RO-7 Batteries

Can anyone tell me about changing the 30V batteries in an RO-7?  Can Joe-Blow handle it?  Or do we need to get an Instrument Tech to take care of it?

And how long do they last with low-to-moderate use?  (I can't remember ever having to get them changed out on a job site, but also have never used an RO-7 for more than a couple months at a stretch, so...)

If you posess more than a smidge of mechanical ability and are not bound by union jurisdiction, changing the batteries is not difficult. As to how long they last, that can be improved if you disconnect the probe from the instrument while not in use. Something about detector voltage always applied .........

Thanks for the info about disconnecting the probe.  I will make sure they implement that policy.

As far as ‘mechanical ability’ goes, I need to have a plan that will let all the users perform every function without hurting the R0-7...or themselves.  I read the tech manual and it had the blurb about “produces >60V, so electric shock is a possibility”, so thought I’d ask around. 

I also have never had the cover off one of these things…are there any caps I have to worry about discharging?   

And, yes, there are union issues, so I can’t just tear the thing down and try to answer some of my own questions.  May have to drag it over to the cal-lab and see if they will let me watch while they change batteries.
