sizewell C which will be a twin EPR Reactor.

New build is just begining, originally we were informed that by 2017 Hinkley C will be operational with Sizewell C following shortly but who knows....

Our next Refuelling Outage is in September and is due to be 35 days.  We have to remove/replace some of our PZR heaters, RCP internal replacement plus the usual stuff!!! its goin to be busy.
