Title: Carriers VS fast attack education?
Post by: flare on Mar 31, 2010, 12:20
I"m new and a nuke DEPer I'm sure we all know the story. When it comes to life in and out of the navy, does the educational opportunity of serving aboard a carrier out weigh the additional training and community of the Submarine fleet ( im planing on going fast attack) in regards to after the navy, both being accepted into high level colleges and civilian jobs? money isnt a big issue I'll always have the G.I.bill and NTOTC but i'd like your guys input

After you have thouroughly searched and reviewed the forums, if you have any specific questions, come back and ask them and we will be more than happy to answer them. Good luck, and have a nice day  ;D
P.S. - Always choose the Subs, being on a giant floating target must just suck!  ;)

Subs require more of their people as there is still much to be done but with a much smaller crew. It is hard to pigeon hole someone on the boats to one job area. For example an ELT on a carrier may be relegated to doing just chemistry (primary or secondary) on watch but on the boat you will be standing watch in the engineering spaces and doing primary chemistry, secondary chemistry and any radiological work in addition on your duty days. Another downside is that on the boats you may be assigned to messcooking while you are doing your Basic Engineering Quals and Sub Quals (most are not).

I would still go for a SSN, both of my boats were attack boats, though the SSGNs sound interesting to me as well.

As far as getting an education while in, a carrier would be a better choice you would have more personal time.

Actually, trying to walk around with the biggest gonads known to man getting in the way sucks; comes from the pride of knowing: On the surface, one is always cruising at test depth. 8)

The Falklands war.   In particular "The nuclear-powered submarine HMS Conqueror sank the Belgrano on 2 May."

Yup Conqueror vs. Belgrano (Ex-USS Phoenix launched in 1938, and was at Pearl durring the attack). Conqueror sank Belgrano with 2 straight runner Mk8 Mod 4 torpedos. An old target, wholloped by an old torpedo.

Not to threadjack or anything, but here she is, lookin' rough... notice the "modified" bow.

If you want to be a sneaky eavedropping pirate viking raider....... go subs. If you want to lurk in a dark dungeon of doom with a crew of half ogres most of whom you don't know....go to a carrier.

I'm pretty sure that was due to artificial food additives, unmonitored exposure to industrial solvents and HAZMAT and substantial rad exposure. ;)
