Okay, so I'll display my complete ignorance here...
I would ASS-U-ME that an outage is a planned activity in which the plant is idled. Beyond that, what would an aspiring nuke worker need to know about them?
Thanks,
McBride

You just won the award for the most open question ever posted on this site.
If you read just about every thread you can on this site you will begin to know what an outage is. You are right that it is when the plant shuts down for refueling and maintenance. It is the center of the universe for nuclear plants even for the ones that run well and don't have unplanned ones. It is the reason for the existance of the contract workers... it is life itself.
OK, so I got carried away a bit -- but only a little bit. Seriously, that is such an open question that it is impossible to answer as it stands. Read the messages on the boards to get an idea and then ask specifics. And welcome to NukeWorker.com
