WRDW: USC Aiken Campus announces new engineering degree available
March 2, 2016

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/ WAGT) -- University of South Carolina Aiken announces an engineering degree available for students with the help of a $550, 000 donation from Savannah River Nuclear Solutions.

This major was reflective of the demands in the area. After a year process of meetings between ten to 12 Engineers and USC Aiken, the major was officially developed and announced with promises from local companies to hire on engineers after completion of the program.

200 pre-engineering students will participate in the Industrial Process Engineering Initiative. Students enrolled in the engineering major will begin next fall in 2016.

CEO of SRNS Carol Johnson, says she's excited that the money donated will help go toward developing the program. She adds that students will be able to be near their family and that's important, especially as a student.

It will be a 129 credit program with requirements of Math, Science and Management.

The University is currently in the process of looking for an Endowed Chair to oversee and teach the major. They are hoping for someone on the Mechanical or Industrial Engineer side. Chancellor of USC Aiken Sandra J. Jordan adds the University will conduct a National and International search for the position and have already started the process.
