Title: You've been together HOW long?
Post by: Camella Black on Jul 23, 2004, 02:50
This question has been asked of Henry and I on and off for the past several years. Seems we're beating the odds as we've almost made it to 25 years together. I was curious to how many more of you have made a go at a life on the road and kept your partnership together.

21 years and counting!

Got "hitched" 2 months after hitting the road in 1983.

Like I heard someone on the radio say .... "Divorce has never been an option, .... though on occasion MURDER has come to mind ....."

Truth is, there is probably no one else on the face of the earth that would put up with me.

Unlike the rest of you, we have made it 6 years and counting. Congrats to all 20+ year couples! In this day and age it is making a statement to commitment to stay married over 10 years!
Update...We were Jr. High sweethearts and apart for 26 years before finding each other again and then deciding to marry...what an amazing world we live in! Karma to everyone!

Me and ratwife have been married over 25 years now  :P , I got married after getting out of the Navy (nuke subs) during my first commercial outage. We traveled together for many years until the rug-rats got old enough for school, then ratwife nested and I went out on outages. I got one in College now and one just turning 16. We are working on getting darkson a truck (I introduced him to the wonders of Bondo).

Congrats! Just wait until darkson is out of house too, then you and ratwife can go back to traveling together. Thats what hubby and I do, of course I go back and forth home cause they (the kids) just can't seem to do without momma.

We started dating in 1976 (sophmore year in high school).  Been together ever since.  We married in 1980 and we have two son's, 21 and 17.  My wife has put up with the road and being house.  I don't think either of us could train another!  ;)

2004 has been the best year yet, but I am looking forward to being able to travel together after all the little Bama fans are out of the house. (This summer was a nice preview!)

Nineteen years in Dec. My poor but wonderfull wife put up with the navy, shift work at comanche peak, 9 years as a truck mechanics wife (gooy grease and the smell of 80W90 oil) and now time in the desert away from her beloved trees. I really don't deserve such a loving person but I'm glad she puts up with me. :)

21+ years and she traveled with me to nearly every job with kids in tow. Tried to get her to stay put in the beginning but she said she didn't have these kids on her own and she wasn't going to raise them by herself. She seemed pretty determined so I just did like I was told.

My husband, Henry and I traveled with 3 children also from 1981 to 1988 when I came off the road. It has been very hard living almost 2 seperate lives for the past 16 years, we kept the phone company and airlines in business to keep in touch. It has been nice these last 2 years traveling with him again. Here's too all those wives at home . . .

Pappy, I know your problem, you must be stubborn. Anybody that keeps trying to make things work out, is either too stubborn for their own good or a brick short . . . if you get my meaning.

I wish you all the best on the next 10 years and more, 3rd times the charm. My dad was married 3 times and his last marriage to our mom lasted 30 years before he passed away.

There are still a few of us old timers that have beat the odds and are still married after a career as a Road Tech. I just passed 27 years with the same wife. She was an HP on the road with me for the first 5 years. I just met up with another couple that I had not seen since Oyster Creek in 1978.
It is easier now as I only do a couple of outages a year and we all know that it is hard to find a job that lasts more than 4 -5 weeks.

This spring I hope to celebrate 25 yrs of steady employment at the same plant.  I'm thankful for the stability this has provided my family all these years. If you can handle the road life, more power to ya. Enjoy the scenery while you can!
  Merry Christmas to all!!  MM

Forgive my ignorance...
what is a road tech (I assume you travel to fix stuff, but what do you all really do, how long do you travel) and what is an outage (again, when the power is out, but for a storm/disaster)?  Hub has been navy since he graduated hs and still is.  My uncle did line work in upstate NY, and used to travel when big storms would take out lines all over the state.

we have been married going on 9 years, all of it navy time.  2 girls.  it's wonderful to see families who have survived being apart!!

a "roadtech" is essentially a contractor or any one else that is part of the temporary labor force brought in during the outages which is a shut down for maintenance and refueling purposes.  Many consider a road tech HP or Decon but really the term can include any other profession that one would travel around and prostitute ones self to any given company for any amount of time generally for the most money one can find.  I know this isnt a great description but gimme a break I just worked until 3am.  Im sure some of these fine folks can go at it in further detail!

18 years. Engaged her, couldn't live without her and brought her to Idaho with me. Maried her in a court 8 weeks later.

I wanted her to have a church wedding so we got married again in a church 7 weeks after that.

Been together for 18 years last March. And yes we celebrate both anniversaries, and I haven't forgotten one yet.

It will be 20 years this October.  I'll bet those who knew "Big Buck" at Brunswick or Oconee in the early 80's never thought he would even get married much less stay married for 20 years.  ;)

Worked with "Big Buck" at Brunswick in the 80's - worked with him again lately at Hanford. He seems much more subdued now. Is that just getting older, or is that what 20 years of marriage did to him?

Congrats Marlin and Mrs. Marlin on making it to the 25 year mark. Henry and passed this milestone almost 2 years ago. We will be married 27 years on the 24th of November and still going strong.

We sure have seen some great times and shared many great memories of life on the road and off. We were barely married and had two small children our first outage which was at Turkey Point in 1981. Those were the days, were they not?

Mike, (you know I still call you Spanky) LOL. Yes time has flown by, I find it hard to believe it at times but the mirror, scale and my growing children don't lie.

I commend anyone who has weathered the storm of marriage + life on the road. I have spent many holidays, weeks and even months either seperated from my parents and family or from my husband.

Techs today have no idea what being homesick is. For the most part they are spoiled and can't wait to miss a few days of a short outage to run home for the holidays. Don't get me wrong, I miss Henry and I like for us to be together. But I remember the time when outages were 9 months or longer and it may be 3, 4, or even 5+ months between trips home or us being together.

So here's to anyone whose made past the 7 year itch mark, I commend you.

P.S. Mike were you part of that crowd of newbies I helped chaperone to the Hank Williams concert?

Post by: Mike McFarlin on Nov 10, 2006, 12:58
No, I had been around since 78. Glad to hear that you both have learned to weather the storm when so many others have not. I miss the long outages and the security of going from one job to another. I remember the dialing for dollars with all the different companies. Also miss the friends you would make back then because of the length of the jobs.
I'm still Spanky (thanks to Mark Cooper)and guess I always will be. I have just 1 more day at Beaver Valley (1 month outage that turned into 2).
Take care and stay in touch....Spanky

When this poll was first posted, I was in the 1-5 year category, now I'm in the 15+ group.

32 for me and my missus, most on the road with a few breaks in house jobs.  Wouldn't trade her for nothing.  She has stuck it out and has been a real trooper with this whole mess.  She has had trouble with the traveling over the last 5-6 years so we have tried to settle it down somewhat.  Don't want to loose her over something stupid like a job.

It's been about 33 years so far and around half of that time, both of us were on the road and working together.  The last 16 has been spent at pretty much one location, though.  Techs that knew him before we met would have never believed he would still be married at this point in time.

It's been about 33 years so far....

in late '06 it was twenty years,....

now, in early '17 it is 33 years,...

which just goes to the point that married years are like dog years,....

the longer they go on the shorter they get and the more they pile up,...

until eventually, when you say 50 years, ya might as well just claim eternity,....

OK, let me clarify.  Married for 30 and "living in sin" on the road for the other 3.  Math should be about right, now.

My statement is like nukewood's.  I have been married a total of 35 years! It took two marriages to get there but you do what you gotta do.

Thought I would revive this one just for fun.

I have recently reached my 42nd year of remedial husband training.
