Title: Any info concerning 2011 job oppurtunities in Oak Ridge? (entry-level)
Post by: LeoAnimus on Jan 16, 2011, 12:37
Hello everyone!

I'm Keith Prater and I just moved here to Oak Ridge in November. My question is how often do entry-level type positions become available and what are some ways to grab the attention of the local employers? How is 2011 looking as far these types of positions?

I unfortunately have zero experience in this industry but am trying to break in. I'm trying to learn a much as I can about the types of positions in this industry from FAQs, forums and my father-in-law (who works at EnergySolutions, but is in contracting of waste disposal). I've got my eye on companies like EnergySolutions, Kelly, SEC etc. to open up new positions.

Ideally, I'd like to land a job as a JR HP Tech or absolutely any kind of entry-level decon work that provides room to move up and the opportunity to learn more. I'm not afraid of starting "in the trenches" or having to study for and pass a job-related examination. I understand for something along the lines of Jr. HP Technician training is usually provided and the few openings I've seen in the past required a GED or High-school Diploma only.

A little about me: I'm 26 years old with a wife and 3 month old son. I earned a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology from UGA in May 2010. I have some experience in a research lab working with hazardous biological and chemical materials.

Any advice/insight from the folks that know this industry and these specific areas (health physics, decon) would be hugely appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read!

Waste management/environmental would be a good avenue as well, there will massive amounts of waste coming out of the Oak Ridge reservation over the next 15 to 20 years if not longer. There are entry level positions there as well.
