Title: Contractor Requirements for duke energy nuke plant
Post by: rm19862 on May 12, 2013, 06:13
Hello all, I am going to crystal river energy complex to change out some sheaves on some machines. What should i expect for safety, security etc. The nuke plant is supposed to be shut down, I am working in the coal plants. What is there to expect?

You should not be impacted by CR3 at all.

I think your question is kind of broad in a sense. What are you really looking to know? Obviously there are strict safety requirements at nukes and coal plants. Gaining clearance will be tougher on the nuke side than the coal side. Some sites that have both nukes and fossil will use the same guidelines.

I guess I'm just not sure what exactly you may be looking for answer wise..

Will I have to take osha tests. Drug screening, written tests?

I've already had a background check done.

When I see people ask about drug tests, I always wonder why the are asking.  I'm not implying that anyone is trying to hide anything, but I totally see how one could draw that conclusion.

My first drug test after 20 years of active duty I was ecstatic about because I didn't have another grown man watching the urine leave my body and enter the bottle ;D

I just wanted to know. I've been to numerous coal fired plants. I just didn't know what to expect with the cr3 being there. Thanks for the answers. It is hard to pee in front of somebody.

I would say yes, there would be a drug screening required. I'm sure there will be some computer based training you might receive. OSHA Training? Possibly according to the site requirements and your job scope. Safety meetings.. You'll have to wear PPE. You will have to qualified for the job of course.

You are working the Fossil side so it won't be too much different than what you have seen before. Security will undoubtedly be a lot more in force there compared to a site that is fossil only. I don't think you will see a drastic difference.

If it is just an in and out job, there is a possibility that you will be escorted the whole time. Surely someone will have to lead you to the plant equipment that you will be working on anyways. That would eliminate the need for all the background/prescreening. At least that is how some nukes handle it. That may not be the case since you are going to a nuke/coal site.
