Title: Thomas Edison and OCS
Post by: spu on Nov 06, 2004, 04:26
Hi everyone,
I've been searching the internet for other people's success stories with OCS and a TESC degree, but have not come up with anything.  I know this board has had a few discussions on TESC, but I don't believe any of them answered this.

I am a MM2 SPU at NPTU Ballston Spa.  I do not yet have the TESC degree, but it seems like one of my only options right now. I would like to get picked up for an officer program before I transfer, which will be june, '06.

I am very excited about the supply corps option.  The problem with that is obvious:  The Navy has spent a lot of money training me as a nuke, why should they spend more money to send me to college for something completely different?  A friend of mine applied for STA-21 Supply and got turned down last week.  He said this question was asked at his interview and it caught him off guard.

What I am asking for is ANY advice on the subject, preferably tips on getting picked up officer (sta-21 or ocs) cross community, and everyone's opinion on whether or not a Thomas Edison degree would give me a shot at Supply.

Thank you for your time,
Jorge

P.S. - Please note that I am not disgruntled at all about navy nuclear power, and I hope that my desire to pursue other fields is not construed as a hatred of the nnpp. (see posting: http://www.nukeworker.com/forum/index.php/topic,3004.0.html ) I'm twenty years old and every day I get to walk on to a DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY SITE to work in a NUCLEAR power plant.  How many twenty year olds can say that?

I am aware that when the Navy needs Supply Officers, they don't care they are losing enlisted Nukes. It depends on the needs at the time.

Well that gives me hope...kind of  :D
I know what you mean though, this last selection for STA-21 accepted I think 6 out of 60+ people from my command who applied.  Only 2 of those were cross community (Pilot).  I've heard that last year the Navy picked up 2x too many, so they had to basically not pick anyone up this year.  I'm not too sure about that one.

Well, thanks for the reply.  Anyone else have any opinions?

There were roughly 20 of us at the STA 21 briefing today.

Check out Bellevue University.  www.bellevue.edu/info/nuclear

Interviews play a big part of the selection process.  Have a plan for your life and your career and be able to explain it.  Think of answers to questions you might get asked and write them down.  Rehearse your answers just like you are applying for a job.  Take the lead and ownership for your package.  Make sure it is perfect.  Who would you pick to be an officer, someone submitted you a pristine piece of work or one that is less than perfect.  Compettition is tough.  It is the little things that make the difference.

Thanks for the advice.  I am trying to get in touch with current supply officers to get some insight into what exactly they do and what traits make a candidate desirable.  If anyone has any contacts, that would be great.

Are you at Ballston Spa?  If so, my statement about only 6 people being picked up was based on rumor, which is all I have to go by considering the STA-21 website will only let those who applied this year to look at the results.   Do you have access to the results?  If so, are you able to see about how many people actually got picked up this year for supply or corps?

thanks-
Jorge

Yes I am at Ballston Spa. I'm MARF/4. I qualified a couple of weeks ago, my class graduates in two weeks. I was picked up to be a SPU, but they took it away because of STA 21 results released a week after SPU results. I'll be hangin around until I leave for NSI in FEB.
FY 05 Selection board results: http://www.bupers.navy.mil/navadmin/nav04/nav04249.txt
There is no way to tell how many were enlisted nukes.
You can look at any NAVADMIN here: http://www.bupers.navy.mil/navadmin/navad04.html

Thanks for the links and congrats on qualifying.  Are they going to let you stand your qualified watches w/out students or will you just be standing security watches and things like that?

I think I'll just be hanging out. Right now there is a restriction on qualified students standing watch, so I'll live the life of a qualified student for the time.
