I havn't been there in a few years, but it was a good place to work at. The house people would always work with you anf the support people always gave you a hand.
I heard that it's changed some, with the new management...just have to waite and see ???
-
Was there '92 / '94 - always stayed at Port Paradise - 3 bars - no waiting.
Remember some tech chewing mints as we escorted the RCP Impeller around outside so that nobody could smell his breath.
Nice folks, great area.

i heard that cr3 is getting a new head dellivered this summer (03) for installation during the next outage. when is the next outage scheduled?
-
SloGlo,
It is scheduled to run from Oct 4 to Oct 31. I'll be there! Can we count you in? It'll be good to see you again! [smiley=beerchug.gif]
JJ
-
The Head is going to be on site sometime late this summer.
Should be a fairly good outage, unfortunely it will be right in the middle of the fall outage season.
Hope to see ya'all there!
-
jjordan... i dunno. i really don't want to travel during my daughter's senior year in high school. too many movies with that plot.... but it sounds interesting, specially being able to watch you suffle bundles around. ::)
-
SloGlo,
It's only for a month, she'll never even know your gone. It has been said that it's a bit more interesting with me moving fuel, but you'll just have to see for yourself! It'll still be warm there in Oct, I'll even get you a little Ice Cream! ;)

jjordan..... that's enuff of the sweet talk, 'k?

How's the new RPM working out at CR?
-
Nice guy but INPO to the core. Hope he don't get pancaked during the refuel
-
I have been here a year and have had my doubts at times.
Overall the people are nice but have some problems adapting to change. :-/ Given a choice I would have perferred a REAL INPO 1 plant.
In Crystal River, you are either part of the gene pool or part of the food chain.
MetêRion Le Béte Noir!
-
HEY DAYWORK,
CAN YOU SAY MORE? FIRST TIMER THERE AND I LIKE TO KNOW THE INS AND OUTS...
-
All I will say is it is a different company since CPL took over. Production is first.
INPO RPM = trouble
-
Wasn't bad, wasn't great either considering it was my first. Met some cool people though. Just one phrase sums up my entire experience there, NO MORE POWER VISORS!!!!!!!!!!!
Guess what I got to do all outage lol. ;D
-
It was a VERY interesting outage.Hard to believe they have done it 12 times before, as this was less organized than some of the first outages in the 70's.HP site coordinator quit because of problems with the new RPM. Fortunately I never had the opportunity to meet Mr. NEW RPM. so I was able to escape with part of my sanity and a little pride.
On the positive side I lost 10 pounds during the outage due to heat and CR3's new paper anti-Cs. Definitely not a user friendly site. Having worked there before it is now in the list of " been there don't want to go back again plants.
-
Did the project come in on time? Just curious.

Progress Energy runs it now? How does it compare between now and before they stepped in?
-
Crystal River was the first plant I worked after Uncle Sams Canoe Club. That was before FFD. At the time if you came thru the gate straight, on time, not holding, and made a reasonable attempt to do your job, you were considered a "Super-Tech" We were supposed to be working 3-10 hr shifts, but the house lead always let us go early when the oncoming shift arrived and beat us to the end of the access road for the "one for the road" beer tailgate held at the end of each shift. We had a rotational list of whose turn it was to bring the beer. I got to sample so many kinds/brands cause we all tried to bring something someone else hadn't.
There once was a nuclear protest group at our tailgate spot. We found out why they protested there---you couldn't drive to an oil slick, and most of the guys were there cause most of the girls were T-shirt/braless. I think a bunch of them became nukes after they talked to us.
-
Heard there were LHRA violations and INPO had a field day. House Puke, didn't he work with you at Calvert?
-
Yep, he worked at Calvert as a Health Physicist, Assistant General Supervisor and then on to INPO.
Initially we did not get along well at all. We eventually reached an understanding and by the time he left for Crystal River we got along fairly well.
I don't know what the issues are at CR, but I wish you the best of luck.
I hear they are looking for a new HP Supervisor. True?
-
If anyone has a favorite hang out, place to shop, or local information for this area please post it here.
-
Do your yourself a favor and go to the Rainbow River, I promise you that once you jump in the cool, crisp, clear water of this river your life will change for the better.
This area, Homassas Springs and a few other isolated spots, are what Florida used to be like. Believe it or not (forget Ripley's) we took our children on a vacation a few years back and never once visited a theme park and we spent a wonderful week seeing FLORIDA.
-
So what going no there now...just want to know?
should I go back there?
-
yep he is still there.. so when is your report date.. ill call him up and let him know u are coming .. NOT!!! you'll never eat ham in this industry again!!!
-
I talked with some of the guys at CR#3 today, some have been offered( if your 50 they will give you 5 years to equal 55 and 5 years pay to retire)
I hope the guys remember the last time offers were made, The first offer is allways the best, after that you are on your own!!!
the best of all things to all of them!!!
-
The contract for HPs will be with one of the Bartlett companies
and if it is like the last outage the pay will probably be $18.00 and $80.00 P/D
-
Does anyone have a contact number for HR at CR3 or Progress Corp?
Someone from Progress left me a message, and after playing it back 9 times I still can't make out the number.
R/ Sponge
-
Jess,
There's always plenty of Ice Cream! Especially for you! I am on the refueling team, and Framatome has the current contract. We will be doing the refueling ouselves, but we staff in a few technical experts to assist us. I think we are bringing in 6 from Framatome, and 6 from Master Lee. It's a B&W plant so I'd bet Framatome is doing the generators as well, but I'll try to verify this. 8) Who all wants to come????

wonder what ever happened to linda libertory? :P

I've been trying to find out who holds the laborer contract for Crystal River. Any information is helpful. Thanks!

Labor's are hired throught the company...Progress Energy at the Crystal River office complex...Lot's of LUCK!....
P.S. be ready to work for what they pay you!

I don't mind working, as long as I get a paycheck, lol. Especially around Christmas time. :) Take care, and thanks a bunch!

If you dont mind a little bit longer drive, there are two hotels in dunnellon, The Dinner Bell being the better of the two. Mention youre working at the plant and theyll most likely give a discount. Across the street is the anglers resort. I have no first hand knowledge of that one. There is another in town which most likely you'd have to google that does have efficiencies...if you take the way back machine it was a dive but now that its under new management its been remodeled, from what Ive heard its a bit more expensive. Dunnellon is almost a straight shot to the access road if you stay on the right side of town, which is the only place to stay considering that is where the hotels are located. If anyone has any questions feel free to PM...thats the area i grew up in scarry enough!
-
Lorrie,
I emailed you with the rental agent of the condos I stayed at last outage at CR.
It was a great place for the money. I hope you got the info.
Be careful at work.

Anyone heard anything about the SGR? pay, diem, hours???
-
SGR in 2009. B&W generators. ;D
-
Anyone know the ins and outs for the Fall 07 outage???
-
theres a campground off of dunnellon rd near the plant i cant remember the name of it for the life of me...im out here visiting family if i make it that way ill look it up. If you dont mind a bit of a drive to the plant dunnellon may be a cheaper alternative to actually staying in CR. There are many hotels in CR itself but many cater more to tourist. Dunnellon has the dinner bell which has a restraunt on site (skeets bar b que). Last time i stayed there got a rate of 260 a wk.

Thanks for the info JessJen. I found a campground in Homosassa (Nature's resort) that is very nice. ~15 miles to CR-3. Couple of nice bars just o/s the campground are Margaritagrill and Seagrass pub. Little bit of everything off the Rt 19, Walmart, Winn Dixie, Walgreens, Publix, and an assortment of fast food and misc restaurants. Area Ain't Bad.

RB I luv the new avatar.. :)

Thank you Marlin, I rather like it myself.

Margaritagrille is my favorite. Excellent food (reasonable) and the $3.00 Margarittas (med) can't be beat!
JJ :P
-
Try the Wine And Cheese Restaurant for dinner and the crawldaddy's for happy hour. (wings and oysters) If your lucky you might catch a glimpse of me in December. Drive slow when you coming in the city limits of CR on 19 on the north side (by the mall). If you want any info drop me a message.
-
I would love to get a glimpse of you BB.
I've had lunch at Cracker's a few times, excellent and the service was good and quick. Cody's after work is good too. But the Margarittagrill is close to the trailer and the margaritta's are good and inexpensive. Food ain't bad either. Homosassa springs is beautiful and I did get to see a manatee last weekend while we were snorkeling. I plan on doing some diving this weekend.

Are they stffing down there yet???? I wanna go...

Are they stffing down there yet???? I wanna go...
Some of the craft started on Tuesday. Outage starts Nov 3rd.
-
All they gotta do is call me and Ill take the master bedroom
-
Been there experienced that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
hmm if u didnt get along with the CR3 crew you must have some problems
-
I've never been there, but I have worked with the RPM previously. Without violating the forum rules, what's the problem / issues?
-
yea the working crew tends to provide adequate insulation between the rpm and the meter swinging RAT. that crew is very experienced in dealing with the rpm flavor of the week... so sounds sorta personal what ever the issues
-
Guess Ill find out first hand... got the cll today and Ima heading south ;)
-
LaFeet... good luck. I was there during their last outage and had a great time. The house techs were wonderful and you couldn't ask for better roadies. I found my first particle and you would have thought I struck gold... yeah, I'm such a junior!!! But, I met some really awesome people and I can take that with me anywhere I go.
Have fun!!!!
Lorrie ;D
-
I'm at Crystal River now, hate it!!!!! I was here two years ago too, and enjoyed the outage. The only way I would want to return again is if I completely loose my memories of the treatment I have received while being here this time. One more straw will break this camel's back. Every morning before work I pray for a positive attitude thru the day. And during the day I try to remember 'Don't let the bastards wear you down'. Lorrie is right, there are wonderful house techs here, I've had to deal with some that are not. So far I have learned to not have a questioning attitude, don't make a decision (for it will be wrong), keep your mouth shut and out of site. Even the shared resources will tell you that 'friends don't let friends work Crystal River'. I've heard several road techs say that they will never be back. I would think that with the steam generator replacement next outage, they would want returnees. But the attitude here seems to be that Crystal is the last outage of the year and everyone wants to come.

davidb68200,
Slow down bro, you are gonna hurt your arm. Being one Bartlett's "10 best" is going to put you in some pretty elite company. Maybe the folks at CR-3 didn't know who they were over-looking?

... AND I WOULD CONSIDER MYSELF AS THE 10 BEST WORKERS THAT BARTLETT HAS, MY WORK ETHIC IS 2ND TO NON, I HAVE A UNBELIEVABLE ATTITUDE AND EVER PALNT I GO TO I GET A GREAT REVIEW.
Considering yourself to be good does not count for anything. How others consider you counts for everything.
-
It looks like we need a new forum, " Top Ten Bartlett workers"
Would that be in their minds or as Roger suggests in the opinion of their coworkers?
As to the plight of those at Crystal River, you get what you pay for and you pay for what you get.
-
How about a "LEGENDS of BARTLETT" calender?
-

I just don't want to wear a bikini in the photo shoot :o Oh wait I'm not at CR3 or a legend, except in my own mind of course ;)

Well said Troja- I had alot more thoughts rushing in than I put down on that post. You're right, you have to earn every bit of it.
How do you think it went back then..................?

I just want to be Mr. April with my picture on the first (in a bikini would be fine) ;-)
Top Ten........the only top ten worth looking at is the first layoff list.
-
remeber the add in the crystal river paper wanting road techs to party? and nair bare?
-
I'm eating my own words here. Don't know why, but I'm thankful that some techs have been in a much better mood. They are easier to talk to when I have to address them and be around. I even got an "atta girl". I still don't ask questions or decide on anything. But I am reconcidering being a returnee in two years. As long as I can work this outage and be treated respectfully, I'll be back. So I'm eating my previous words.
-
I have not been here long, but I seem to be enjoying myself so far. The house people have been great and the only thing I wonder about is how long they might need us.
-
The end of the outage is finally near. The Equipment hatch is scheduled to go on Thursday @ noon...... woohoo......
-
I Dunno... there's still a lotocrap inside... eagerly holding my breath
-
Wow, this was the most screwed up outage I've ever seen, ever. But, the people were nice. I knew from the RPM's opening comments to the HP's (in training week), it was going to be a schedule driven outage. I even saw a co-worker (female) reduced to tears. It only means one thing, more money in my pocket. CR-3 Outages always go over. The SGR should take a year or so. I had a great time snorkeling and fishing on my day off. The area was great. I would go back. Maybe I'll stay near Radbitch next time. Radbitch is one cool Chick.
-
Since I was there just a short time I must reserve my judgement. I did enjoy my stay and the work assigned, just wished I could have been there earlier and/or longer.
Pencil me in for the big SG job guys, Ill show up for the No See Ums (dont n=bother you that much after a few of my beers), Oysters and Shrimp....
-
George, I believe you, (& others), were told every day. "Friends don't let friends work at Crystal River" So you can only say you didn't listen, not you weren't warned.

Hello all, I am new to the site and I am looking for employment at Crystal River Power Plant. I was a nuke MM for 13 years and I now live in Spring Hill. If anyone could give me some info or a point of contact it would be much appreciated. Thank you

What kinda job were you looking for? Mechanical Maint., HP, Operations. I'm not an expert on this subject, since I still work as a traveling HP, but I know of a couple of well qualified HP's that are still waiting for a job opening at Crystal. The thing is, being a union plant, they hire people from their Labor work pool first. You can get a Temporary job in their pool, and then work your way up. Sometimes it take years to do that. I'm not willing to wait around for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Vogtle plant offered the same to me (work pool). I said pack sand. If you like union plants, you gotta pay yo dues brotha man. Maybe thats why I'm still on the road. However, go to the Progress Energy website and look for career opportunities, and do a search. Good Luck, maybe someone else has the inside scoop.
-
You have to look on their web site. www.Progress-energy.com they just had postings for ANAO postions these are the jobs that don't get filled from the union. They may have another posting in 6 months or so.
-
This site is so big I don't know where to begin, regarding info about Crystal River.
I am going for an "in house" interview next week and was wondering where I can go, here or other sites to find the most recent info about Crystal River; The plant, the company, the cost of living, where is the most desirable area to live (rent or buy). Cost of housing, payroll taxes, income taxes, etc.
Admin for this site, can you help me maybe?
Thanks,
Paul
-
Try www.city-data.com
-
You could also try... http://www.nukeworker.com/forum/index.php/board,172.0.html
If you click on the forum tab above, each plant is grouped into it's NRC Region. Crystal River is Region 2. There is a lot of good data there.

Anyone have any info on contractors for welders/fitters for the next outage 09/03/09?
-
Hello,
I just applied to Crystal to be a Technical Trainer: In-Processing, PAT, etc. If that does not work out I saw an Assistant Aux Operator (I'm a former nuke MM1/SS/Instructor etc etc with a few years of commercial experience). I was told by a recruiter that Assistant Aux Operator is a lower position than Aux Operator-C, however the job descriptions and pre-reqs read similarly to me.
Wondering if anyone had any insight to the hierarchy of operations withing Progress Energy NLO ranks? I figure after that the usual RO-SRO-SM applies.
Thanks.
-
Following up I got word that I am going to be rec'd for an interview for Aux Op at Crystal River. As the hiring manager described it to me CR3 starts their guys outside the plant and works them inward and upward. He said you spend about a year in secondary which I assume is the Turbine Plant and the attached Aux Systems (EDGs/Water Plant/Boilers) and then on to Rx Systems. I guess they are also pushing for RO candidates since he was excited about the proposed AP1000s. Me too!
This would also be my first opportunity involving a Union job. I did not wish discuss money matters, but would appeciate any knowledge now of the union pay scale at CR3.
Definitely excited about the possibility of getting back to the beautiful state of FLA!
Peace.
-
take what they offer or you will be on the ghost list.
-
Is that code for 'you only get one shot for being hired, after that you are a pay-no-mind'
-
yep
I will have a room to rent in a fully furnished house for Crystal River Outage. Your own bathroom. Let me know if any interest from anybody. Its in Homosassa.
-
If it's a Union job the offer is going to be the same as it would be for anyone else hired. They will probably lay out the pay scale when they make the job offer to you and since the pay rates are already laid out in the contract you'll know what your hire in pay will be, what the raises will be, and what the criteria for them will be.
You're correct in the secondary side being the turbine side of the plant. Best of luck with the job offer and keep us posted!
Peace, ($1 to Marssim)
Tom

Anyone have any info on contractors for welders/fitters for the next outage 09/03/09?
Outage is 9/26/09.

Sorry to bother you guys, but I had a couple of questions and I thought somebody over here might know the answers.
1. Why is Progress Energy building their new nuclear plants in Levy County instead of at Crystal River? I would think it would be a lot cheaper.
2. I noticed the license on Crystal River 3 expires in 2016. Is anybody doing anything about getting a 20 year license extension? I noticed a lot of other plants have already got extensions.

Thanks HydroDave63!
-
Joel I think it is because of space. In addition to unit 3 they have units 1,2,4, and 5...
-
Part of it may also be transmission lines - again - related to the 4 coal units out there. I think that Levy Cty also tried harder to get them - maybe tax advantages.
I got this info from my folks, they live about 10 miles from the plant - they try to keep me posted with what the residents get for info.
That area is a nice area, and could sure use the industry (or course, Everywhere could use the industry....)
-
I'm kind of curious since Wikipedia lists Crystal River at 4700 acres and I looked at the aerial and it doesn't look crowded.
Go to http://www.bing.com/maps (http://www.bing.com/maps)
and enter
28.95833, -82.6986
Then click on Bird's Eye. It looks like there is plenty of space there to me. I assume that is Crystal River 1&2 next to #3. You have pan north to see the other two coal plants with the cooling towers.
Progress says they are going to shut down Crystal River 1&2 after they open Levy County.
I hope they are getting one heck of a tax break. Progress has budgeted 3 billion just for putting in the high tension lines to Levy County.
At least Progress won't be the first customer for an AP1000 Reactor. Westinghouse is building the first one now in China. China is planning on having 100 AP1000 Reactors built or under construction by 2020.
-
Im going to be at crystal river this fall for junior deconner. anyone else going?....what job are you going to be doing?
-
I am on the list with the Local 75 carpenters union for the SGR. Haven't heard anything yet.
-
New plants just got approved by the state...
reason for Levi Co. suite is water coolant to the gulf...Crystal River suite has 4 coalfired plants and the nuke...can only put out 80ish temp water...discharge will be 10 miles away

Lots of rumors about CR. However the big question from here is " Was this thing planned ? "
We are trying our best, but it does not seem to be good enough. Way to many Larry the Cable Guys at the controls.
-
Any truth to the rumor that CR broke the BRT while cutting thrugh the concrete in support of the SGRO? Sounds like they did not detension enough tendons!
I hear that CTMT had issues at construction and was repaired. Flawed detensioning produced bad crack last week at site of former repair, and now they have a real problem. 5-7 month outage ahead to detension all tendons to repair CTMT. Yikes.

NRC Event Notification.
DISCOVERY OF A CONTAINMENT SEPARATION
"Crystal River Unit 3 is currently shutdown for a planned refueling and steam generator replacement outage. During containment building concrete removal activities to create a construction opening to support steam generator replacement, a separation in the concrete was discovered in the vicinity of the construction opening near the periphery of the containment. The Crystal River Unit 3 containment is a steel lined, post tensioned concrete structure nominally 42 inches thick. Post tensioning is achieved utilizing an outer array of horizontal tendons immediately adjacent to an inner array of vertical tendons. The separation is generally in the plane of the horizontal tendons. Inside the separation is 30 inches of concrete and the steel liner plate. This condition has been evaluated relative to current plant conditions and found to represent no degradation in safety. Crystal River Unit 3 personnel in conjunction with industry experts are currently performing a detailed analysis of this separation to determine the cause, extent of condition, the impact on the containment building function and any required repairs prior to plant restart. Operating experience reports are being prepared to share our information with the industry. The station will provide updates as we gain more information concerning this issue."
The licensee notified the NRC Resident Inspector.

I've never so much as looked at the Nuke side of the plant, but I was there for the first half of the year working on Units 4&5. They were doing the clean air mod and I was part of the startup testing group. My overall impressions of Crystal River were really good. I enjoyed much of the area, Homosassa being one of my favorite areas. Met alot of really great people and have many new friends down there. Couldn't find a decent Mexican resturaunt to save my life, but I'm from the SW originally, so I'm picky about that. Lots of great seafood places, alot of neat things to see and do. The people were very friendly. I'd recommend a place called Cattledog's if anyone is heading that way. It's a coffee shop that recently opened, but the owner is also a professional chef, so they have a good selection of really great food.
As far as the site, my interactions with actual Progress employees were fairly limited, since I was predominately working with the construction guys as a commissioner. I'd have to say that I'm about 50-50 on them though. Met some really good people there, and also met some guys that wouldn't be able to keep a job if it wasn't for the Unions looking out for the stupid, the unmotivated, and the lazy.
My understanding of the whole Levy county project was that Progress only got permission to start with it after they agreed to make the clean air mods to units 4&5.

took awhile to answer my question, but got the information, Thanks, :)

Do you all listen to all the romors???
Been here for 40 years...and am a contract HP....work at CR-3 foe almost every outage.
Yes they are going to build a new Nuke....yes there was a crack...yes they are under staffed....
Levi suit was the best location as stated...cooling water was the issue
crack was cut out...no others found
would you spent 4 hour in BRT...then have to do routine surveys?

Levi suit was the best location as stated...cooling water was the issue
crack was cut out...no others found
would you spent 4 hour in BRT...then have to do routine surveys?
What? ???

Any update on construction of the Levy County site construction ? I own an RV park near CR plant and want to plan ahead for accommodating Levy crews. Thanks, Jo Hatton, Lake Rousseau RV Park
