Title: Outage Teeshirts
Post by: Gonzo on Sep 29, 2006, 11:32
I can remember when an outage used to last so long that you'd have several, all inspired by outage events....    I sure miss those days...

You don't good see 'T' shirts anymore because the good one's are outlawed by the utility.

Remember the Leprechaun with the shillelagh turning the fuel pool green at Palo Verde? (From the infamous St. Paddy's Day turnin of the green episode.) Wear it and you were fired.

My Favorite one was at SONGS the ALARA "As Long As Room's Available" T-shirt depicting the RPM on a Bulldozer pushing Techs into containment. (Also Banned)

                      8)  My favorite was the DFR  T's at Turkey Point in 1981... Where the words were spelled out and the road was going through the UC (in the F word)...
Back then you were allowed to wear them at work.Damn times have changed(too many sensitive people)... :-\

I've had two favorites, the first from the Navy that had a skull and cross bones with a mushroom cloud behind it that read Nuclear Power today's Energy working on you tomorrow. This T-shirt was a little like a rock song, the lyrics didn't mean much to me but the reaction from Newport News shipyard and the Navy command was immeadite bannishment. We would wear them under our uniform shirt as a form of rebellion. This was the 70s after all.
The second shirt is one from the Pilgrim recirc pipe replacement that had a drawing of the drywell with people depicted more like dead end kids than Rad workers. It was very creative and comically drawn, if I can find it I will take a picture and post it.

.....1987, Farley....prior to 10CFR26...or the drug test...a surprise test on the whole plant......the T-shirt had a question mark on the front  that said,,"Guess What"...on the back it had a restroom door with a sream of urine coming out to a desk with a bottle on it,,,and the caption said,,,"I PISSED AND PASSED".....Arlen Otto most probably was the designer..also "Plantation Farley"...also Gary Lewallen, at Catawba,,late 80's designed the .."Hide and seek, for a Grand a week"..

The best of all time had to be 'You can't hold a candle to Browns Ferry' very shortly after the fire. Banned immediately.

Runner up was the 'Peach Bottom... Aw S#!T' with the mushroom cloud coming out of the top of the Reactor Building.

Honorable mention: the classic 'Migrant Nuclear Worker' with the names of all (well, most) of the plants on it. The second generation shirt had Indian Point in the armpit.

Okay I hate to admit that 1. I am this old and 2. I was wild in my day...

I once wore an outage shirt my dad got for me to meet Henry's family, it was in 1979 and I remember it had two pigs on it making bacon. Of course I did not realize this until several days after the meeting of the parents and family. They really must have thought I was white trash. LOL

I remember the "Luders" shirts from Turkey Pt, the Triplets shirt and there was one from CY about a car wreck...

My two favorites are:

Duane Arnold in 80 with the strongback pulling an ear of corn out of the vessel

Later at ANO with a milk carton having a picture of the missing crane hook on the side of it. (that one got the artist an interview with the RPM!)

You hit the nail on the head roadhard. Do you remember the "you can't hold a candle to Browns Ferry"?
Some sites have gone so far as to ban T-Shirts not put out by the employee commitee for PC correct outage themes and profit for the house party funds.
With the reduction of actual wages/benefits for contractors by the powers that be, I'll be damned if I'll contribrute to their mindset. (And yes I've been told I'm not allowed to wear that here.)

Part of the reason outage T-shirts are almost extinct is that utilities got tired of employees wasting company time selling shirts on-site...and there isn't enough profit margin (or interest in the shirts) to make money selling them off-site.  (At most plants anyway...I know there's still an individual who sits by the road in Avila at some of the Diablo outages...)

Yes, it was. I forgot that he had been there during that time. I still remember looking down while talking and seeing those pigs. I could have went through the floor. But bless my motherinlaws heart, she either never noticed or was too much of lady to say a thing. LOL

the best outage tshirts are the ones the company will make you take off!  ned designed one once that had "grand gulf nuclear circus" over the pocket and some pretty funny stuff on the back.  within 1 hour the rpm announced anyone caught wearing it would be escorted off site.  house tech or contractor.  (still got mine!)

No I didn't but I would be honored if you sent one my way. I have a son in this business and a daughter who is publishing but loves outage shirts; alas all of Henry and my shirts went to these two and our other daughter years ago and are forever lost.

Yes the days of yore at TP and were some of the best, I miss those times on the road as it is not the same now.

I bet ya could sell some of those shirts on nukeworker and other vintage items as well...

I have an idea... why doesn't someone out there come up with a couple of designs for a generic nuclear worker shirt; something vintage looking and something new.

I laughed at some of the old "t"'s until I realized how old some of mine actually are!

Grabbed one off the bottom of the stack this AM.  "I survived" the "Hazards of Duke". MNS-1 startup coupled with the transshipment of ONS fuel to MNS.  Inspired by an editorial in the Charlotte Observer the morning before MNS-1 initial criticality.

The editorial and IC happened on Saturday morning and the first shirt appeared in the plant Monday AM.

I miss t-shirts.   :(  They aren't prevalent here in the outside world.
