 I worked with a good crew doing a Engineering Backlog Reduction Project for the site.  Finding a place to stay was the worse part, unless you include the roof that leaked when in rained.  The food at the Willows was really outstanding.
 Overall it wasn’t a bad place to work, great orientation on their database system, probably the best of any I’ve ever had.
 By the way, do any of the folks that I worked with read this site?  Give me a shout and let me know your doing great.

Would anyone happen to recall the RadCon foreman Ed Schnell who I worked with at BVPS in the mid-70's?  This was during construction and prior to startup. Lost touch with him many years ago. Any info greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Slo,

Thanks for the info on Ed.  I think I'd even buy a used car from him if he hasn't changed.  I wrote HP procedures for him back before BV startup. Still remember drop testing SRDs (how far?) and lunches across the river on MSA who wanted BV to buy their air packs.  We also worked in a trailer with a then young engineer... Ray Ireland, I believe.  Was a good guy. I think their HP supervisor was a Jack Allingham(?) at that time. Not sure what happened to him.

Thanks again for the info and best regards,

Dave

Overall I had an ok experience there but a real STRONG union plant.  I got three days off without pay or diem when I walked down the hall and picked up a screw driver an electrician dropped.  His helper reported me and they didn't even bother listening to my side.

Hey guys, I'm looking to get into Beaver Valley on a permanent employment level, I'm getting out of the Navy and my wife's family is from just outside Pittsburgh, so we would like to be close to them. Any info as to what headhunter  I would need to talk to about employment up there. I need to contact them soon so I can start any qualifications I'll need to complete before leaving the Navy. Thanks in advance.  [smiley=yin-yang.gif] [smiley=wave.gif]

KingSmag...Beaver Valley, Perry, and Davis Besse are all part of a parent company FirstEnergy Corp.  Their ability to properly run and maintain nuclear power plants is being seriously questioned.  You may want to watch out what minefield you walk into.  Their people skills also leave a lot to be desired.

I recently completed an outage there. I went with an open mind but expecting the worse. I think they are trying to improve and I actually had a pretty good experience there. Most of the house people said the bad rep was warranted and they had earned it. However, I would go back and did meet a few good people there. I did not care for the area that much, or for the way they do some things, but overall they are much improved. The other first energy plants have been having major problems lately. Now Braidwood....you want to talk about SUCK!! never again my friend...never again. ;D

Rusty, I take it that the braidwood outage didn't go so well. That old comed mentallity still reigns. Beaver Valley has come along way since the early to mid nineties. House personnel are actually involved in the outage and overall they have a real good attitude. Their program has some real weak points and the paperwork is still cumbersome, although nothing like the old work package days. The unions are receptive to rp, and generally are knowledgable about rp practices. The recent outage was the best outage I've done to date and would return in a heartbeat. Email me bro with the braidwood details and that idaho gig we talked about

Later , Chris

Hey Rapid,
If you want to find just about anythig musical, Download Kazaa desktop utility (it's free) on your home pc and then enter whatever you want to find in the search engine under audio and it will probably find several copies of whatever you want. Then you just download the Mp3 on your pc (again...free). I found 3 different versions of "Please Come To Boston" a few days ago. Great roadie song.

there used to be a trailer/campsite on rt 18, about 15 minutes from site.  raccon state park has hookups, about 20 minutes from site, but i don't know how long you can stay without moving.  in the fall it could be long enuff to do the job.

Beaver Valley (where I grew up) has a lot of locals who speak Pittsburghese.  Find a translator to help you understand.  The language is a combination of Appalachian Hillbilly and Pennsylvanian.  No good asking the Site Coordinator.  He's a local too.

Here are a few examples:

Mahl = mile  There is no "s" on the plural form.  Example:  The speed limit on site is fy mahl 'n arr.  (five miles an hour)

Arr = hour

Still = steel - the area's biggest export.  Also the flavor of the local tapwater.

Ahya = Ohio - the river that runs past the plant and the state just a few miles to the east.

Ahrn = Iron - The element Fe, or the short name for Iron City Beer.  Both have the same flavor.  This is not to be confused with steel, which is an alloy of Iron, Chromium, Carbon, and other stuff processed in a furnace.  But the yellow tapwater can cause some confusion.  If there is a layer of foam on top, it's the tapwater.

Hoagie = A long sandwich known in other parts of the country as a sub, grinder, or roll wedge.

Mahntneer = Mountaineer - the name of a race track / casino complex in West Virginia a few miles from the plant.

ERF (rhymes with turf) = Emergency Response Facility.

ERFlings = People who work in the ERF

Fahr = fire

Dahn =down

Tahn = town

Dahntahn = downtown

Haahs = House

Maahs = Mouse

Haahsmaahs = Housemouse.

Fahrhaahs = firehouse

Yinz = a local pronunciation of the rural Tennesee contraction You'uns, which means "you ones" - ALWAYS used as the plural form of "You".

Worsh = wash

Aht = out

Aht Aht = Out for a date, dinner, party, or other social engagement - as opposed to going out to a store or for a walk.  Example: Are yinz goin aht aht, er just aht.

Buhruh = borough - a small division of the county with its own taxes, which will be deducted from your paycheck without exception, discussion, exemption or appeal.  If you work there, you'll pay for the priviledge.

There are other things you need to know as well if you want to be safe:

Have good brakes on your car.  Hills are steep and winding near the plant.

There are more deer per square mile in this area than most of the rest of the country.

It is frequently foggy near the plant due to the river and the five cooling towers.  (There is a huge fossil plant next door.)

Beware of the "Pittsburgh Left"!!  This practice can kill you if you don't know about it.
If you are stopped at a red light, and the car coming the opposite way is signalling a left turn (known locally as a lefhan turn), he wll go immediately when the light turns green.  Even though you have the right of way, it is common for people to allow the first car or two to go ahead so as to keep them from tying up traffic.  It has gotten to a point that they expect this.  So if you go as soon as the light turns, without allowing them to turn left, they may very well hit you or you will hit them.  Not everyone does this, but you have to be sure they are going to yield before you enter the intersection.

It wouldn't be the one in Fallstown would it? Didn't remember the name, it's in a regular house, can't even tell it's a bar. I used to go to Roberts Roadside, The Riverside Saloon, and used to be a few in Chippewa, byt they have all changed since I was last there! :-[

I am VERY surprised that no one has mentioned the Midway, or as it's locally known, the Skidway. that's probably the most frequented bar in the area.

I loved this post, as I am a southern girl who has a combination accent of North Florida/Alabama with 25 years of South Carolina thrown in. I have the hardest time getting people to understand me (above the Mason Dixon). It took me 5 minutes once to buy a bag of ICE. The girl couldn't understand me and finally when she asked what it was I calmly replied "its frozen water".

Beer Court, a combination of Appalachin Hillbilly and Pennsylvanian??  I prefer to call it "Urban Hillbilly"

Here's a link to translate and speak "Pittsburghese" for those not acquanited with the local dialect:

The BV Motel is also very clean and they are friendly.  They understand the concept of "night shift".  I actually went out on my night off to do laundry and the maid service was done when I got back an hour later.  35 minutes sounds like a haul, but it is really closer to 25 min in good weather.  Anything closer is too expensive or kinda scummy.

Hi I live near the Beaver Valley Nuclear Plant.  I will be recieving an Accociates Degree in Power Plant Operations and I have a BS in Engineering.  I would like some information on Starting pay rates (NLO) at Beaver Valley (benefits also ) .  Does anyone know any contacts?  Isthere a site to compare working a coal plant vs a nuclearplant??

Thank You,

This guy , thenuttyneutron, works for Firstenergy as an NLO at Davis Besse. My guess is Beaver Valley hires at the same rate.

IIRC the plants in that region were offering 25 an hour or so, topping out at around 30 to 32 an hour.

Usually there's no difference between the dirtburners and the nukes except the Nukes start at a higher pay grade and make it to the top grade quicker because they started closer to begin with. Some utilities stop the nukes one pay grade higher (maybe 50 cents an hour)

If you play your cards right at a dirtburner you can make a LOT more money because they run at minimum staffing and rely on OT. Nuke plants are legally limited in how many hours you can work.

An example. the most I could ever work as an NLO was 72 hours a week, with no more than 16 in any one day. My first 18 months as an NLO I also worked at a dirtburner in Ohio. On my 4 offs and weekends I'd work 16 hours a day at the dirtburner because my wife and I needed the money. 16 hours times 4 days times 1 and 1/2 was great money plus what I made at Edison. The work was easier but dirty as hell.

Thank You,

Paul

I just got hired into the last NLO class as BVPS.  Starting pay is about 25/hr.  Benefits are standard - health,dental,vision, 401k (matching), etc.  Not sure when they will be hiring a new NLO class in though.  Bruce Mansfield is the 3 unit coal plant nextdoor. They are hiring operators right now.  Check out Firstenergycorp.com.  Good luck

All you missed was "icy lite".  As you will soon learn, it is I.C. Lite, the lower calorie version of Iron City Beer.  If you get the chance, try one.  You'll find out what beer tastes like when it's made without stuff like malts or hops.

I'm hearing stories and the outage doesn't officially start until tomorrow..........not good.

Heard a joke..................How many Beaver House Techs does it take to watch the S/G cameras up on the hill?  ALL OF THEM -  PLUS AS MANY BARTLETT TECHS AS THEY WANT.

How fair is that to the rest of the Techs at the other control points?  I guess Beaver has not changed after all.......................... ..............

the usually locals are here and some returnees from out of town.  having problems here.  crane is not able to pick the cvan boxes loaded.  in return have to take the boxes to decon facitlity to 1/2 unload so it could pick them up.  was suppose to bring in a big crane from bruce mansfield plant but after arriving it was not inspected.  so we are back to square one.  therefore the scaffold material etc. is not being brought in quick enough to build scaffold.  day two of outage and no scaffold built yet.  oh well tomorrow is another day.

At Beaver Valley the reason Steam Generators has so many Techs. is because Steam Generators is funded as a "project".  The cost of the Techs. comes out of the project budget, not the general outage budget.  If the project has a good budget and the project manager has alot of clout, the project will be well staffed.

I had heard that............interesting.

So how did that work for the Techs ........ when they found out they were to be laid off as soon as S/G were finished.............what was that date - October 7th?

So many other areas short handed I would have thought they would have moved them around to help the entire outage ...................... hmmmm ::)

I guess at Beaver you shouldn't volunteer for the S/G's....or line up another outage as soon as you're assigned to S/G's....

The RP Techs on Steam Generators were not laid off when the Generators were done.  They surveyed the equipment being packed up and got it out the hatch.  A hand full of Techs left early because they had another outage to go to.  The rest were moved to other areas.

As for how the outage going.  It's gone.  Currently Mode 2 with nothing in the way of syncing to the grid.

PLEASE BE ADVISED SHIPPINGPORT BRIDGE WORK WILL BE IN PROGRESS DURING THE OUTAGE.

What that means is you are much better off staying towards the Airport and using Green Garden Road or The "World Famous Midway" exit.  Staying above or using Rt 68 is bad becasue there will only be one lane open over the bridge.

I will post anymore updates as I hear them..

And I can confirm that basement of both cans is 692

Officcal start date of construction on Shippingport Bridge is 03/09/09...and its going to be for abaht 1 yer

Here is the latest on the shippingport bridge:

PennDOT has started the Shippingport Bridge project.  The project currently has a schedule through 12/31/2011.  It is expected there will be some single lane closures using flagman during the daylight hours.  They will minimize any closures before 08:00 and after 17:00 to allow easy access in and out of the plant during high traffic periods.  They intend to have alternating one lane closure during the daylight hours ( after 08:00 and before 17:00 ) which would limit congestion during our "high volume" vehicle periods.  However, they also plan to begin permanent one lane closures beginning on Wednesday March 18th through April 17th.  They will alternate traffic in a single lane 24/7 with traffic lights.  PennDOT will not have single lane operations from 05:00 to 08:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00 during the outage period beginning April 18th through May 10th.

The above information is from a Beaver Valley employee newsletter.

UPdate for those of you working over teh summer and possibly coming back for the fall Unit 2 outage:

To all,

The Shippingport Bridge Project continues to proceed as scheduled and the next phase of the project involves the removal and replacement of the three-span portion of the bridge over FENOC's walkway as we enter the plant. Jersey barriers have been placed under the bridge and a covered walkway will start to be erected beginning Monday (6/1/09) as PennDOT workers begin to work above our entrance area. The construction of the protective walkway is an approved OSHA design which will have interior lighting for our safety. The walkway will protect us from any potential falling debris during construction. PennDOT will have flagmen posted in the area  during the construction of the protective walkway to control traffic when required. The longest pedestrian traffic closing is expected to be no more that 5 minutes.  As always, safety is our most important concern for everyone. So please look twice when entering the area and obey any safety rules when entering or leaving the area.

Hi Folks,

I am an instructor at the Navy prototype and will soon be leaving, hopefully, to head back home to PA.  Can anyone provide contact info for First Energy or the Beaver Valley Plant as it is close to where I'd like to be moving to?

Any other random info/advice/tips on this plant or company would be appreciated as well.

thanks in advance!

Shippingport Bridge Update: 9/24/09

The work on the Shippingport bridge continues in a very safe and productive manner. As our outage approaches, we can expect some changes to the current arrangement with Swank Construction and their schedule.

Swank Construction will be completing work on the three-span portion of the bridge by 10/9/09. This portion of the bridge spans over our entrance way into the plant. Swank will be moving their efforts northward towards the main bridge span on 10/9/09.  The main span is considered the portion which spans over the river. Painting will begin under our section  of the bridge on 9/28/09 and likewise finish on 10/9/09. The painters will be operating in an enclosed area under the bridge.

Swank will continue to work on the bridge with single lane operation during the outage with some additional arrangements. They include:

·Flagging of Traffic During Peak Hours - Swank will provide a certified flagman equipped with a cellular phone to manually operate the traffic lights during peak hours, Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  Manually operating the traffic lights during the above mentioned days and times will ensure that no delays are experienced by FENCO employees, arriving to or departing from our facility.

·Emergency Services Access During Peak Hours - Swank’s Flagmen will be equipped with a cell phone for emergency communication with FENOC   to ensure that emergency service vehicles have unimpeded travel through the work zone.  Prior to any flagging operations we will provide FENCO with contact information. In the event of emergency FENOC will contact the emergency phone and instruct our flagmen on the direction of travel by the emergency vehicles, to ensure constant flow of traffic in the appropriate direction.

·Coordination/Communication with Borough Flagmen - An open line of communication will be available between Swank's Flagmen and the Borough Flagmen via 2-way radios to provide proper traffic flow in and out of the plant during peak hours.

Thanks, folks. Guess I'll have to go to Midland for lunch and ask around. BTW - according to the NRC, FENOC has selected a contractor* for their Fukushima FLEX mods. Since I've done FLEX prep work for another plant, I figured this may be something I could get involved with.

But, I've yet to find out who got that contract. Google has failed me thus far.

*Milestone Accomplishments
The following milestone(s) have been completed since the submittal of the OIP (Reference 1). This update
is current as of July 19, 2013. Completed review of the FLEX strategies following the submittal. FLEX strategies are unchanged, and a vendor has been selected to perform the detailed design engineering for the plant modification. Source: http://pbadupws.nrc.gov/docs/ML1323/ML13238A260.pdf

If you're at BV for the coming U2 outage, and have control room access, swing by and say HI to the daylight unit supervisor. :)

Thought that the Beaver Trap deserved this as well as DB and Perry.

deserves got nothing to do with it,...

there is no "right" to electricity,...

electricity is a government subsidized, regulated, enabled, hindered, promoted, demoted, aborted commodity delivered by private, public-private and fully public sources,....

power companies are not nuclear power companies, they are power companies with nuclear assets,...

things change,...

government changes,....

buggy whip makers either adapt, specialize, or die off,...

I recommend folks get good (or at least passable) at DnD,...

GLW,
I'm afraid my post was misunderstood, and re-reading it following your post made me understand why.
I did not mean to infer that the plants and/nor the utility deserved the termination of operations. My intention was to post the utilitydive.com article with the Beaver Valley thread as had been done with the  Davis Besse and Perry threads inasmuch as it is a significant part of the FENOC family, and as such I thought it deserved the same acknowledgement and forthcoming commentary.
My apology for creation of confusion and stimulation of sensitivities.
