Title: Susquehanna Lodging
Post by: Rennhack on Dec 01, 2002, 12:23
If anyone has lodging information for this facility, please post it here.

Stone Castle Motel, South of Berwick isn't too bad.
Cheep rent, will take a personal check but no credit cards.
Will cash a PD check if part of it pays your rent for the week.
Refrigerator & microwave in most rooms.
Clean but no frills.
Check out Bell Bend Apartments. Its within stones throw of the site.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Press Enterprise is the local newspaper, they are online (www.pressenterpriseonline.com). You can view the apartments they have for rent in the "Classifieds" under "Real Estate for Rent".

Currently have a couple of openings approximately 1 mile from Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (SSES). Furnished, utilities included, move right in. Call (570) 752-3968 or e-mail mecope@webtv.net for more information.

Stone Castle is as advertised.  The weekly rate is 132.50, after four weeks they drop the tax and it becomes 125.00.  About the only drawback is there are no phones in any of the rooms.  Other than that, what a deal!

And about the Stone Castle....
stayed there a couple of years ago...
don't expect to take a shower there...
the H20 stinks & I can pee faster!

Bloomsburg and Berwick are closer to the plant, but there are not much to choose from though.  There are a few places to choose from Wilkes-Barre, I know it is a little ways to drive to and from the plant.  But, it is almost like that every where you go to.  There are few suites and motels around Wilkes-Barre area. blueml56

Has anyone tried the Buckhorn Econolodge? I used to stay there all the time when I drove back and forth from CT/Millstone to Illinois. From what I can remember, Buckhorn was pretty close to Berwick.

ok, not sure if this is going to help anyone or not, but there is a brand new Hampton Inn, just built in August, at the Bloomsburg exit off of I-80, I think it is #336, it is the one between the Buckhorn exit and the Berwick exit
I live in Bloomsburg and just noticed it the other day.
I spoke with a very nice lady there and she said that it is $92.00 a night - but - if you call and ask for the manager they might be able to work out a better rate.  the phone number is 570-380-1020.
Good luck and Happy New Year!

It's been a few years, but I stayed in a campground in Wapwollopen (sp?). Can't remember the name, but anyone with an RV can tell you. They had a few cabins to rent that were clean and inexpensive.

;)    At Susquehanna for the U1R16 outage.  Some updates and rambling on lodging.  Most motels will only rent by the week, this lets them keep the local tax when your rental goes over one month.  Get over it.   Places discussed in prior postings:
Red Maple, about $245 a wk.  Not bad, owners are nice and keep it clean, I stayed there a week and had no complaints except daytime traffic noise. Good internet service and no problems with water/showers/heat.  Takes about 20 minutes to the plant. Not for Night workers unless you use ear-plugs (of course YMMV), thats why I moved.  Same for Patriot INN,about the same price, it is next to a pretty nice restaurant, not far from stores and a couple of bars. Same noise level.  Bloomsberg <nearby town> is heavy on college kids in the bars if you're looking for night life.  Lots of VFW and American Legion around, if you're a member, all have bars and some have food.
Last year stayed at a motel on Rt 93, called the Lookout.  Was cheap and I got what I paid for  :-[ , dirty, bad cleaning service, so-so internet access, very noisy in the daytime because of a major road with heavy gravel/sand trucks.  The restaurant next door made a great steak sandwich and served a decent drink  :-)
New motel in the area where I am now is a Motel 6 in Mifflinville, $305 a week, coffee/tea and donuts/snacks for workers at 5 AM.  Have to ask for the PPL rate. They will really work with you about room cleaning if you do shift work, rooms facing away from I-80 are quiet in the daytime, new furnature, TV and good internet. They have a pool and jacuzzi, but both are closed :-(( Very close to a Micky-D, Arby and Subway, use Rt 339 through Nescopeck to get to the plant, travel is about 20-25 minutes.  To get to Bloomsberg downtown is about 15 minutes, the Columbia mall in about 20 also. There is a Days Inn on the otherside of I-80, looks OK, expect it to be noisier because its next to the truckstop.
A coworker is at the Days Inn in Wilkes-Barre, about $305 a week also, his travel is about 25 miles and 35 minutes, not much traffic, he is happy with the location, its near a lot of restaurants and shopping.  Not much private rental, very few furnished apartments, but a few do get posted on Bulletin Boards at the plant <usually inside, where you see them after the outage starts>.
The Unicorn restaurant in Nescopeck, across the bridge from Berwick, opens at 5 AM with a very good breakfast and real nice people.  High five for their food and prices.

I can vouch for this. I am staying here and this setup is absolutely perfect. Except for a pool, this place is the bomb at $55 a night. That is with the PPL rate. A diamond in the rough.

I just talked with the ramada inn in hazleton the manager who I could barley understand gave me a price with the ppl discount of $750 a month if paid weekly it would be $250 a week. any reviews on this one. I stayed at a motel operated by indians and it was the worst experience I had ever had.  So just wanted to see if anyone has stayed there before

One man's opinion: I stayed in Hazleton and it wasn't a bad drive. Took me about 25 minutes (small town drivers). There is alot more to do in Hazleton as far as stores, restaurants, movie theaters, etc.

I stayed at the Candlewood Suites near that Ramada Inn. It is literally right next to the interstate but is very quiet. The place is like brand new and they offer a PPL rate of 55 a night, I believe. It has a real refrigerator, dishwasher, stove with all the pots, pans, plates and kitchen accessories. The staff is great. There is a nice workout room, the laundry room is free. They have snacks in the lobby with milk, eggs, bacon, etc. for those nights when you dont want to leave the hotel.

You won't be disappointed with this place. I stayed there for 2 and a half months.

+1 on this.

Was supposed to be at Millstone but got switched up to Susquehanna. I'm staying at Candlewood Suites and it is a very nice place, brand new basically. The rooms are pretty big and has everything you need. 55 a night is still the rate for PPL. No taxes after a month. Pet Friendly for those who may have to bring theirs. Pet fee is 10 bucks a night up to 14 nights max so $140 at most. Nicest place around for the price. Pictures do no justice really.

I recently completed a 10 month assignment at Susquehanna.  I settled into a place in Berwick as I didn't want a long commute to and from the site.  I found the White Birch Inn (WBI)as a temporary place to stay until I found a long term place to stay.  I talked with the owners at the WBI and they worked with me on the cost and got it down to $1000 a month.  They have off street parking and full run of a house with kitchen and usually your own bathroom.  They have two properties in Berwick on Market Street.  About 7 miles to the station.  Give Mike and Laura a try.  http://www.thewhitebirchinn.com/

Hello.

I am a PPL employee and am renting out a room in my home for an outage worker. It is $600 a month with all utilities, internet and a bed included. The lease would be for 2 months and can be renewed if needed after the 2 months are up. There is only one bathroom, but I am rarely home.

I live about 15 miles from the plant outside of Bloomsburg.

I have a cat, so you have to be nice to her if you want to rent the room : )
