Title: Concise NUF Study Guide
Post by: Rennhack on Nov 27, 2011, 04:45
The New NUF Cram Notes is finally available:

NUF Cram Notes Kindle Edition (http://amzn.to/2cCVDqr)
NUF Cram Notes Print Edition (https://www.createspace.com/5747678)

It's about 3x the size of the original.  I highly recommend it.  It is more detailed than the original.  This version is aimed at the less experienced NUF test taker than the original "RP Cram Notes (https://www.createspace.com/5747678)".

I do not own either a kindle or a nook. Is there a on line version.

What is the value of having it on a Kindle? Is it interactive, or just in book form?

I do have an IPod Itouch and have electrical apps.

Why isn't there an IPod app that you can get it?

Thank You

The value of having it in Kindle format, is that Amazon has a Kindle reader (for free) for every electronic device.  Every Apple Product, Every Android/Google Product, and Every Microsoft Product.  This includes, Phones, Tablets, Desktops, Laptops, IPods, Blackberrys, web browsers (cloud) -- EVERYWHERE.  Putting in Kindle format makes it easy for people to have it where they want it.  – But most all of those devices should also be able to read the free PDF I linked above as well.

And here is a page with links to all of the different free:  Kindle readers for every platform. There is.  Go to your Ipod app store and search for Kindle.  Or just figure out how to put the free PDF on your Ipod (download it, store it on your computer, then transfer it over with Itunes.

Here is a link to the iTunes page for the Kindle App:

Update:

The 'Super Abbreviated NUF Study Guide' aka 'RP Cram Notes' has been downloaded 491 times (http://www.nukeworker.com/forum/index.php/topic,33667.msg154681.html#msg154681) for free from us, and purchased 53 times (36 times kindle, 17 times Nook).  That is 544 total distributions.

So, whats the verdict?  Did it help anyone?  Was it the concise study material you needed for the NUF?

I'd REALLY love some feedback from people that used it.

Be honest, I can take criticism.  What ways would you like to see it improved?  What ways was it perfect?

Mike,
Having taken the NUF via NANTEL in Apr 2011 and Apr 2012 at Columbia and Fermi respectively and having reviewed the Amazon Edition of Nukeworker.com Cram Notes (nice job by the way), I noticed the absence of these minor topics in the text.

F18
Glow curve
P10 mix
Gm sensitivity

The two tests I took were remarkably similar to each other and to the Amazon Edition of Nukeworker.com Cram Notes.

wlrun3,

Thank you for the feedback.  I assume you mean those topics are in the test(s) and not in the cram notes.  That is exactly what I'm looking for.  If you could email me some bullet points that I should include for those 4 items, I'll include them in the next revision.

Also, If you could come up with some practice questions for the online practice test, we could include them there as well.

Mike,
I will email you the bullet points soon. Thank you for asking. Until then here are the facts that were on both of the NUF exams that I recently took but were not directly addressed in NukeWorker.com RP Cram Notes.
Again, great job on your book.

F18...water activation product

Glow curve...in reference to annealing (heating) Tld's

P10 mix...10% methane , 90% argon (corrected, thankyou)

Gm sensitivity...inferior to sodium iodide microR  for gamma given detection medium densities

Mike,
The abbreviated (super) is what I tell people to look over before they take either the NEU of DOE tests and mark(highlight)the items they aren't sure about and spend quality time reviewing those items or subjects and not waste time on what they already know.

But that is just me.

Don't tell them to use it for the DOE Core.  It's not targeted at that.  I COULD make one of those too.  Tell the DOE folks to take our online practice test.  The Super Abbreviated study guide aka RP Cram notes are only to be used to refresh your memory for our NUF practice test or the NANTeL NUF test.  It is tightly focused on the objectives of those tests.

RP CRAM NOTES
NukeWorker.com's Super Abbreviated Study Guide for the Nuclear Utilities Fundamentals (NUF) Radiation Protection (RP) Exam
By Michael D. Rennhack
This is an extremely abbreviated study guide, meant only to be a quick refresher for technicians that have already taken the test, or who have already studied the full text. Knowing this material will not teach you everything about being an RP, the other study guides do that. This is just a quick refresher for our online practice test.

Great news everyone!  Amazon dropped the price on the Paperback to $8.13 (From $9.99), and they allowed me to add the kindle to the "Matchbook" program, which means that if you buy the paperback, you can get the kindle version for just 99 cents (instead of the $2.99 they usually charge for the kindle version).  So now you can get The paperback plus Kindle version both for a total of $9.12, instead of $9.99 for the Paperback, or $13 for both.  This is a great deal.

Update: I just read the fine print, and it says that the Matchbook program ""...will not appear on Amazon.com until the program is fully launched in the coming weeks."  So hang on for just a little longer.

I don't know when the Matchbook program will begin, other than "October".  However, according to the link below "For thousands of qualifying books, your past, present, and future print-edition purchases will soon allow you to buy the Kindle edition for $2.99, $1.99, or $0.99. Available for thousands of great print books purchased new from Amazon, going all the way back to 1995 when Amazon first opened its online bookstore."  So I'd suggest you buy the print edition now, and wait to get the kindle version until it gets cheaper.

The formula you have shown in the Cram Notes Guide for calculating an air sample is incorrect. It should be NCPM divided by ( eff x vol cc x 2.22E6 ). This will give you an answer of 6.98E-8 uCi/cc. If you use the formula you have shown you get an answer of 1.38E12 uCi/cc.
Title: Re: Super Abbreviated NUF Study Guide

What were the numbers that you used to calculate 1.38e12 uCi/cc?
In the notes the formula is provided as ncpm/eff x 2.22e6 x volcc.
1.396e-3/20,000 is another way to calculate the same answer

To make it easier:

dpm/liter x 4.5E-10=results in uci/ml (or cc)     if given volume in cf, there are 28.3 liters/cf

To the best of my knowledge, there are no cubic feet questions.  All the volume is in LPM or cc.  "To make it easier", Lets not confuse them with info they don't need.

Then the d/l conversion IS easier.

By that I mean "dpm/liter x 4.5 E-10=results in uci/ml" is much simpler than dealing with division using 2.22E6 along with the other factors--even with a calculator.

Ummm... 'x 4.5e-10' is exactly the same as ' /2.22e6' since 1/4.5e-10 = 2.22e9 and changing liters to ml makes 2.2e6. I can't remember the last time I took a sample in liters*, and the conversion is necessary somewhere along the line. So... no savings.

* Although some days I barely remember what I had for breakfast.
Title: Re: Super Abbreviated NUF Study Guide
Post by: mars88 on Jan 07, 2014, 10:57
I only take samples in liters, and multiplying is always preferable to dividing--so lots of savings for me (37 minutes last year alone).

If you do sample in ml, then just use 4.5E-7.

If you think that multiplying is easier than dividing, you need to practice your math or get a better calculator.

If you are not joking about 37 minutes being a lot of savings over a year you need to get a better life.

If you only take samples in liters then I guess you can be forgiven due to your lack of experience.  ;)

This is not the place to do this.  Please refrain from this line of replies, and re-read the forum rules. (http://www.nukeworker.com/forum/index.php/topic,4700.0.html)  This applies to everyone, not just the poster I quoted.

The formula shown in the guide is (ncpm) (eff) (2.22E6) (vol cc) = uCi/cc. This is incorrect. There is no division symbol in the formula show in the guide that I downloaded. ( ) means multiply. The correct formula is (ncpm) / (eff x 2.22E6 x vol cc) = uCi/cc

I'm not sure which guide you are referring to (and which version of the study guide), but my copy of the RP Cram Notes on my Kindle (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006F6X35M?tag=nukeworkercom-20&camp=213381&creative=390973&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B006F6X35M&adid=0NCA066JNYMMHBEJF1WY&&ref-refURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nukeworker.com%2Fforum%2Findex.php%2Ftopic%2C33676.0.html) has the "/" in there.  It's also correct in my Copy of the paperback RP Cram Notes (http://www.amazon.com/dp/1477512942?tag=nukeworkercom-20&camp=213381&creative=390973&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=1477512942&adid=0RN28MDXVWNF33P783PC&&ref-refURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nukeworker.com%2Fforum%2Findex.php%2Ftopic%2C33676.0.html).

I also checked the RP-5 section of the 'official NUF 'study guide (http://www.nukeworker.com/study/hp/neu/Part_2_Radiation_Protection/RP-5_Survey_Techniques_And_Emergency_Considerations.pdf), and it's correct there as well.

So, please give me more details on WHAT you downloaded, and from where.  And even WHEN if you could.
