NN,
Delete this post as quick as you can! You have just opened yourself up to about a hundred responses that will tell you to search the forum before posting. Not a single one of those reply posts will be incorrect, but each will be unique.

And despite what bradley says learning to search is correct advice.

Jest aside, kid is in highschool. I wanted to be a nuclear engineer when I was his age and my life went 37 different directions since then. He'll find his way or pick a new path.

Yeah, well.... part of any future applicant's education needs to include respecting the value of the time of others. The members that respond are experienced professionals. At a minimum, they can show that respect by putting down the frickin' Facebook and do a thorough search first. One day, when the child becomes the squid becomes the operator becomes the panel RO...like it or not you will agree with me  :P

I completely agree with you sir! :)

hello,

How do I become a nuclear operator?

There are a couple of paths you could take.

1) Obtain a 2 year technical degree and get hired as an NLO.
2) Join the USN nuclear power program for 6 years and get hired as an NLO.

The problem with both of these minimal paths is that right now, you would be competing with people with 4 year degrees and more time/qualifications from the Navy.

IMHO, the Navy path would be a better way for someone still in highschool. Besides getting to "see the world," you gain real world on the job experience while earning the fantastic new post 9/11 GI Bill.

As for physical work, you will typically take rounds, (AKA logs, readings), for the first few hours of a shift. This will require you to WALK your entire space. After that, you will get involved in any testing required for that day that may include you turning valves, racking breakers, etc.

You are also expected to perform minor housekeeping of your spaced along the way.

You will typically be trained as part of the fire brigade as well. Other collateral quals may also include first aid/CPR, fork lift driver, minor rigging, etc.

I hope that helps.

I said the new GI Bill was a great benefit, but based on this recent post, it might not last forever...... so consider that in your decision making.

FYI....

I don't normally post scuttlebutt, but this is one I believe.

I know someone who saw a brief that shows that by 2016, the cost of the new GI Bill would be 70% of the military budget.  While I don't necessarily believe that it will be that much, it will likely be a significant amount, making the new GI Bill unsustainable in the current fiscal environment.

Take it easy fella.  The people that post on this board are professionals in the industry, they know what they are talking about.  This is not a place for leetspeak or text-type chat.  It does not make a good impression to approach this message board with that type of communication.  Would you communicate with a potential employer in this manner?  Just think about it.

NLO = Non Licensed Operator, considered by many to be the best entry level position in the nuclear business.  An NLO is responsible for monitoring plant equipment, performing tests and maintaining a clean area in the plant.  They work for the control room operators.

As far as the type of degree, anything technical is a huge plus for getting into this industry.  If it is accredited then that is even better.  But to be perfectly honest there were people with agriculture degrees in my NLO class.  Most places require a minimum of some physics or chemistry along with some math.

Work on your communcation skills and don't get offended so easily. ;D

Um, I didn't "QQ" about anything. How am I supposed to know if you are in HS or not, up until that point? I just assumed another poster was correct when he said you were still in HS. My post was respectful and helpful. I never once referred to you as a retard or put you down for anything, so I think I deserve... no, I demand the same respect in return.

Additionally, this isn't your gaming website, so I recommend not using terms like QQ.

Finally, any technical degree. Something you like that revolves around math and science.

I hope that helps.

You should probably stop "QQ"ing and "trololing" yourself. Do a search, this question has been answered in this thread a couple times, and MANY times elsehwere on this site.

That said, how do you have a "reenlistment code" without ever joining the navy?

Im only a couple years older then yourself, I recommend you chill out with accusations.

You lack the maturity to perform at any acceptable level (e.g. to include janitor) in Nuclear Power Generation.  In fact I doubt you could get badge as a contract painter.

So, my recommendation is to not waste anymore of your time trying to pursue this (re: Nuclear Power) any further.  Thusly, it would behove you to spend your time and money, wisely, for an education in gaming.

Sounds like you need to find a way to get some experience and go to a different school. You want this particular job, you are going to have to work for it. If that means changing your status quo to do so, then so be it.

You need to change the types of courses you are taking. For example, here is what is required for an AS in nuclear engineering technology;

http://www.tesc.edu/3054.php

So, I recommend finding a degree program with similar requirements.

And as someone mentioned, check out Bismark because several utilities partner with them.

You can't make it as an operator without initiative.  He has zero.  Then too are his chances of success.

I have look into the nuclear engineering technology, thank you the help and the dis-help and insults to me, I am just trying to find my path of career chose and going to go back to my former plan because I have high level friends in fortune 500 companies, the Department of Energy and US government

If you were thinking, I am not going to be getting a job in the future subcutaneous one
I would recommend trying an English degree first and learn how to spell, use grammar* and form proper sentences. Also, some of us work for Fortune 500 companies (check the list, utilities are on there) and have (ex-Navy) friends in the DoE and "US government". Plus if you can't take this level of sarcasm or jokes, you wouldn't make it in this industry anyways. Go away.
(*Modified for spelling, thanks. Spell check didn't save me this time.)
