Title: Question for those through schooling about vehicles
Post by: DarkMesa8 on Mar 22, 2006, 05:55
For those who finished the pipeline in SC, I have questions about vehicles at the school.

For one, did they allow personal vehicles?

If so, those who had them, was it an unecessary distraction being able to drive somewhere on weekends?

For those who didn't, do you wish you did, or glad you didn't have it there?

Mine won't be worth selling, even though I really won't need it for years.  I can have it taken care of if I won't use it, but I'm trying to plan ahead a little.

You are allowed to have POV's at NNPTC, however, you aren't allowed to drive them while on Phase 1 NMT  (the 1st 4 weeks).  A car really isn't a necessity until you begin prototype, but you'll have to rely on taxis or friends to get you where you need to go, or just to town for fun.  I bought a car at the beginning of power school, and dont regret it, it was a big relief to go where I wanted when I wanted without being an inconvience or having to pay for rides.

Thanks.  I wouldn't be able to fly and get it until after Nuclear A school though when I have leave.

Others with opinions?

Although I went through the program in Orlando, I had a car and I was glad I had it.  Just about everyone had one, but the rules were different then.

I bought a car while at NPS. When I got to my first command at Norfolk, I rented a storage garage to keep my car in and bought a small motorcycle to putter around the base-the car stayed nice and it lasted me through college after I got out. I was on a fast attack, so other then driving it home every 12 to 18 months, I did not get a chance to put too many miles on it...fast and black and never comes back rang true for me...

I'm going through Power School right now, and a vehicle would be very nice at this point.

During "A" School I didn't miss being able to go where I wanted when I wanted too much, but "A" School is short, and you're ignorant when you're there.  Power School is much more difficult (more interesting, yes.) and I don't have a car right now.  It sucks on the days where it is amazing outside and I'd like nothing more then to just run off to the beach and relax for a few hours before coming back to reality to realize that I can't get there by myself.

There will be people that you will know with cars, but if you like the idea of being able to do as you please I'd suggest getting a car.  I'm looking for one right now -- It is my favorite thing to do on the weekend because cars and insurance are outrageous down here.

I'm sorry if my post is random, I *just* got out of the building from studying so my damage may still be brained.

In short -- You'll want a car for NPS, and you'll need one for Prototype.

I killed my first deer where the new power school is in 1989. That being said. Do you really want to sit next to a bowling alley and middle school without an escape? In Orlando I had a car, and it was a blessing. I never paid for gas, beer, or tickets to disney. It was a great time. Or, sit and stare at the bowling alley. Just my two cents.
