I see that Numanco is trying to fill the Farley outage.  I hope that they manage to fill it.  It seems sort of late to still be advertising for positions to be filled 3-24.

Why do they need HPs at Farley, they don't have a health physics program. Sure enough you can come off some more cash but it don't make up for treating people like crap. Yes once is enough for me. It's just another one of those plants that shows up only once on your resume.

Been there.
Didn't stay long.
Dry county.
Had to go to Florida for the good stuff.
Overall.....not on my top 10 list but bearable in a pinch.

4 HP's gone.  One of them exempt level.  Other 3 were techs.  layoffs in all groups.  Still to come will be the union covered jobs.  About the same number to be cut from shops.  Fun times

I spent a week there in'90.  The locals did not like this long hair
from the north to say the least.  Couldn't find a place to live, couldn't get served
in resturants.  Luckily, Bartlett called with a better offer elsewhere and I bid farewell to PSESI, Dothan, and Farley.

If you go to Farley, go to take the money. The house people there are the extreme religious right. They will stick a knife in your back with a smile because God is on their side. Many people wear blatantley bias religious tshirts. Do not make fun of them or you will be gone. They have many local people getting diem, lying about their address. The site people let this happen. Dthan is a cool place, however. It is trying to become a modern city without the bigots. If you can go there for only the cash, you will do ok.

If you get a chance to go to Panama City... down on Thomas Drive is J Michaels.  It is on the waterfront at the marina before the Treasure Ship.  Go try the Shrimp J Michaels with a cold brew... yummy

I wouldn't say Farley is a great site, but as a Jr the pay isn't to bad.  No where near as low as working in the Duke System.  Only problem I have is that all I do is sit control point and count air samples, but alot of sites are doing that now.

fueldryer,  come on down.  Looking forward to having you here

I hope you enjoy the outage at Farley. Lots of southerners here-- we are in lower Alabama after all.   I suspect that you will find some people that you like and maybe even one or two that you don't .  In that respect I bet we are like every other plant in the country.

Within a couple of hours is the beach.  It makes a nice off day get a way.

Hopefully after the outage you can give a good recomendation teh next time someone asks.

..$$ is the only reason to go to an outage...Let it ride....why else would you leave home, work 12 hours with people you dont know, and dont care about;...I was a house tech at Farley in the 80's, I am sure it has changed many times, the house techs at Farley are by far the most intelligent bunch I have ever worked with, most are ex-navy, or degreed, some are ex- RAT's that were working this business when you were still eating with a spoon, I know Rick Gordie was there when they pulled the rods on the sun, they are all trained in all aspects of Radiation Protection...you seem to forget you are in the Bible belt, explain what you mean about getting fired for talking about a shirt, with a Christian logo..I suspect there was more to it than that..most of you seem to be biased, or prejudiced about the south, and southern plants...stay the heck out then..I read a bumper sticker a long time ago...it said..."WEDONTCAREHOWYOUDOITUPNORTH"..AND WE STILL DONT....so dont whine about the money, the southern drawl, the Christians, the house techs...they didnt twist your arm and make you go there.....and you know what else, they could care less if you come back....I always heard if you cant say something nice, dont say anything at all..and thats all I have to say..what about it Spanky?...Red

What's all the bad vibe about Long Island. I'm from Conneticut but have been on the sand bar for several years and it's beautiful. They can keep the taxes though. Just like the weather each place has it's bad points, hurricanes, tornados etc.I've been to several southern plants and lived in Fla. for several years,no prblems no complaints. I did my job, got paid, went home.I was never there to make policy only to abide by their procedures and make MONEY.By the way Ipswwich clams are the best and Ipswich is in Massacussettes.

its just florida politics thats all- carpet baggers moving south and makin everyone mow their lawns and dump nitrates in the drinking water because thats the way its done on the island...  its the ole BORG thing- resistance is futile-  Florida used to be fun- now its a clone of new england.. the only thing they havent screwed up is the GULF sea food- wayyyyyyyyyyyy better than new england any time.

Waiting on Mode 4 here at Farley. Layoffs have started. Wasn't a bad outage, the house people are some of the best. Met the man that pulled the rods on the sun! I'd definetly come back. My last day is Thursday and then I'm Panama City beach bound for 4 days of fun in the sun before heading north!!! Thanks to all at Farley for a good outage.

New to the boards, great site with lots of info. Starting the pipefitting career soon so I got a few questions; Anyone working at Farley from the Local 52? How is the work down there? What type of work is it? Need any info yall can give me, not real sure what to expect or do when I get down there. Thanks.

Good Day ladies and gents!

I am a complete newbie to the board.  I studied and traied to work on computers so that my job could be sent to India and Mexico...  Recently I started looking around and someone who knew I had been a Machinist Mate on subs told me to check out Southern Nuclear.  Short story long, I am taking the POSS/MASS next week at Farley.  I would really enjoy meeting anyone down there and talking about working at the plant.  I have more questions than this board could hold.

Thanks,
McBride

Thanks,

I guess I should specify I was an A-Ganger...non-Nuke MM on the boat.

I read that the POSS/MASS is about as difficult as ASVAB, and I retook that last year, considering re-upping at the time.  I blew it out of the water, so if POSS/MASS is in the same league, I should be fine.

I would ask some questions here, but I don't even know enough to know what to ask.  :D

There is alot of info on and guides on the MASS/POSS on the web I can post you some links to the ones I used if you need them.  The funny thing about that test is if they want you to pass it you will.

Although not entirely on topic, here is a link to a thread that should help you with the POSS/MASS exam. Good Luck ;)

The POSS is more difficult than the ASVAB as you have about 1/6th the time to complete it.

I read that the POSS/MASS is about as difficult as ASVAB

If I gave you that impression, I am sorry. It covers the same material, so ASVAB study guides work well. But as BZ stated, the time is the challenge.

Well, I THINK I did okay, although on one of the graphing charts I think I sprained my eyeballs!

The best part was when I was on the way home, and my head gasket blew.  Yeahhhh...  My car is at in Ozark, AL.  LOL!  If anybody down there needs a decent auto guy, I think his name was Steve Henderson, I think his shop is Ace Auto or something like that.  So, that is my contribution to the Farley board.  I thought putting his number up here would be too close to spam, but he seems like a good guy and his price was lower than other shops I called in the area.

There is a gas station with white oil towers next to it.  Name starts with a 'C' but I can't remember the name.  Anyway, I asked 1 worker if they were on the north or south side of town so I could tell the tow truck.  "Are you coming from the north or south?" was the answer.  I explained that I was not trying to figure out what side of 231 they were on, but whether they were north of Ozark, or south of it.  "I asked you if you were going north or south!"  So I said I was going south, "Then we're north of town."  I said, what if I was traveling north from Dothan..."Oh! Then we'd be south of town."

So, I asked another employee who asked me, "Are you going north or south?"

...I walked down 231 to get a mile marker...

In hopes that I may get to move down there, let me ask a few questions.

Where do I look for a house?  Are there any areas to stay away from?  I am most interested in good schools.  I have a 4th grader and a 2 year old.  I would sacrifice housing over good school any day.  But I have been told that housing down there is cheaper than Birmingham.  I checked Realtor.com and there are some decent looking houses in my price range, but I don't know Houston from Rehaboth or whtever...

School.  Are they good, decent? Which ones?

Social life.  What is there for my city-girl of a wife to do? Fishing and peanuts work for me, but she wants shopping, dining out and stuff...go figure!   Are there parks, etc for the kids?

What is training like there for newbies?  Is there any kind of mentoring program?  If not, just tell the older guys not to stop too suddenly . . .  :P

Lastly, if I do this thing, I'm doing it all the way.  What avenues are open for education for newbie nukes down there?  What kind of educational bennies does Southern offer?  Although I have a BA, it is nothing engineering or nuke related.

Thanks,
McBride

Dothan is a beautiful town, I just got back from a week long trip visiting my son and his future bride and am heading back on Friday. I will ask them to contact you as they live there full time and Julie grew up in Enterprise.

Land can be steep but there are very reasonable housing options, the outskirts of the Garden District is beautiful with the homes being a little older.

Social life: well there's a decent mall, several strip malls and businesses galore; TARGET, WALMART, JC PENNYS, OLD NAVY, LIMITED, BELKS, DILLARDS, LANE BRYANT, THE AVENUE, BED, BATH AND BEYOND, BATH AND BODY WORKS, GYMBOREE, A CHILDRENS PLACE, ETC And your only a couple hours from Destin, FL and the outlet malls and a beautiful beach and vacation spot.

There are tons of parks, a botanical garden, coffee houses (The River Nile is wonderful) and even a small water park.

Some of my favorite places to eat so far are The River Nile (try the homemade soups) and The Blue Plate (Country Fried Steak). I have yet to try these others but was told they are wonderful: Conestooga Steak House, Old Mill Restaraunt, Zacks and Dobbs BBQ (have not eaten there in  30+ years, but its still open and still crowded so it can't be half bad!).

As far as education, I will assume that you are asking about colleges, if not sorry. The colleges nearby include Wallace Community College and Troy.

Hey all,

I applied for an Ops job thru the southern company web site, and was wondering if anyone knows when they maybe hiring at Farley.  From what Ive read it doesnt seem like a bad place to work, but Im hearing budget concerns to much.  Can anyone let me know bout this.  Im tryin to get on with a southern plant in ops (took test for Votgle and still waiting on interview).  I live in Augusta GA so that isnt to far to Farley just looking for info.

I heard it is a horrible place to work, and everyone is mean, and they are bad and hate kids and puppies, uh...they persecute kittens and , and uh, and uh, uh, uh ...

Okay, so I applied for the same position...  :D

From what I heard, they are not even interviewing yet.  They hope to start at the end of January.  When I took the POSS/MASS in October and they said they hoped to complete the hiring process by early December.

Did I say ho much everybody hates it there, and they are forced to eat ONLY bread and water!  They beat their workers with sticks!  NO! I MEAN IT!  :o

I hope you get the position though.  I of course wouldnt mind getting picked as well, but at 5 hours away the whole prospect of relocation comes into play.......so the family will have to do some serious praying before we commit.

But on a more serious note, do they really?

Actually, I have communicated with a few folks and I have heard nothing but positives.  The company seems to treat people well, the area around Dothan is nice.  The pay and benefits are pretty good.

They have a System Operator in Training position that I am extremely interested in, and a Nuclear Tech position that would probably be a good foot-in-the-door.  I am convinced that the nuclear field is the future of energy, and that energy is the future of America.  At 40 (for 3 more weeks anyway...) I want to go somewhere that I can learn and grow and eventually be the crusty old fart that knows the plant inside and out.

You know the guy whose name and number you have somewhere on a yellow sticky note?  I want my name and number on that yellow stick note.

And besides, I like peanuts and fishing...

Good, because I'll be down there Firday to interview.  They called me today about the SOIC position.  I was at Ober Gatlinburg at the time.  Never really ecpected to get cell signal there . . . but GLAD I DID!  ;D

I'm looking forward to seeing the plant.  The POSS/MASS was given at an AL Power site; not the actual plant.

Hey Farley folks, I found out that Alabama offers a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in Dothan.  You can get details at: http://www.academicoutreach.ua.edu/page.cfm?page=degreeWeb&wpid=9&wmid=45&wcid=64 .

This is distance learning for the Dothan area only.

Anyone know what the "Plant Technician" job posting for Farley entails beyond the info on the Southern Co. website. Would this be a go in, for someone looking to land and NLO position at Farley, or does the position prelude at different path. Just wondering the posting left me a bit confused as to what the position entailed. Hoping someone at Farley can chime in with some advice. TIA.

"Plant Technician" is an entry level position. You would start of as a laborer/deconner.  Generally within a year or so you would move to either operations or maintenance as jobs come open.  If you want to get a NLO operator slot this is the way to get in.

My husband submitted his resume about a month ago for the Farley site.  I am really hoping he can get on there since I own a house in Dothan (rental property the last 6 years).  He is getting out of the Navy (MM2) at the six year point.  For now, I am just keeping my fingers crossed.

Does anyone have any insight to the hiring schedule at Farley?  He starts terminal leave in August and so far we have not seen any jobs being posted...we are looking elsewhere (as much as that breaks my heart to say).  This getting out of the Navy stuff sure is hard-even with the BSASNT from TESC.

No I havent.  Comin from Augusta, GA so it will be a little drive for me, but worth it.  Ive read the posts and seems like a nice town.  LOL Im drivin for about 6 hours to have a 20 minute interview then drivin 6 hours to go home.  I pray I get the job, ive been trying to get into the commercial field now for about 2 years so hopefully this is it.  Im kinda suprised the interview is only taking 20 minutes, they must be asking very general questions.

The interview format is general a committee asking a prescribed set of questions.    Sometimes the simple things can make the difference.  Make good eye contact, speaking articulately, etc.  Be sure and highlight any relevent nuclear experience.  Its a short interview so impressions count.

Good luck.

Appreciate that advise.  Yah I am going to try to use a great line I have saved that one of the guys posted on the forums that was awsome in an interview.  Im hopin my Nuclear Pharm Tech, HP, NDA, and chemical operations will all be a very good positive and help to land a job.  If offered next step is to find lodging.

Ok just interviewed today so we are in the holding pattern.  Man, I didnt think I would be nerveous, but I walked out of there thinking Im such an idiot.  Simple questions you are to give straight forward answers to, and I felt like I rambled or just screwed up completely.  AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!  Oh well its in Gods hands now.  50 people interview for 10 slots, hope im in one of them.

If it is more than 3 weeks don't get too worried.  Sometimes HR works at their own pace.  keep in mind that Holidays are basically already here and some (all?)  of the decision makers on vacation.

I just interviewed last Wednesday. I left with the same feeling Bprogressive.

Didn't know they were interviewing 50 for 5 spots. Are those ballpark numbers? One of the guys I talked to works for a contractor at Farley. He said he thought the last two groups hired in were around 8-10 people if I remember correctly.

Good luck, and hopefully, we'll both get a phone call.

Hey rockchalk99 welcome to nukeworker :).  Yah the lady that welcomed us said it was 10 slots open and they were interviewing 50 folks.  Yah I just saw as well they are advertising for SOIT so I might as well apply for that one as well.

Good luck to you too my friend and maybe we can shake hands as we meet in class or at the gate.

I thought the five new hires was Farley, but that was for another position at another plant.

Do you have an idea what the SOIT job function is. Sounds like  NLO level position, but I did notice that the position will spend the first year on the job in the classroom. Not sure what that means. I was kind of hoping to get a foot in the door with the Nuclear Technician position, and then move over to operations, so I'm a little confused.
When I saw the SOIT job postings for the sites with the new reactors under construction I just figured it was to train operators for the new equipment. Any ideas what the SOIT is all about?

SOIT is shift operator in training.  It is operations.  Its a paygrade,  you get a raise when you get qualified as a NLO.  Nuclear technicians are an entry level job that feeds ops and maintenance.

Thanks Grantime.

So, the SOIT is a step ahead of the Nuclear Tech, and if a Nuclear Tech was to move into operations, they would be at the SOIT paygrade until they became qualified for the NLO paygrade?

I believe Bprogressive and I are in the same boat, we've both passed the POSS and MASS tests that were administered by Southern Co..

I have a good bit of heavy/commercial construction experience (pipefitting, electrical, steel fabrication/erection, ect, ect), I'm just about to finish a B.S. degree this summer, and I have one class this semester for my A.S. in Nuclear Power Technology at Bismarck State.

Granted, I don't have any commercial or navy nuke experience, but I'm confident that I have a solid core of related mechanical experience, work ethic, and drive to be successful when I finally get the call.

The position, as I understand it, wasn't for ops or maintenance, but was an entry level position that could lead to those opportunities in the future. As someone without navy nuke experience, that would much rather be on the operations side than in a traditional engineering role, I thought this job would be an ideal way to get my foot in the door to work my way into an NLO opportunity.

Hydro,  2 years ago I took the POSS/MASS and passed, this time around I just took the POSS and I passed so I am at a loss as to why Im not getting in.  Ive got NDA/NDE, HP, nuke pharm tech, and chemical operations under my belt so why not getting chosen is a mystery to me.  I even have a really good (Im talkin really good connections) still nothin.

Hi all,
My name is David Bell, I'm an EMC in the Navy retiring in November 10.  I have all the standard attributes you'd expect from a 20 yr Chief in the Navy along with my BSAST from Thomas Edison.  I was born and raised in Dothan, and would really like to go back.  I have 2 teenagers there at Northview High.
My questions are:
1.  I have applied on the Southern website for 2 separate jobs, over 2 weeks ago, and so far nothing except the standard "thank you for applying" email.  One still says "under review".  What should I expect for a time frame after I apply before I should move on to something else?  Am I applying too early?
2.  What does a shift supervisor in training do?  Approximate pay?
3.  How would that compare to an instructor?
4.  I'm going out to sea shortly for a couple of weeks, if they reply, how long do they generally give before I'm out of the pool, and if I'm out of the pool for that one, does it mean I'm done with Farley?
5.  Any other useful information for my job hunting would also be appreciated.
Thank you very much for any help,
David

HR is always slower than you think it ought to be.  They have hired enough navy folks to understand sea duty so I wouldn't worry about that.

Good luck.

Hope to see you at Farley soon

The standards we expect out of a 20 year Navy Vet are quite low. Your highest standards are power than ours. Your qualifiactions are roughly those of a janitor,

1: Expect a month.
2 and 3: Depends. The salary varies by utility, If Shift Supervisor i training means Instant SRO you can expect quite a bit higher salary than as an instructor
4: If you're at sea you're out of luck, also if not within 90 days of your EAOS you're most likely out of luck HOWEVER this does not preclude you from being considered if you apply for a position in the future.

5: Advice, drop statements like I have the standards you'd expect from a Navy Chief with 20 years and a Thomas Edison Degree. No one cares. Neither is applicable.

Mike, you spelled qualifications wrong (typo/whatever).  I wouldn't normally point it out, but you seem to think its important.

If that guy is equal to a janitor, then I should just stay outside the gate.  Maybe even cry myself to sleep.

I just did a phone interview with these guys for a Shift Support Supervisor in Training on Wednesday in which I said I'd also consider a Systems Operator position if one were available, and on Friday I had a job offer for the Systems Operator position. It seems a bit odd, since they're willing to take me on sight unseen, but I'm not complaining. So what can anyone tell me about Farley, Dothan, and the job in general? I know relatively nothing about the area, but I'm coming down for in-processing this week and my start date is May 10th. I'm currently a Plant Operator at Nine Mile Point.

Event Text
UNIT 1 AUTOMATIC REACTOR TRIP DUE TO THE LOSS OF A START-UP TRANSFORMER

"This is a report of an automatic RPS actuation and automatic ESF actuation per 10CFR50.72(b)(2)(iv)(B) and 10CFR50.72(b)(3)(iv)(A). Additionally, this is to report intentions for a press release per 10CFR50.72(b)(2)(xi).

"At 2105 CDT on 6/11/13, Farley Unit 1 experienced an automatic reactor trip from 100% power. The initiating event was the loss of the 1B Start up Transformer which resulted in de-energization of the B-Train ESF 4KV buses and the 1B and 1C Reactor Coolant Pump Buses. The 1B Emergency Diesel Generator auto started and tied to the B-Train 4KV Emergency buses.

"Both MDAFW (Motor Driven Auxiliary Feedwater) Pumps and the TDAFW (Turbine Driven Auxiliary Feedwater) Pump auto-started and are supplying AFW flow to the steam generators. Decay heat removal is via the steam dumps to the main condenser.

"The cause of the loss of the 1B Start-up Transformer is unknown and is currently under investigation. All other systems functioned as expected in response to the loss of the 1B Start-up Transformer and reactor trip.

"The NRC Senior Resident Inspector has been notified.

"A press release is planned."

All control rods fully inserted. There is no impact on Unit 2. Currently the licensee does not plan to restart the 1B and 1C Reactor Coolant Pumps. Pressurizer spray has been isolated from the 1B loop per procedure. Main Condenser vacuum is adequate for decay heat removal.

Buddy, you might want to verify if the event text is public information.  On my OE report at work, it notes that the event text/description is not for public distribution (everything you posted below "Event Text").

It also says in the above text, "A press release is planned" which I think signifies that the company is in the process of making public the info they want to be public.

Fair enough.  I was just exercising my questioning attitude; apparently I am contiuously learning.  Thanks everyone making this a respectful environment and maintaining it such that people feel free to raise concerns.

I would expect nothing less from a nuclear industry forum.  ;)

If you see stuff posted in that format it is already on the NRC Website.
