Visited on a benchmarking trip in Oct. 2001.  Friendly people, very clean plant.  If we ever do labor-sharing with them I'd have to go at least once.  There are some things I'd like to bring back to Callaway from there, like the lake & the lodge.

There is many lodging around Wolf Creek. Some to save you money.
In Osage City, Ks (which is about 40 miles away) there is a Bed and Breakfast called "The RoseMary Inn" located at 210 Market St. phone number (785) 528-4498
It is a nice place and you might even get a good rate for weekly to monthly. Just ask them.
In Lyndon which is about the same distance. There is Lamont Hill. It's a motel with a resturant near by. Some of their cabin's have kitchenett's in them. (785) 828-3131
There are some in Lebo and at Beto Junction as well. But these are probably your cheaper ones. In Osage you might be able to even rent houses/trailers/apartments cheaper as well. You can call our local paper to find out what might be opened for your time of arrival. Osage County Chronicle (785) 654-3621.

I hope this helps.

I've worked several outrages at Wolf Creek. As for Burlington ks. All I can say is Burlington is an excellent example of why a limited gene pool is a bad idea!  (i)

Seriously, every time I went into a local shop for something, the clerk/owner would look at me puzzled like for a minute or two then invariabley say " You ain't from around here are you, you in for the outage?"  ::)

Wolf Creek is a fine place to work or visit, but don't go house. They hired Chicken George. You get hired for your offsite drinking abilities, work performance is secondary.  :o

Worked at WCNGS in 1985 during Initial Plant Start-up and our first child was born in Burlington, Kansas. Kristen Kanoelani is now 17!

Luthers Smoke House and the Rib Joint in Williamsburg; I will not forget.

I now understand that there are some of the finest folks in the Nation after traveling abroad. We rented the cheapest housing to date and two came with property in excess of 20 acres. When we traveled away from Westphalia or Melvern it took just about an hour to the big stores and 1 1/2 to Kansas City home of one of the finest baseball parks in the AL.

I was there for the I-70 World Series and wore my KC cap even when down 4 games to one. George Brett!

Learned how to hunt ducks from my pal William Parks and learned the way of life out on the Prarie. One the greatest experiences in my life because the people were like those I was used to in Hawaii with their hearts wide open. There is a lot of predjudice feelings across the globe and these folks looked beyond that.

At the Burlington Bowling Alley, you could purchase fried green pepper rings from a fellow RCT s (Steve Trembel?) grandmother or drive to Williamsburg for the greatest ribs in the world.

Many played pasture pool at the local nine hole course.

At the plant, we had a great time. I have never worked with a harder working group of people than I have on the prarie. Many of the folks came from the "country" where hard work was expected.

It was a great experience for my family and I because we learned a great deal about life from many in the local community.

This is where I am so, so greatful. The road has taught us more than that contained within the Radiological Sciences and to hear that BIMBO, Nuke1, spout of the other day??? Hummm? We will forget more. ::)

Many, such as Nuke1, fail to realize that college or grade school is only one example of a learning institution and that there are so many around us! As many of you know, the road is the best institution if you can handle the heat.

The road is an extremely violent atmosphere when you are young and these folks in Kansas, I tip my hat to, because of the tremendous amount of knowledge they passed to us not to mention the hospitality that in some cases can cure any kind of homesickness one may possess.

I now know what Milo is!!! Hehehehehe. And that a Meadow Lark (Kansas State Bird) is not a Quail!!!! OOOOPS! I got one. You can't eat a coot! Shoot! Ed, boil the coot with a two by four and eat the 2 x 4! ???

Mahalo for a wonderful experience! ;)

It's the only other nuclear plant I've ever been to besides Callaway. It's a beautiful plant. I had the chance to go back for a week this fall to help in their Performance Corner. Friendly people, sure it's in the middle of nowhere, but so is Callaway. If they invite me back, I'll go without hesitation. Great people out on the prairie, many of whom I'm proud to call my friends.

(Almost) Everybody knows there is a problem but does nothing about it.

True, to a certain extent - we, Bartlett, have watched the industry turn itself inside out so to speak going from more techs than slots now to more slots than techs - we've preached to our clients, prospective clients, and past clients for years about the state of the "road tech" supply out there...we've preached JHP programs, growing more JHP slots at outages, string'n outages together, better wages, diem - overall compensation packages, etc...I firmly believe the plant folk all agree that all of this has to change but when it comes down to it the power is with those that control the money flow...plants are scheduled to shutdown when they shutdown for 1 reason and 1 reason only - opportunity cost - or to say it another way - what time frame can we shutdown the plant so that we lose the least amount of revenue- not much we as a vendor can do except preach what we know, push for core groups, JHP programs, consecutive outage runs etc…its all in the hands of the Utilities.  This season most utilities that are going down will feel the crunch and not just on HP/Decon folk but also on Mechanical Maintenance, the Professional’s (CHP’s, Instructors, Engineers, Procedure Writers  etc…, and others.  This isn’t your daddy’s pre-deregulation nuclear power industry anymore.

Had a great time at the Creek.  One of those places when you leave you hope the best for them. The whole plant from training to the end was very nice.  The town people were also very nice.   The Cordinator was great (sucking up), but Nightshift Cord was overpaid and didnt do very much.  If you like to eat butter or Crisco its the place to go (inside joke for the nightshift people).  The management of HPs cared for us contractors and that was very nice.  The outage went great except for PZR overlays.  If you want to save all your money its the perfect place to go.(very secluded)  If you got sprint cell phone you wont being making too many phone calls unless you stand on the water tower.  Its Calloway without the breakroom and cards.  And I do wish them the best.

I'm an ex navy nuke (April 08 EAOS) and working for an inspection company.  They're offering me Nuke ASME inspector at Wolf Creek.  Now, I've looked through the forums, city-data, and a few other sites.  I keep coming up with nothing but good news about the place.  I know it's really small-town, but I'm moving with my wife and kids so that's a plus (I think.)

Is it really as good as I keep reading?  Please hit me with any and all pertinent info.  Thanks in advance.

Hi Adam,

I wouldn't want to work anywhere else.  Came here straight out of the Nav in 2004.  Lets see...

Schools - A single elem and middle and HS serve Burlington and New Strawn.  They used the revenue from Wolf Creek very well, and have good teachers, curriculum, sports, and facilities.

Town - Small.  One grocery store, one dept store, 3 gas stations, 2 stop lights, pizza hut, DQ, Sonic, Subway...  And misc little things.  Travel about 45 minutes to get to Walmart, and about an hour to get to Topeka.

Traffic - None, cept around the access road/gate during outage times.

People - Friendly here, friendly in town.

Crime - It exists, but at such a low level that it's of very little concern.

Things to do - Hunting, fishing, camping, boating... All big players..

Hope that helps.. I'll send you a PM as well...

Bill

Okay, so I'm out here in Burlington (wow is it cold, ~15F).  Really nice town with nice people.  Quiet and small.  First place I've ever been where people can successfully navigate a four way stop.  My wife likes it a lot here, too.  The rec center is great and we're having a look at the hospital tomorrow (we're expecting in June).  Once I get the formal offer from my company I'll know whether we're moving or not.  To anyone looking at coming out here, it looks great for families but looks boring for singles.

If I take it I suppose I'll see a lot of you for the fall outage.

As a new employee myself as well as my husband I can say so far its been great.  Im sure glad your wife came out here with you so she could look at everything its definately a good idea when your moving for work.  Glad to hear your expecting in June, as far as my experience of the Coffey County Medical Center it has been great very well managed and friendly staff.  Im sure you will be seeing a very good doctor for your baby our child goes to Dr. Braun. As far as living in a small town its great,  not alot to do but once you have that baby you wont have much time for the couples thing.  I wish you good luck in your new job and I hope that you and your family enjoy staying here and that you enjoy Wolf Creek I know I have.  Maybe we will see you around town or at work.

ELT, the Wolf Creek openings are generally listed on a site called kansasjoblinks.com.  I'll look around, but we just staffed a new NSO class... On the other hand, I've heard that we may hire off site for instant SRO's... This class is starting early next year.  Qualifications will be a degree, engineering, or the TESC will do fine, and PPWS quals.  You can IM me if you want more details.  Nothing that I know of up and coming in maintenance.

Thanks. I did find an outage posting for HP's etc. which I applied for.
I would really rather get something permanent as I have a family, but I would probably consider anything to get my foot back in the industry door. I am in the oil field now involved with drilling directional wells but we are getting hit hard by the financial meltdown. Mouths to feed, etc. so I am keeping all options on the table.

I did 6 and got out, and unfortunately did not finish EOOW/EWS quals before getting out, so I thing RO/SRO is probably out of reach for me.
I do like the area though, so hopefully an opportunity opens up.
Thanks for you help and let me know if anything pops up. :)

Happily, Tysons is currently closed down, which took our Somali guests which that company imported to other localities.  So, the smell is gone, for now, and the social integration problems are gone as well.

Just moved here.  Nice town.  Pretty, clean and very country.  Everbody's been pretty nice so far and the slaughterhouse problem is long gone.  Tyson still processes here, but without the kill floor there's no smell.  Dolly Madison makes the northwest part of town smell like frosting, but I don't mind that much. Wife and kids like it a whole lot better than Atlanta.  PM me if you have specific questions.

Lots of house jobs here.  Ops, Maintenance, and HP/RP.  Go to www.kansasjoblink.com (not 100% sure on the link) and they should have listings.  If you want a more direct approach, PM me and I'll see if I can get you a straight shot to HR.  I'm a resident contractor, but I can probably get you where you need to go.  (6 and out MM1/ELT/SS myself and I really lucked out getting the job I have.  If I can help, I will.)

Hello all. I was contacted today regarding an upcoming Sr. Operator Instructor position. I honestly love the idea of being in training, and from reading all the things i have read... it seems like a great place to work. With that said, it has been a while since this thread has had any action. Is the work environment still the same as it was before?

One thing I'm worried about is a location to live. I'd like to live outside of Burlington, maybe closer to Lawrence. There are restrictions, as if I accept the job I would not be able to live >60 minutes from the site. This would be based on being a part of the Emergency Response Team. Any ideas?

Secondly, I am still currently active duty. The position that was is a possibility starts early January, but I do not separate until March. I am looking into whether or not my command will allow me an early out to do it, but it is unlikely. An option is for me is to take 2.5 weeks of leave at a time to work a month. Do you think that the company would be willing to work with me in this regard? Just looking to see what anyone's opinion on this matter is. I'd hate to miss a great job opportunity, based on a couple of months.

Thanks!

Sam

Due to other circumstances I will not be able to make the outage this spring.  This does open up a couple rooms for rent in a house in Lyndon (to be shared with a couple of HP's).  See my post in housing for details.
