Title: Getting hired as an AO, and shift work question...
Post by: josrya89 on Mar 02, 2019, 07:51
Hi All,

I recently applied for an AO position. I have 7 years in the USAF as an electrical power production specialist (3E0X2), have an Associates in Electrical/Mechanical Technology, and 9 credits from an EET degree. I have no nuke experience, other than nuke weapons security. What are my chances of getting the position. I've applied for AO and NRO positions before and have never heard anything, any advice on how to make my name stick out?

Also, the posting says 12 hour shift work. Is there a commonly used shift schedule/rotation. Ive worked 12's most my adult life and have no problem, I'd just like to know what the typical day on day off schedule is like. I have worked Panama 12s and I love that schedule, is that what is used in the nuke field?

Thanks for any info!

I work in Ops at a plant. We have a 5 week rotation with a 7 day off at one point. I will pick a random spot to start:

We work Mon-Weds days and then off Thurs through the following Weds.
We then come in for nights Thurs-Sun and off Mon-Weds.
Work Thurs-Sun days and off on Mon (shitty part of the schedule)
We have training Tues-Friday (9 hour days). Off Sat & Sun.
Work Mon-Weds nights and off Thursday-Sunday and back to Mon-Weds days.

I don't know what other plants work. When I was at Turkey Point we worked 8 hour shifts.

My random start point is usually the 3 nights, so I had to read this a couple times. I have the same schedule at North Anna, but training days are only 8 hours.

I know a couple Exelon plants do 8 hour shifts, with 12 hours on the weekend (adds 4 hours to days and nights, swing shift gets the weekend off), but I don't remember the actual schedule.

The exception will be refueling outages when you'll probably work the same 12-hour shifts, 4 on, 1 off (or something similar), for 3-5 weeks
