I liked VC when I was there in 84'.  Good outage, good house folks and easy pace.  Was a little out of the way, and at that time, the bars closed Saturday at Midnight until Monday.  Argggg.

VC Summer has a very laid-back attitude and the highest median quality of house people I have ever had the pleasure to work with, so SHOULD be an awesome plant to work, but...

1) The bean-counters are in control right now, so be prepared to get nickel/dimed to death.

and

2) They still haven't gotten a grip on how to do an outage quickly...general lack of job planning, work coordination, etc.

and

3) I had hoped they might have a "Mid-Atlantic" attitude like some of the other Carolina plants, but the area is definitely more "Deep South"...that may be either an advantage OR a disadvantage (depending on YOUR personal outlook), but something you should consider before you go.

good plant to work as a road tech.  they have some quirky rules but they treat you very good.  there are hints of the old days there during your "out" time.  kind of a long drive to the plant if you want to stay by anything but still had a good time.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission Approves License Extension for SCE&G's V.C. Summer Nuclear Station
Thursday April 29, 10:00 am ET


COLUMBIA, S.C., April 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G), principal subsidiary of SCANA Corporation (NYSE: SCG - News), announced today that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved the company's application for a 20-year license extension for its V.C. Summer Nuclear Station.

The new license, which SCE&G expects to receive next week, will allow the plant to operate through 2042. SCE&G applied for the new license in the fall of 2002.

"There are so many benefits that come with having the plant's license extended," Senior Vice President of Nuclear Operations Steve Byrne said. "It allows us to keep almost 700 megawatts of power on the grid. This delays the need for new plants on our system, and that means lower rates for our customers.

"Additionally, the plant provides nearly 750 jobs in the area and contributes millions of dollars annually to the Fairfield County tax base."

The V.C. Summer Nuclear Station began operation in 1982. SCE&G owns two- thirds of the plant's 1,000-megawatt capacity while the South Carolina Public Service Authority (Santee Cooper) owns the remaining third.

Summer Station represents approximately 14 percent of SCE&G's generating capacity. At full operation, the plant is capable of providing power to more than 650,000 homes.

vc summer had to be the most anal retentive place i have ever worked.  that aside i think all the techs and supervisors there were pretty good to work with.

From what I hear, The Columbiana Mall of I-26 in Columbia, is the place to shop, and has a number of nearby "chain" restaurants.
VC Summer is out in the middle of nowhere, so if you're looking for entertainment, you'll have to head south to Columbia (~ 45 minutes south of the plant)

VC Summer is out in the sticks, but only 15 or 20 minutes to civilization. The new mall on I-26 has plenty of eating places and some pretty nice. Camping is available 13 miles from the plant at WoodSmoke Family Campground, but it fills up fast. Hope to see Henry there this spring. Al Eidson

Overall had a good time there. most of the people were easy to get along with. was kinda hard getting used to going to the can in scrubs, booties and gloves, but maybe i have been away from the comercial side way to long !! either way the drive to work from columbiana was tolerable.

Got a phone calll from a recruiter from SCEG inviting me up for an interview for a Chemistry Specialist opening.

Any insight to this company/position. She did not mention which plant.

The only nuke they own would be VC Summer. I've never been there but have worked with almost all of their HP's and they are awsome! I've never heard a negative comment about the plant either, which considering HP's, that's saying something. :P

I've been employed by SCE&G here at VC Summer for a little over three years, and it's a great place to work. The folks are laid-back, friendly, easy-going (typical southern hospitality), and they get the work done with very little B.S. from management. SCE&G only owns one nuke (VC Summer), but will be building another unit, with a projected on-line date of 2015.
Summer is located ~1 hour northwest of Columbia, SC, on the shore of Lake Monticello. It is in the "middle-of-no-where", and most folks live around the Columbia area.
As for the company benefits, they're pretty good - no complaints.
The interview wil be a "targeted selection", where you are interviewed by a panel of existing chemistry department employees. The interview questions are developed by Human Resources, and hence are somewhat bizarre, having very little reference to your experience as a chemistry technician! Don't let that throw you. It may sound cliche, but just be yourself, and have a copy of your resume with you for reference.

I recieved a call from sce&g to interview for the Chemistry specialist position at the vc summer nuclear facility.  Has anyone ever worked there or heard anything about it.  I have a degree in chemistry and have worked in the field for 8 years, but none of my experience is nuclear.  Any pointers would be helpful.

What is the turnover like in the Ops Department? I am looking at an ops position at VC Summer and would like to become licensed as an RO at some point (a 5 year plan would be nice). Is this realistic there?

It's not exactly been "rats-off-a-sinking-ship".
1. One young lady got SCE&G to pay for here Associate's degree in HP and then she resigned to go work for Canberra.
2. One gentleman retired
3.Another gentleman had his position terminated
4. Another was promoted to a position in QA,
5. and another was promoted to HP Instructor.

For the most part, it has been normal attrition in the HP group. I've been at Summer for five (5) years now, and enjoy it there. The folks are great to work with. There are the malcontents (un-happy about one thing or another), the gossips, and the dumb-asses, but they soon make themselves known, and you steer clear of them.

As for the area around Summer, most folks live down around the Columbia, Lexington or Saluda areas. Newberry and Pomaria, which are west of the plant across the Broad River, is home to many folks too.


As for Operations, staff retention appears to be rather steady...very little turnover if any.

That sounds about true for Summer Station, as there isn't much turnover or attrition at Summer.
Infact for a while in the early to late 90's there was hardly any if any.
Vc used to be a great place to work...I haven't been there in more than 10 years but it would have been a great place to go house & the area was great as well. Esp since they are poised to build a couple more units there(last i heard from a Certain QA person there  ;))

Anyway, while I don't have Summer experience, I can tell you they will be staffing up for replacements of their projected losses to retirement and new construction. Your timeline is not that challenging; almost any plant could meet that today.

Summer is a great place to work. Tom Gillespie and myself were the first rent-a- techs there with IRM in 1982 I think. Al Eidson and Randy Redmond were next with Numanco. As far as the coal pile goes, it ain't a bad gig at all.

I am an MM turned Radcon Tech on a tender in Guam. Just trying to learn as much as possible about the company before my interview. Their website doesn't reveal much.

I feel for you; I did that too (but not Guam).

The location is beautiful; I love the Midlands of SC. Columbia is a nice small city, and close enough to Charlotte (or even Atlanta) for day trips.

The nukeworker VC Summer page is probably the best place to start in learning about the area.

The bottom line on that page is a link with detailed results about this zip code. That site has tremendous amounts of Census Data in a useful format. Check out Lexington and neighboring counties to see what the region is like. Just remember to not put a city in the middle of your commute (like I do).

Feel free to sell them all your experience and abilities, but remember that contamination control is not like that in commercial power. You will have people working in 10,000 dpm/100cm2 (that is reading 1000 cpm on a smear, what you have called 4500 mickey mikes) without continuous coverage as a routine event!

The stuff we used to do for low level contamination, commercial does for VERY high levels (so it is useful experience).

Thanks, that helps. I just had my interview yesterday and boy was that an experience. All those scenario based questions reminded me of the tests we always have to take. All the interviewers seemed like easy going people. I definately want to move back to the south!

If they don't pick you up for RP, get in OPS. (I have done both commercial, and both are great jobs. But IMHO you can move up better from OPS)

I've been trying to find what the natural progression for both fields are but not much luck plus I dont understand all the acronyms. (little too much military crossing over) This plant does have an opening for an auxillary operator as well. It will definately be considered.

auxilliary operator is another word for non-licensed plant operator . There are more opportunities in Operations as opposed to Radcon. Either job is pretty good though.

In operations, once you get a license, a lot more doors are opened up for you. Most of the HP's at my plant seem to stagnate. Some of them transfer to Ops or chemisrty. With your background you would be better suited for Ops also HP jobs are pretty rare these days unless you want to be a road tech.

I was a house HP at VCS ( over 20 years) and I can tell you that you are pretty well stuck in HP once you are there. Very few get out. However, unlike a lot of other commercial plants, VCS has a lot of opportunities in HP to do a variety of things. If you just like being an HP that would be a great place to go.  HP supervision is the only place you can really move up to and there is a limited number of them. A couple have escaped to QC or HP training. VCS HPs are the lowest paid Commercial HPs in the country.  Really low. But the best d#&* group of HPs you could ever work with.
With a Navy nuke background you would fit better in Ops. You can move up further and the money is better. There is not a limited number of RO slots, infact they want all their operators to be reactor operator qualified. Operators have the ability to move to almost any group and have. Almost all inhouse posted jobs desire an operator and get them.
Think before you leap... what do you really want to be when you grow up??

I did my tour of the plant last week and these are some of the nicest guys i've ever met. Beautiful area as well. Can't wait to get started. By the way I've decided to go for ops.

Outage almost over, cavity decon complete.  Hated it!  If you didn't rock the boat, you were stuck doing routines and scaffolds and just walking around containment unless you had been there many outages or were shared resources, in which case you were used and abused.  If you rocked the boat, asked questions about the way they do business, asked about RWP's or coached any of the supervision, whether HP or other house disciplines, you were sent to somewhere you couldn't cause trouble, like the step-off pad or the equipment hatch.  Happened to three road techs right after three seperate occasions, none of which were their fault.  Most people say things like, "won't go back unless the mortgage is due", or "won't go back unless I'm hungry".  My new one is, "Won't go back unless an act of God."  Of course, God works in mysterious ways, so I won't say never. :(

I apologize for the way you were treated at VC Summer. Most of the folks in HP at Summer are good people, and treat folks with kindness and respect.  The manner in which Summer HP treated you folks explains the “cold” reception I felt whenever I walked into “The Dungeon”. I sensed we were treating you like crap, and I tried to welcome you folks, but failed miserably.
 
Please don’t rate everyone in HP at VC Summer based on the actions of  a couple of individuals. Like I said, there are many good people at Summer, and I’d like you (and your peers) to consider returning in the future.

Nope, the dayshift house were the ones pulling the strings, so I guess more house than you think are causing the problems.  I will say that there are some house that went above and beyond the call to make us feel welcome.  The thing that these folks share is that they were all former road techs and haven't fogotten their roots.

Listen I don't work there but what if what there saying is true?

That's right it is their rules and if it is true and they want people to come back they better wise up and straighten up,or they maybe doing their next outage mainly by themselves. Then hear them cry when they have to do work and they don't have contractors to do it.

I'm sure that their awesome people working there,but a few can really screw it up for the others.
I would have to say that VC Summer is different, but to make accusations based on hard feeling or 'he said that he heard', is inappropriate.  Bottom line is that it is their house, they pay the bills and you play by their rules.  We all have the choice to stay or go, to return or not.

Well I for one would have to defend Mr. Badkitty.  I can overlook the gator fan thing just this once.  Whether he owns stock or not (he probably does, it makes money) he always makes the call as he sees it.

I will say on my part that everyone has an opinion as to how the outage goes.  Dayshift, nightshift, rover, pool tech. Here is my opinion, however smelly:

I had a good time.  I was used as a pool technician.  I am a house tech here as a shared resource. I got to cover the continuous coverage jobs, LHRA work, and just generally nasty stuff.  I did spend quite a bit of time at the equipment hatch.  I was generally busy all of the time.  I don't get to do job coverage like that back at my "house" job.  It is good to get back to your core business skills.  I think it resharpens the blade.

I was treated great by the house and the Bartlett techs.  I saw some old friends that I have not seen in 20 years and I met some new ones (always do).  Some folks don't get to do exactly what they think they should.  I certainly did not expect to be doing some of the coverages that I did.  I look at it like this - I got paid for the time I worked.  I made and am still making a buttload of money here.  I have not been put in any dangerous situation.  Heck I have not been put in any situation without the house techs making sure that I understand what the workers are doing and most importantly where they are doing it.  Maybe overkill, but I think they want you to succeed.  After all your success insures their completion of the outage.
I can't say enough good things about the management from the VP on down.  Everyone has been extremely personable and helpful.  HP management (I can only speak for dayshift) has been great.  I have not received a wrong answer yet and I have gotten all of the help I can stand.

Bottom line: Good outage, I would come back, I like the house techs, I could work here as a house tech if I was smarter.......but then I run into the old dog thing.  If you don't want to come back, if you were treated unfairly in your eyes, then by all means don't return.  I have a couple of those plants on my resume.

Should be hiring some more people next year;  under the current plan and previsions for the two new plants, we have hired all we can for this year (as far as I understand).  I heard from HR that we should be looking for a new batch sometime early 2010.  The training center is running a systems class January to March for the 2009 class, so its likely that the hiring would be around April 2010 (we probably don't have the staff to support a new ACAD and systems class simultaneously).  That, and the RO class is scheduled to run at the same time.

They had a posting for AO/NLO positions back in January.  From what I've been told, those positions have been filled.  Possibly another round of hires in September 2010 and/or January 2011.

Harbison Blvd. (Exit 103 off Interstate 26) Offers shopping, dining and entertainment. Columbiana Mall is the main shopping center - but you will also find Wal-Mart, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Kohl's, etc. on this exit. The SCANA website has three instructor positions (HP, Chemistry and GET) posted for the Summer Nuclear Station. Consider this: within four (4) years, two GET Instructors opted to retire, one GET Instructor quit, and one HP Instructor "jumped on" a transfer opportunity to another position, versus having to deal with the overwhelming dose of daily BS and aggravation dealt by the supervisor having oversight over GET, HP and Chemistry.  As for me, I refused to be a mindless drone.
If a friend of mine were to apply for either of those positions, I'd encourage him or her to look for employment elsewhere.  -K

Yeah,---I seem to remember Sun Dog is right---I thought you just "left" from the hopey-changey buck job at savannah wonderland after being there for awhile also. What's the time interval and "scoop" for the VC Summer events and those at SRS?

so i made it through the POSS with no problems and the interview felt like it went well. From trolling through the threads it seems that VCS can take a little while if they are going to offer the job. Its been a week and haven't heard anything yet.  i know a few guys that work there and their experience for a response ranged from a day to 2 weeks. Can anyone vouch for this or describe their experience with them.
