Title: How early do you show up to work?
Post by: allforthenukie on Jan 23, 2007, 02:36
How early do nukeworkers report to work, unpaid, prior to the start of shift and why? For those of you who show up really early for work, what do you do during that time before start of shift?

I aim for 5-10 minutes early...that way I don't get stressed if I lose a couple of minutes on the drive, at security, etc.

Being a housemouse on a twelve hour rotation, I try to arrive five or ten minutes early but often end up ringing the bell.  On a twelve hour rotation, what comes around goes around - it does not pay to be tardy too often. On the opther hand, we have some guys who show up like clock work thirty minutes early every time.

If it's an outage and there's people who need to be relieved, I like to get there a little early to get them out on time.

Working 40's?  Right on time.   My time is too precious to just GIVE to the company.

I usually try to be about 15 minutes early. Mostly because I just hate to rush. There's enough of that once I get to the control point. Why put myself through that as soon as I get to the gate?
It's just nice to have my own time to get changed, chat with any friends I might see who are getting off shift, and make sure I can relieve on time if not a few minutes early.

I'm not anal about many things but I am about being somewhere on time.  I don't want to be late cause I needed to buy gas.   I feel like I'm behind all day if I get somewhere late or either right on the money.  Also I don't mind being somewhere a few minutes early but get pissed if my relief is a minute late.  I tell my kids that you may not be able to be the best at something but you can damn well be there on time.

Excellent Point!

People can be the biggest jerks in the world, but if they're opposite shift and show up to relieve me early, then I'll be happy to have them at the outage!

If I am late in (ie. no one to relieve) I aim for 10 minutes or so.  If I am the relief guy I owe it to the guy that has been there for 12 hours to be a little earlier than that.

I have always thought of it as a give and take as ar as unpaid time goes.  For every time I have had to give up a little time I am sure I could find an example of being taken care of for staying over a few minutes and having a good boss that will throw that extra 1/2 - 1 hour over on my time sheet.

I always try to be 15 to 30 minutes early for turnover at outages but will also leave 15to 30 minutes early if I am certain of a proper turnover on the flip side.

I try to leave my house early enough to still be tastefully early despite traffic or problems in the Guard shack.  That usually makes me about 20 to 30 minutes early on the job (or for turnover meetings).  That way, the other shift gets out on time (and they usually return the favor).
However, I don't push the envelope on the way out the gate.  I stick to whatever allowances the house has granted.

as a general rule i would say i try to get to site about 20-30 minutes early that allows me time to change into my scrubs and have a small bite to eat and a drink before i head up to the floor to relieve the other crew.

I agree with everyone. I like to clear security about 30 min prior to shift start. More if I need to. I like to be relieved on time, so I do my best to return the favor.

It is especially nice to get paid for showing up early, but that doesn't always happen.

Go to work and go home in the dark.

Neil Boortz

I normally show up 20-30 minutes before my shift.

About 8 years ago my LPO cured me of bell tapping by having me field day Shaft Lube Oil bay by myself for a few days.

Cured.

About 8 years ago my LPO cured me of bell tapping by having me field day Shaft Lube Oil bay by myself for a few days.

I had an LPO comment that I was almost late. I replied that where I came from, there was a term for that (ON TIME!)
15 minutes of free time is my limit for non-relief positions.
Of course, when I am relieving someone it is a different story.

On the average...45 min. to 1 hr.  :o I wanted to avoid the gatehouse shift change, (i.e. long lines!!) >:( ;)be able to get a cuppa joe, a PROPER turnover @ the HP office, AND get the outgoing tech 'outta the plant ON TIME!! ;D

Yeah, in order to avoid the traffic jams an extra 1.5 hours ahead and just hit the gym or something, SSS, get some yum yums and ease into a shift.

Then your afternoon is free.

Usually 15-30 minutes ahead of time so I'm not rushed but it gives me just enough time to catch up with whats happening.

I am usually at work about 15-20 minutes early.  I work a 12 hour rotation and will return the favor to my relief guy for being late by grabbing a coffee and showing up in the EO area right on time and making the turnover last as long as I can.  I don't believe in showing up late to get revenge.  If I show up late, then I am breaking the rules and in the wrong.

10-15 mins under 'normal' conditions. 20-30 if I'm doing a relief.

I try to relieve at least 10 minutes before I am scheduled..... that usually has me showing up an hour before shift start to get the straight poop and my ducks in  line ;D

I always show up early, in order to take relief. My relief tends to show up late, in order to gain a half hour or so a day.

If I do happen to be late I'll leave early so as to not be late twice in the same day.

The increased security makes it harder for hitting the turnstile on the minute for those who did that as a habit.

If you wake up late, you should call in "sick" so as to not get a bad reputation. Unless its a Monday or a Friday, then you get subject to the concept of once is a accident, twice is a coincidence, third time is a pattern. I once had a Tech working an outage who altered between a Monday and a Friday every other week for the entire outage. (Glaring pattern there)

I aim for at least 45 minutes early.  I always have some moron who I have to relieve and he never bothers to actually do HIS job, so I have to do it.  OR I do my personal favorite: walk in and plant a 75 yard field goal kick into his backside and tell him he has whatever time there is until I start to get his job done.  Then I go help him so I don't catch the heat.

Usually get in about 10 min. before turnover on nights when we're up and running and everthing is running smooth..,  gets the dayshift people out before the bell.  On time when its dayshift because we have those who like to come in and read the paper (straight days) so why come in early and bother them?  During outage lead tech, in 30 min. before shift and 30 min. after but at least I get paid for it :)

I hate being relieved late or even "at the buzzer".  Guess its from all those years on the submarines.
