Oak Ridge is definately an interesting place, lots of things you dont get to see on the Nuclear Power circuit. It's kinda like lots of small operations all tucked away in the woods (and at 3 different plants) and there are all kinds of HP's running around. A good place to work and not worry about being layed off (generally), a nice little place.

The only draw back to Oak Ridge, well lets just say sometimes they get so strapped for warm bodies to fill slots that if you can read a book and pass the Core Test - now your qualified to do everything the 20 year road tech can. And because there is such a gap in experience sometimes, the unexperienced are paired with the experienced.......kinda a CYA thing that most companies do.

But don't get me wrong, most road techs are gods around here in DOE land. Sure we dont know everything about all the other isotopes, but we make up for any technical lapse by knowing good, practical job coverage techniques.

Somethings have to be learned the hard way, somethings that alot of the "Home Grown" talent lack. But hell, they love ya if you can keep them out of trouble, just dont laugh too hard when the real work starts and they have to stand on their own, I laugh all the way to the bank, every 2 weeks. ::)

One of the best DOE sites, new ventures, new facilities, visited last year.  A lot of DOE facilities are closing or restructuring, material leaving, that means contract RCT's leaving, not Oak Ridge, TN.  Cost of living is very reasonable an additional plus.  Mountain terrain with plenty of green vistas, Knoxville is the closest large city.  Navy and NRRPT qualifications are desired but don't expect more money at DOE sites.  Broad range of radiological activities "L" and "Q" DOE clearances required for some.

Any place that has as many places to eat as Oak Ridge has can't be all bad, it's a pretty good place, been here 8 yrs now.

Did someone say eating places in Oak Ridge, TN !!

I love Calhoun's on the river, just sent some of my biker friends by there during a recent trip.  Needless to say, they raved about the food and the location, prices were nice too.  Calhoun's has three locations but "on the river" is my favorite, excellent lunch buffet so you can try many different foods.

Hey Mike,
Many people don't know that K-25 site is within ETTP. Maybe you can put K-25/ETTP or ETTP/K-25 that way people who are not familar with Oak Ridge or ETTP will be able to ask questions, or comment on K-25.  Just a suggestion.  Thanks, LD5030 :)

Anyone information on ETTP/K-25 site would be greatly appreciated.  Are the supervisors good to work for?  Is it "typical" RCT stuff?  Thanks.

Still interested in any info about K25.  What is the nature of the RCT jobs there?  Is it research/development, radwaste, etc.....  Are the supervisors good to work for?

K-25 used to be used in Enriching Uranium.  It is in D&D.  A RCT would most likely need to perform job coverage in highly enriched Uranium environment, as well as other hazards do to the mothballed state, i.e. guano, mold, etc.

I was/am working on the K-33 side of it, at least for a few more days.

I don't know anything about the K-25 side of the fence.

Anyone have information on K-25/ETTP in Oak Ridge?  Is it a place you would recommend to work?  I seem to be having a hard time getting any info about what it is like to work there and Kelly can't tell me much.

I don't work there but my husband works there as a forman.  He says they are still working out the bugs and a little confused at this point.  They haven't done much as far as work at this point but are trying to get started.  As far as working there, he says its fine just aggrivating to get started on something and then made to stop because they forgot to cover something in the work package or put you on something else.  It'll take awhile to work the quirks out.  As far as the supervisors its the usual complaints from what I hear.  Anyway, maybe this helped you a little.  Have a great day!

What is the specific nature of an RCT's job at ETTP/K-25?

I work at the X-10/ORNL site, Melton Valley to be exact. A lot going on here. I have noticed that Kelly is now advertising 32+ hours OT!!. Many of us here do not like the long hours and it is only going to get worse. The work is the easiest work I have ever done. All we are doing is moving dirt. They say the work will last 5-8 years and I can believe it. Every time we dig a site we find more hot dirt. A lot of stories that folks at commercial sites would not understand. Merlin, don't be upset with Kelly, they simply do not know the details about what we do. They just supply RCT and the sites get them accoding to need. You could end up at K-25 or X-10 or???? There is no way of knowing where you will be. I can tell everyone that there is a lot of oppertunities, once you are here. Great place to build senior time.

Who is running the Shonka show now?
I know D.D. is with Millenium. I ran into him a couple times in Knoxville.
Are we still running SCM's over there?

Post by: Shonkatoys on Jul 26, 2005, 11:34
We are still running SCM's at the BNFL project. Shonka and Millenium are teaming on this project. Shonka has opened a office in Oak Ridge near the Y12 Credit Union on Illinois.  It is in the Pine Ridge Office Complex about 1/4 mile on the right past Y12 Credit Union. You can check out some 21st century HP on Nukeworker pictures at,  http://www.nukeworker.com/pictures/thumbnails410.html

Does anyone know of any projects similar in nature that will be coming up?  (Surveying, surveying and then going back to survey some more)
Title: Re: Oak Ridge
Post by: Dave Warren on Jul 27, 2005, 09:14
I would assume this:

When the big fiscal budget opens itself to all the eaglets looking for a worm, the K-25 project would begin bringing technicians in.
That would include: Decon, Survey, Junior RCT, Senior RCT, Lead RCT, RCT Supervisor, and on up the line.

Remember, this is just one man's opinion. Nevertheless, I will post more here when the rumor mill begins to churn. The latest rumor was they wanted to staff up for K-25 "big-time", around Mid-August or Early-September.

This is probably your best time to send resumes to all the different companies.

Kelly and SEC for K-25. That might work for some of the other projects as well. Just in case you might want to check out Duratek and Bechtel. Good luck, east Tenn is a great place to be isn't it Dave.... Mike

You hit it on the head.
This is a great place to work.
We may not have all the big hourly wages and the astronomic per diem, but its a weekly paycheck and its in the bank on Wednesday.

Personally, I love working/living in this area.  Afterall, I have lived here for the biggest part of my life.  I love working at Oak Ridge.  It's just that no one seems to know how long things will last.  It's impossible to plan any upcoming work when you don't know when you will be released from your current job. I don't want to walk out on my company ruining any future opportunities, but I don't want to pass up any opportunities either.  I guess the longer you are in the biz, the more accustomed to this lifestyle you become.

Sounds like K-33 is gonna be tore down.  K-31 may become industrial.  Word is that most of the surveys will have to be re-done due to poorly developed DQOs.

Lay Offs mostly,  They were planning on getting this done by 2008 with 1200 people, But decided to go slower with 600 people because of an accident and be done by 2009.

I see where a couple of companies are hiring new techs. Does this mean some money has been turned loose and work is ramping up again?

If you have a clearance, there are plenty of opportunities.
Wouldn't most people who already have a clearance be working somewhere?
Where do the people come from to take these jobs when they are hiring only cleared people?
Is there something I am missing here?
Or, do they just switch companies when the highest bidder posts a job?

I don't think $27/hr will out bid too many "L" cleared techs.
I understand what you are saying... wouldn't it be economical for the DOE to allow clearances to stay active for like a year after you leave with just a quick update on your background check?  Oh what am I thinking... it's the government!

Dave, this may be off topic of k-25 but in response to your statement about clearances. i too wonder how theses positions are filled requiring an L or Q. i held a L at rocky flats and oak ridge(ETTP). i missed out on several opportunities because my clearance was inactive. i just wish there was a way to keep it for alittle longer after employment or a program to obtain it on your own. because it looks as though the trend is leaning towards you having have a clearance just to get considered for a position.
Title: Re: Oak Ridge K-25 (ETTP)
Post by: Dave Warren on Apr 30, 2007, 01:50
I would assume that if you took a poll of cleared RCT's, 90% of them are working.
The only way a company would get that cleared RCT to work for them would be by offering them a little extra hourly, diem, and incentive bennies.
Then, that RCT would take the company with more money. This business isn't any different now than it was in the 80's, when you are talking about taking the higher bidder for your services.
If the DOE would set up a program where you could pay a reasonable price to get and keep your clearance, they could recoup some of their losses when they do the investigations, and the "cleared RCT" population would rise significantly.

I don't ever see it happening, but it sounds good.

Sorry,

The company you work for requests the clearance, the day you leave, is the day they shut it down!!  Obviously any company who is requesting Actively Cleared Personel, wants to steal them from another company!  If they need them, they'll pay for them!  An current active "L" should bring you about $32.00 an hour, a "Q" should bring you about $36.00 an hour!   These numbers don't reflect Per Diem!

LOL, RG

how they doin' hiring only cleared people down there? are they outbidding other DOE sites? Doesn't sound like it.
At some point the DOE projects are either going to have to declassify some of their areas, hire escorts or start processing new clearances.

Energy Solutions just had 2 HP slots posted on their careers section. Not cleared though.

I think we are gonna see these companies have the employee fill out the Q paperwork prior to starting with the company.
I just can't see how they will bring that many people in to do K-25, ORNL, Y-12, etc., and say "Cleared People Only".
Something will have to change, because the current method is not working for us or the companies.

I saw the postings for Health Physicists, didn't see any for RCT's.
I know this way is not working for us. That's why so many of us that were at Oak Ridge are now bouncing from outage to outage.
How much work is going on at K-25 and who has the action?
