Title: Want to come back
Post by: pole 53 on Dec 08, 2010, 09:18
Well after reading about everyone's experience/questions about getting into the life let me tell you mine.  I was a MM2, WCS, ALPO you know all the worker bee stuff.  I got out after six in 2005 and went straight into a cigarette manufacturing job.  It was with a company that made the machines that produced cigarettes actually.  Can you see where this is headed?  When my position was done away with I was used to a certain income.  Without college there are limited options short of trying to get on at a cigarette company itself and I don't really enjoy the industry.

I am trying to turn to the Nuke industry, but like everyone else starting out it is a little overwhelming.  I took a job at North Carolina State University's Nuclear Engineering Program.  I have my Reactor Operator license for the research reactor.  This position is scheduled to end in June 2011.  There is the potential to be extended.  The pay is very low, but I may have the opportunity to continue my education while here.

So this is where I need some input.  I was thinking that with an NRC license in hand I may be more appealing to the industry.  At the same time I don't know.  I did not hear anything from any place other than no when I tried before.  Is that likely to change when I try again in June?  Should I stay and get my degree?  Should I go for a Nuclear BS or Mechanical BS?

Well this is where I am at.  It could be worse.

Go mechanical unless you are dead set on the nuclear industry.  Mechanical is much broader and will afford more opportunities if that is what you want at some point. Just my .02.

I agree.  You can always come work nuclear with a mechanical degree...and an easier 'out' if you want/need it later...

I was told that there is a program for the Navy to work at Naval Reactors after graduating.  I think there is a five year tour for Naval Reactors in DC.  The last two and a half years of college I would earn a salary.  Money coming in while attending college would be good.

Has anyone done or heard of doing that?
