The Firewatches are GREAT!  Learned how to Line-Dance at the North 40.  Made to the Liquor Store on I-40 in 10 minutes!  Got married and divorced.  Learned what "spottin" for deer is all about. Learned alot about Hot-Particles.  Learned what a compassionate person Stan was.  Wow did he really know how to communicate with people.  ANO....the only place to get a G/A open-window beta reading anywhere in U1 Rx basement.  What a claim to fame!  Stan...Hats off to you and your people skills!

I did three tours at ANO,, If I remember right there was a place called Skull Orchard across the lake from the plant,, gawdddd that always turned into a mess, but then again most of the 80's have slipped my mind... I guess three things I can say good about ANO is 1. I met my wife there ( and hell NO not at the north 40) 2. I learned to Turkey hunt  3. I met a hell of alot of good people there, I guess it's not hard to meet good people when you have a SC like Butch Byrd

Aaaahhhhh......Skull Orchard. Me and Tarbox are card carryin' members of that fine tradition, along with quite a few others on this site I would venture to guess. As I racall, the local girls in the "Chicken Coop" made life infinitely more bearable on night shift, though the fire watches weren't too bad either. The people were great! Strawberry Layman, Tim Tarbox, Wayne Mandrell (He was in security back then), Burt Lynch, Jim Looper, Butch, Stan, .... the list goes on and on. It's one of the few plants I ever worked where I would have liked to go House. As a matter of fact, I'm housin' it now at P.I. but ya never know. They lookin' for any ALARA Planners?

Grave-top Golf! Fourrrrrr! Skull Orchard was also host to these other fine culturally enriching events:

The "How much Jose can you chug before you go blind" contest (Reigning champ last I checked was Adrian Lucie).

Monster Truck Bumper Pull

Greko Roman Wrestling.....shirtless....on gravel.

Carry your girl to the tree in the lake.....and leave her there.

The "I can prove these shoes are fire-proof..." contest.

"Kill Blaine's car with a survival knife"

"Technocolor Yawn for distance"

These events only scratch the surface of the culturally enlightening which occured at The Skull.
If you can remember any others, ad to the list. Unfortunately for me, if it didn't happen in the first hour or so, it has been lost forever in an alcoholic haze.

ANO what can one say! Worked a refueling outage at unit 2 back in the 80's. By the time the outage was over, I was well on my way to becoming an alcoholic. Knowing that Russelville is a so-called dry county, you get the big picture. Thanks to all my drinking buddies, we made it thru that outage.

p.s. And I thought Oyster Creek was the pits, radiologically speaking.

I just left ANO last month. I found a vast improvement over outages I'd worked there in the past. The house techs treated us well and management was not looking to fire someone at the drop of hat. All in all I had a good time. Too bad Entergy is trying to redefine the word cheap. I think their people deserve better.

As far the outage goes it is a total circus ( keeping it politically correct LOL) from no communication between work groups and so called work planners, to vastly underestimating the total rem exposure, then when we blew that goal we regroup to a higher number but still over shoot that goal !! and from people covering up accidents that they said didn't happen....wink wink.  this used to be a fun place to work back in the late 80's to early 90's but the culture has vastly changed since then. oh then we also had way more  OSHA recordable incidents then I would say is acceptable and those are only the ones they will admit to. oh then we have so called craft supervision (this also includes the decon supervision) that think they are bigger then the total picture and have forgotten where they statrted from. well enough of my rant all i can say is stay away.

I was down for the sgrp and head change out. as for my feelings about the plant i felt there was quite a bit of disorganization. jobs were planned, set up then never performed even though such jobs would have save overall outage dose. also some things were not disclosed about several incidents that occured there during the outage. interaction between work groups i would rate 3-4. plant readiness in terms of jobs ready to be performed 1-3. experince of personnel 4. overall job satisfaction -5. chances of most ppl returning.......3

What is the pay and schedule for auxiliary operator at ANO?

I would imagine you'll start somewhere between 22 and 25 per hour and the schedule is a 35 day repeating cycle with a 7 consecutive days off stretch in it. You'll never work more than four in a row except for outages.

I am only guessing at what I said. I went by Waterford's numbers. Theyre probably pretty similar to ANO.

Hello,  I am trying to get into the Nuke industry in the Arkansas Nuke 1 plant.  I have a BS in Anthropology and various work experience in manufacturing and maintenance.  Recently I filled out an application for Nuclear Plant Operator.  The job would be very good for me and my household.  What can I expect upon entering into the industry?  Do I need to get some specialized knowledge before, or right after, highering on?

Currently I am looking through various topics here, this being my first post, to fill in the gaps of my understanding.  I look forward to any response I get and hope they generate more questions I can ask here or elsewhere.

Thanks,
Karl

Karl,

Anthropology, that is a BA correct? I hope you have had some classes in math, physics, chemistry to go with the degree.  If not you may not make it to an interview.  I am not saying this to be mean but to let you know what you are up against.

I worked in Operations at ANO for almost 15 years, if you make it through the selection process and get a job offer they have a very good training program.

To prepare for the process you should take some practice POSS tests.  Progress Energy has a link and access to practice tests http://www.progress-energy.com/aboutus/employment/eei/index.asp

You can look at PWR generic fundamentals questions (ANO used to give an old generic fundamentals exam during the interview process not as a go not go but just to see what base level of knowledge you have)  on the NRC website http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/operator-licensing/generic-fundamentals-examinations/pwr.html

Finally brush up on behavioral interviewing techniques and questions.  Try and use personal examples in all your questions not just well I would do this.. actually talk about a situation and how you handled the issue.

Feel free to email me if you want more information on ANO or Russellville.

Good luck, spent 15 years there.  It is a great place to work and full of some good people.

Tips?

Be yourself, do not blow smoke, expect to interview with a panel of Operators not a 1 on 1 interview, should have non-licensed through senior reactor operators on the panel.

Use real life examples to answer their questions, it is ok to use non work related examples if they are relavant to the question such as how you managed a youth softball team ect.

they are (as all sites) big on procedure use and adherence (always use em and never violate them), and safety.

.......and be thinking about what questions you want to ask them.

There are a couple of internet sites that list somethings you should and shouldn't ask in an interview.

The thing is, after your interview they ask you if you have any questions.

Have some questions, show them you are prepared, that you have put some thought into your potential postion, that you are a prepared and organized person.

It can't hurt you, it might be just what they are looking for. 8)

So just finished my interview, thought it went well guess i'll know more in a week or two about the position.  For all those taking the poss exam some things you'll need to know is on the Mathmatical concepts and the Tables and Graphs sections just do the best you can.  In a testing group of 22 no one finished these sections that I met and if there are any questions that slow you down pass them for the ones that dont.  You'll probably not finish the test so complete all that you can in the short time available.  It is a pass/fail case based on cutoff criteria that the plant your applying for gives the test grading company.

Good luck to all

I see that ANO was getting ready to go into an outage in March 2010, so if I've read information on this site correctly there should be one this fall and that would bring about new NLO and SRO classes. I plan to be on terminal from the Navy at the beginning of November and I would really like to work at ANO (I'm from Arkansas). Can anyone there let me know when the next NLO or SRO classes will start? Thanks in advance for your help.

This is a shame I will keep the employees and families in my thoughts.

As an aside how come the news keeps calling it the "Arkansas NUMBER one plant" can't they even get the name right? To me it is disrespectful to the injured workers and the deceased's family that the reporters and editors can't even bother to get the name of the plant right.

A lot of people have pics of that incident.  My advice is to keep them off this site.  Entergy should have some control over what information they release to the public and when.  The possibility - however remote - that someone might post an altered photo here, or that even an unaltered photo could be subject to misinterpretation, could be damaging to Entergy, to NukeWorker, and to other interested and affected parties.
I know we all want to learn from this, but the best time to learn is when the lesson is completely written and fully understood.  I'm guessing that Entergy would probably ask Mike to take down any pictures that get posted here, just as DC Cook did when their turbine wrecked.

Why were they using the temporary crane instead of the house crane?

Our house Trb Bdlg Crane wouldn't support that weight either.  So we would have to use a Temp Crane as well.

Most house cranes would not be anywhere close to supporting 500 tons.  That's why I believe they used a Temp Crane setup.

The "Bigge" crane is used as implied to handle the excess weight that most in plant cranes can not.  I assume this setup was also used recently at one of the Duke plants for a similar job without issue.  They have also used these cranes for most SGRP's that I am aware of without incident with the exception of I thought I head something about a SG being dropped outside the equipment hatch at Salem (I think).

Point being these people are very experienced with heavy lifts so I would expect some type of equipment failure is associated.

certainly a tragedy

I'm currently working toward my BS in Chemistry (eventually MS...just taking a while to get there) because ANO is where I want to work. Is this the right degree path? The advisors at UALR weren't very helpful, kinda looked at me like I was mad when I explained what I wanted.

Seems like a point-by-point on how not to accomplish a major evolution.  Bottom line appears to be that this tragedy was 100% avoidable, which is probably what the vast majority of us had already decided on our own.
