Title: NUF exam
Post by: hollywoodparke on Aug 07, 2008, 06:02
I am interested in finding out who/whom is overseeing the testing these days. In the past I could call some guy back at Salem or somewhere back east that kept track of testing. Is it still the same or has someone or some company taken over tracking who took it when?
Can they be contacted? Any info would be help. Thanks in advance
Title: RP Fundamentals or NUF certification exam help
Post by: ccoope on Jul 22, 2009, 03:00
Which material on this website "or any other site" would be most beneficial for me as far as taking the Rp Fundamental or NUF exam on nantel?  These are the links I was told of. "http://www.nukeworker.com/study/hp/neu/condensed_study_guides/index.shtml" and "http://www.nukeworker.com/quiz/" Just wanting a second opinion for an official study guide.  Something that mirrors the exam as close as possible.  Any advice?

There is also a study guide available on NANTeL once you have been assigned the exam on NANTeL.

The study information for the NUF on this site is an exact copy of the 'official' information  on the WesTrain site.  Our free online practice tests are worded similar and cover similar topics.

The New NUF Cram Notes is finally available:

NUF Cram Notes Kindle Edition (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M8JICV0/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00M8JICV0&linkCode=as2&tag=nukeworkercom-20&linkId=SDJIE4PI6JBGFBHR)
NUF Cram Notes Print Edition (https://www.createspace.com/4921175) <- Rennhack's Favorite

It's about 3x the size of the original.  I highly recommend it.  It is more detailed than the original.  This version is aimed at the less experienced NUF test taker than the original "RP Cram Notes (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006F6X35M/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B006F6X35M&linkCode=as2&tag=nukeworkercom-20&linkId=K7N4TRYHGMKCNPFC)".

A quick question about the NUF.  I have been practicing the NUF on this site and have made 80% and above on all tests except 1.  I have to take the NUF in order to satisfy part of the testing required for graduating from the RPT program at a local community college.  I would love to know if these practice exams are anywhere close to the real exam, and also if the questions on the real exam are limited to 60 seconds to answer?  Thanks in advance.

I'm taking the NUF exam Tuesday of next week.
Pulled down the study icon on Nukeworker, been reviewing the NP1-5 and RP1-5.
Taken the free practice exams.
Look over the abbreviated study guide.
Is there any new up to date stuff that cut thought the chase.
Any help would be appreciated

one more thing to consider when you are studying--The problems are often multistep.  For example they may give some amount of activity of C0-60 and then ask what dose rate is at 3 ft if there is a tenth thckness of material shielding it.  If you break it down its not hard but you have to be able to see it as 3 seperate problems.    Don't freak when you see the problems -- take a deep breath and see if you can break it into smaller pieces.  Too many people  that I see taking it panic when they initally read problem and then just guess.  That rarely seems to be work out.

The only way I know of how the testing kept track of is on PADS or on Nantel.  You take it at a plant and they put the results in your PADs, or it is in the Nantel system if you take it there.

In my notes from the NUF tome I was studying from say:

Fast neutrons: QF=10

Thermal (slow) neutrons: QF=3

That's all I got written down in my sidebar... those numbers weren't even actually IN the WesTrain study guide. I wrote them down additionally. Hope it's right...?

It has to be taken at a commercial nuclear plant with access to the PADS and NANTeL system.  That happens when they are hired to work.

They can prepare for the test with our resources, so that they pass the test the first time.

Any clue if there is a way to take it pre being employed?  The problem they are running into is that power plants wont hire them without it, yet no one will test them ahead of time.
Title: Re: NUF exam
Post by: Rennhack on Aug 30, 2012, 06:30
They can contact the power plant that won't hire them without it, and ask them to allow your friend to come take the test.  It is likely that the power plant will allow them to take the test, it's not an unheard of request.  Of course, your friend will have to do it at a time that is convenient to the onsite proctors.  Is there a site your friend is local to, so they don't have to drive across the country?  You can contact their training department, or RP department and make the request.
Title: Re: NUF exam
Post by: Rennhack on Aug 30, 2012, 06:31
And where are these younger techs being laid off from?  They should take it at the site they are currently at before they leave. (Assuming they are at a power plant).

What steps have these younger techs taken to prepare for the test? To ensure they are not wasting their time, and the valuable time of the utility trainers?

No, they are at the Hanford site.  Some of the techs took the test through Columbia last fall and went onto outages.  There are a few this year in danger of the layoffs and they were attemping to do the same.

Post by: Rennhack on Aug 30, 2012, 06:52
That's great news, have the techs contact Columbia's RP training people, and request to take the NANTeL NUF RP exam.

But before they do that, have them review the full study guides we have online for free, take our free online practice test, then get a copy of our 'Concise' study guide, and review that. before they sit for the test.

It has been 7 years since I have had to take the NUF(NEU).  How similar are the practice NUF questions on this site to the actual exam?  Is the exam timed (two minutes per question)?  Just trying to get a real feel for the new exam format.  I have taken the practice exam 8 times and my lowest grade has been 76 (only failure).  I have my problems trying to do the math problems with a time limit.  My only worry is trying to do the more involved math problems if they are timed.
Title: Re: NUF exam

The questions are similar, they are not timed like ours are.  As I said in several of the linked messages above (hint hint) if you can take our test ten times and get a 100 on it each time, you will have no problem passing the NUF.  Also check out our condensed study guide.

The question on the practice exam on this site states that the work will take 3 hours in a mixed field of 100mr/hr gamma, 200 mr/hr thermal, and 100 mr/hr fast with an answer of 3900 mRem.  If I use the QF's as stated above that would give (100+400+1000)(3hr) = 4500mRem.  Is the answer on the practice exam wrong?  or maybe the fast is supposed to 8?  Or, are the thermal/fast QF's 1/10? 3/6?
