Title: Oak Ridge
Post by: Camella Black on Apr 08, 2004, 05:29
Some of my favorites for this area include:

FOOD:
Rockwood : Ivan's on Roane Street has a great chicken salad with apples and grapes. Good menu for lunch or dinner.

Harriman: You just can't go wrong with Cracker Barrel, its located off I-40 exit 347.

Off the beaten track/great places to visit:

Jack Daniels Distillery, Lynchburg TN, its free to tour, no tasting but well worth the trip.

Applebarn Cider Mill and General Store, Sevierville TN, 230 Apple Valley Road. Exit !-40 exit 407. If it has to do with an apple - they have it. Great food too.

Consider yourself on the sub list, Wayne. What is your last name? Sorry, I forgot.

This Thursday night (8-18-05) at 6:00 PM, we will be at Bailey's.
I am turning 40 on Thursday, and I have let them talk me into showing up for the party. Like I would miss it, right?
If you come, no "Old" jokes. I am very sensitive and my ego bruises easily.
See ya there...

OK, we have a Halloween party at Bailey's this Thursday at 7:00 PM.
Yes, we are wearing costumes. You don't have to wear one, but most of us will be.

Also, I could use a couple female subs and a couple male subs for Wednesday night Co-Ed bowling also.

I'll give you an option. We bowl every Wednesday at 6:00 and then go to Bailey's afterwards. We also go to the Comedy Zone on Thursday nights at 8:00. I am also going to post a dinner cruise for March 3rd in Knoxville. Keep your eyes open for that one.

This thread is so dead.

Does that mean the "Oak Ridge" is finally cleaned up or everyone so busy spending that money! 8)

Oak Ridge is booming right along...and the pay just keeps on rising.  Pick your poison on whom you wish to work for.

What positions are available?  I've contacted a couple of companies, but they told me they have nothing available right now.

Did you try DeNuke I know they have hired a few in the last month or so for Y-12. They bumped pay scales as well.

That sounds "YUMMY", maybe I need to do the dirty DOE thing instead of the outage thingy.

Any reason for doing one over the other?

Thanks :D

Biggest advantage is length of jobs, even as subcontractors. Most of the work in Oak Ridge for the next three years will be demolition, waste management, and remediation at all three major sites. Radiological hazard level for these are usually very low with a greater industrial hazard than the power plants. Many of these buildings were built in the 40s and 50s. If you are coming from a Power Plant you will need to adjust to a different pace of work and new set of rules for relative risk where radiological may not be the primary hazard. The jobs themselves center around waste management as that is what you will be doing, generating large piles of waste to be characterized, containerized, and shipped for disposal.

Companies that are currently hiring or have recently hired here in Oak Ridge:
SEC (SECRADCON)
DeNuke
ENERGX
LSI
Most Sr RCT positions pay around $29-$31/hr. Some pay more and pay perdiem. Check some of the older job postings on this site and you'll find contacts. There's lots of work. SEC is currently bringing in survey technicians to try to fill positions. DOE clearances are a big plus but not absolutely necessary.
