Title: Navy ELT out for almost a year!
Post by: Lip2303 on May 08, 2009, 03:43
I was a sub ELT in for just short of 4 years and got out on an admin sep. honorable. I have just sent out my resume to some places and was just wanting a little bit of advice.

From reading previous posts I see that being out for less than a year should not be much of a problem. I was discharged honorably so that should not be a problem as well. My real question is this: I have been contacted by 3 headhunting companies currently. Do these companies really work or should I just attempt to apply for jobs myself at plants and such. I posted my resume on this site and on monster. I am willing to relocate anywhere in the US for a job. I appreciate any input you guys have. Thanks.

Also, what is a rough estimate of yearly salary for a RCT or something along the ELT lines?

Job search here - skills - Chemistry, Mechanic, Maintenance, Health Physics, Radiation Protection, etc.
Your time in the Nav may not make you a Sr. RP - do a quick search for Jerry Hiatt's article on what counts for RP time on this site. You went through MM A school, so you should at least be entry level for a mechanic. ELT also provides training for Chem tech, again, your limited time may only make you entry level.
Also search the utility websites - that is where many of the utilities hire - I have no experience with headhunters.
Good luck, hope things work out.  :)

My experience with headhunters was they mostly do not get used for maintenance and operations positions at nuclear utilities.  I know that my utility doesn't use them for those positions, though they will for HR and administrative positions.  When I was getting out 5 years ago, I used Orion etc and went to several job fairs.  The companies present were a beer bottling company out of Atlanta, a paper mill, Wal-mart, a biochemical plant... Things like that.

What I did was to get a list of every nuclear plant in the country (www.nrc.gov) and find out their websites, or the sites they used for hiring. (IE, Wolf Creek at that time didn't post on their home site, but rather on Kansasjoblinks.com)  Then , I set up a rotation where about every 2 weeks I would have cycled through every web site, and kept a kind of ledger of what resumes and cover letters I had submitted, watching for when the postings were closed, and a log of all phone calls I made, and any other contact.

Now, one of those head hunters did turn me on to Westinghouse outage support group, out of PA, which was prob the closest to a nuclear facility that I came to. Lots of travel with that job, though.

Best of luck with your search!

Bill

Back in 2000 I was hired into Ops after being out of nukes for 5 years. My background was ELT and 11 years road tech. I originally applied for a house HP position but the utility put a hold on hiring in HP. My resume was sent to Ops and I got called in to take the POSS. I have been here in Ops ever since. They needed operators then. Calvert again needs a lot of operatos as I'm sure a lot of other plants do also due to the new NRC manning requirements. Good luck with your search

So I finally recieved a reply from Eberline Hanford Services Inc. It is for a RCT job in Hanford, WA. I have a phone interview and such next week. Just curious if anyone is in that area now and if so how is the cost of living? Things to do there? Company good to work for? Thanks again for any responses...

Well,
did ya' take the job ?  One good thing if you take the job at Eberline is you can slide over to one the other groups on site after two years if ya' don't like digging dirt.  :)

Yeah I took the job and am about to take my comp/DoE core. So far so good with the job and area, but I havent been out in the field yet so no clue how that will be. I thought about doing that (LAMP right?) eventually or perhaps moving to another job somewhere in the US. Will all depend on my better half and what she wants probably...

Well Good luck!..yea it is the lamp, but you are "stuck" on that side for 2 years. That is unless you really piss them off and then they will let you go sooner  ;D 562 on the seniority list as of today with 34 contractors. Another 30 + goes into training probably late sept.
