Title: Maintenance?
Post by: STF on Mar 06, 2009, 11:59
I have read a lot about going into operations.  Anybody out there in maintenance?  I am looking at both training jobs and maintenance.  Anybody at Grand Gulf or Calvert Cliffs  or Commanche Peak or Waterford 3?  My first week unemployed and I don't know if I time to go back to work. ;)  But really anybody at any of these or know anybody at any of these?

GGNS and Waterford are Entergy - jobs posted here on Nukeworker.com and at the corporate website www.entergy.com

Good luck - I think I saw a posting at the top of the page for Maint at Entergy... :)

I would also like to learn a little about maintenance, specifically the organizational makeup of the maintenance department of a nuclear plant.  I've seen titles in job postings, but those titles might not mean much if you don't know the department structure.  For the crafts, is the breakdown as simple as mechanical or electrical?  Or is it much more fragmented than that such as mechanical--fitters, welders, millwright, riggers etc and electrical--Instrumentation, controls, low voltage switchgear, protective relay specialist, etc.  If the crafts are really fragmented to specialties, is there a lot of "turf protection" at play, i.e. "we can't do XXX until the XXX group unscrews this light bulb"?

STF--How is your search progressing?  The postings that I'm referring to are still up, I believe, and were for: (I'm not a recruiter, I'm a job seeker.  If listing these here is not good, let me know)
Superintendant Maintenance (Electrical and Mechanical), Fermi 2
 Supervisor Maintenance (I&C), Fermi 2
Instrument Maintenance First Line Supervisor, Dresden..(this seems to have been up for a long time)
Nuclear Maintenance Supervisor (SA) - 12 Hour Shift , Salem
Nuclear Maintenance Supervisor (HC) - I&C , Salem

Thanks!

Nuke2EAF- my search really went crazy.  I was mainly looking to go back to my tools.  I have been an electrical instructor for about 7 yrs in manufacturing.  So all the maint. jobs I have applied for I got turned down.
But I am starting as late as 1 June as an electrical instructor at a nuke plant.  We are in the process of working with their relo. and getting our place ready to sell and move.
As far as recruiters go they have done nothing for me, the only one that has tried to work with me is Orion.

My guess is they already have people in mind for these. DTE rarely posts a public bid for these sort of jobs unless they have someone in mind.

Thanks Broadzilla.  I've submitted through the DTE Energy careers portal, still hoping someone contacts me from Fermi.  I grew up in site of those towers and have fished near them, kind of hoping to get back home.

You can see those towers from Oak Harbor so where'd you grow up?

When I left for the Navy, I lived on Grafton road in Carleton.  Our family had a boat docked in Brest Bay Marina.  Most of the growing up time was in Woodhaven, just a little up the road.  I seemed to have it all mapped out back then, service-->get out-->go to Fermi.  When it was time to get out, nothing was happening (or happening quick enough) at Fermi.  So I went another direction.

Man you did grow up in the shadow of the cooling towers.
I loved the Grafton Sports Bar and Calder Dairy Farm!

Only problem with Brest Bay is it gets so shallow in the fall.  Lost the skeg on my outdrive one fall.

Took a call today, have an interview set up at the end of next week at Braidwood!  Interview process looks to be pretty intense.  Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for the Exelon Supervisory Assessment?

Thanks!

You should have a packet, correct?  It tells you all you need to know.  Do what you would normally do in the situations presented.  Anyone who has taken the assessment cannot comment specifically because of the agreement you sign.

Congratulations on the interview.
