I am hearing talk that Marjorie is submitting and approving resumes at Grand Gulf.  Is she going to be the Site Coordinator this outage?
Title: Re: Talk About: Grand Gulf
Post by: shehane on Nov 27, 2003, 02:56
well, Marjorie just told me she doesn't know anything about it.  she said she was just asking someother techs to submit their resumes.  not sure who the site coordinator is going to be.  if you do go though, stop by the bowling alley and see me.   ;D

Hey Don, let her wake up first before you ask her the tough questions. Besides, I dont think she will be out of Sequoyah before the Grand Gulf Outage starts, TVA has their own Radiography Group and an open position.

I don't appreciate being attacked for no reason.  I don't what you are talking about.  What is the remark about Sequoyah Radiography.  I just working on that for the SGRP.  I don't what you are talking about about the Grand Gulf thing.  I hope you enjoy hurting people for no reason.  I  have always tried to get along with everyone.  And I don't try to hurt people on purpose.  So Please stop attacking me when I don't know what you are talking about.  I just try to be nice to everyone and not bother anyone. Please stop trying to hurt me.

Nice is not snapping your fingers at fellow co-workers, nice is treating people the way you would like to treat people. Unfortunately, most site coordinator types have all the qualities of a snake, and Grand Gulf seems to admire these qualities, deciding to work 6-10's, cut the per diem by $5 and make you pay for parking at the site.

Dont go to Grand Gulf, you will reget the experience.

Without Don, I would still be wondering the streets looking for absolution.

But back to Grand Gulf, according to sources inside the Dark Entergy Organization, they are going to cut every dime until they have you working the outage for free, does not look like a pretty sight.

But the after hours naked party at the Bowling Alley will more that make up for it, I just hope the Site Coordinator is off that night. ;D

grand gulf is slipping back into their old mold.  they will end up running all the returnees off by screwing them with nickel and dime stuff.

p.s. - i can't believe you guys told everybody about the after hours parties!!    :o

Grand Gulf supposedly has had budget cuts and now they are only going to take 22 techs and out of that one jr.
Also they are also only going to take 13 deconners.  Outage there is going to suck.  They are going to work their people like dogs. When will management ever learn that it is the people that do the outage not them.  Grand Gulf has always had trouble staffing and now they want less people to do the outage.  Are they crazy????
People will walk when they get there and find out.  They think they are the first outage of the year. Surprise they aren't.  They will be loosing returnees. Good luck to them.

Post by: retired nuke on Jan 07, 2004, 09:27
I recall in the mid-80's GGNS had this problem, and the RATs would leave for lunch and never return. Had a tech get in the elevator w/ the RP Supv (TOH) and complain that he hadn't had lunch yet (by 1400) and the supv told him he was paid to work, not to take breaks. An hour later the tech that relieved him called to see when he was coming back, and we found out he had left site - no WBC, no goodbye, just left town. I think for RFO3 there was about a 10% returnee rate.
Some lessons have to be learned again..... ;)

8)wow!! all this talk about GGNS and how bad it will be we all make choices so just say no and if they(GGNS) make this mistake and do whatever then they won't learn from it!why should they? ??? as I have been as many others in this wild business we prove to them(the ultilities) it can be done!it doesnt matter how many days the outage is or how few techs they bring in it happpens all the time we do the work and the outage gets done in a timely manner and their house techs and shared folks will help them be a success too and bonus gets awarded :o so what is the true beef about here anyway just don't go if you are the chosen selected few? and if the techs walk after they find out how few they brought in and work their buns off, guess what  does it really matter to them, think about it?????? hopfully they(most plants) will care , but I havent seen it yet  at too many places.... and is it trully just GGNS? ::)think about it,its the nature of this business......... :o
this is just my opinion for whatever that means....I know I am fixing to get eaten alive on this one,so be it..

When I return to a site I do so because I like the people there. Most of them have little or no control over the antics of upper mismanagement. Gone are the days of hide an seek for a grand a week and crashing out for hours on end on a bed of pc's in a cable tray. We are being called apon to do more and more with less and less. Sooner or later we will astound them all by doing it all with absolutly nothing. Then they will look to cut our pay. Ain't corporate greed great? By all means if you don't like it, go somewhere else. There are plenty of other utilities that will be more than happy to abuse you in their own special way. As for myself, I'm a glutton for punishment. You will find my smiling face in its usual corner by the steam tunnel on nightshift come outage time. ;D

We beat our 2003 dose goal by .070 Rem.  Our goal was 34.000Rem.  We finished with 33.930 Rem as recorded by EAD.  Still waiting on TLD's to be read.  Supposedly it is the lowest yearly dose reported from a BWR ever.

i thought i would throw in my two cents worth...
i am sure the "wheel of 40s" is still alive and well at ggns.  it was well designed and very well built. :)  it's too bad that i can't come help but i have heard it's because i am on the "reserve" list.  may someday they will get back down to my name.  wondertech ended up at the steam tunnel because it was the farthest place fromt he conbay control point they could find, allow the two of us from seeing one another all shift if possible.  it's always the trouble makers that get the cushy jobs.  remember to come by and say hi if you do come to the gulf.  it's not the best place to work but it's not the worst.

I will not be going to GGN this year, though I had planned to.  But not because of pay.  The folks there are great to work with.  I will miss you all.

I managed to live through Grand Gulf's most recent outage... not because it was heinous, but rather that I had a hoot.

I weasled my way into the drywell on nights and work for the Super Supervisor known as Harry Nickels....  loced every jump until he punshed me by sending me to RADS... I still don't hold that against them.

Even as fuzzy as the plant was, it was not as crapped up as Riverbend.

I liked the people there.  The area was cheap but if you want better accomadations you have to live in Vicksburg, which is about 25 miles away.  A little on the cowboyish side, but it wasn't as crazy as Calvert this time!  Of course, all GG did was a regular outage, while Calvert was trying to stuff round TSP pegs in square holes.  I don't know if I'd want to be around if GG was trying to do something new like that.  Could be fun.

It was about 15 years ago when I worked as a contract trainer there, had a very positive experience with a SRO-I Management Cert class.  The heat and humiditiy in the summer have to be experienced to believe them.

I did some NRC exams there too, and overall the management seems to be serious about doing things right - for example, if you reported tools laying around near the Diesel, or oil leaks on it, they were genuinely glad to have the information, and when you went back the next day, the problem had been fixed.

I don't know what it's like to do an outage there.

I work at Grand Gulf and would be happy to answer questions you may have.  GGNS is located in a very rural area of MS.  Most of us drive 30 minutes or more to work.  Vicksburg (30 min), Natchez (45 min), Clinton (60 min), Brookhaven (75 min) and Madison (90 min) are a few of the communities people at work commute from.  The public schools in Madison, Clinton and Brookhaven are supposed to be good.  The other communities have good parochial schools.

Hey guys. I've been reading for a bit and figured I'd ask a question or two about Grand Gulf.

I recently interviewed, and was curious how the plant was, how the surrounding area is, and how I can get back in touch with some of the guys I met while there.

I had a late interview and was short on time because I had to catch my flight back to Jackson. Anyhow, I hope to hear back soonish about it.

Thanks!

I finally got word back... I had to call them myself, though. I'll be starting on April 20th, which isn't too far away and I need to find a place to live, pack my stuff up, and get down there. Ugh.

The head of HR at Grand Gulf just had to have a pretty major surgery from what I hear, which is why things got slowed down. If you are waiting, you might want to give them a call.

Now, on to the house hunt...

Very Very Southern - It may be a culture shock to you if you are from up North.

But the cost of living is reasonable, the weather is nice, fishing is great, food too,and if you like blues, it's the capital...

As has been said, the plant itself is located in a very rural area.  The closest city is Vicksburg.  Depending on where you're coming from you might not consider Vicksburg a city at all, but more like a small town.

For travel times you're looking at a 30 to 40 minute drive from Vicksburg depending on where you live.  Natchez is about 45 to 60 minutes away, and Jackson is right around an hour drive.  If you're living in the city now, Jackson will have the things you're used to as far as chain restaurants, movie theaters, etc.

I live in Vicksburg, and can tell you that I really like it here.  It's a neat town, and we're situated where weekend trips to New Orleans, Dallas, Shreveport, Memphis, and Atlanta aren't out of the question.  Maybe a three day weekend to make the trip for some of them worth it, but none of them is more than 6ish hours away.

The cost of living is very reasonable.  I'm paying $800 a month for a three bedroom apartment until I finish license class...  The same apartment where I used to live (Hampton Roads, VA) would have cost well above 1,000 a month.  Houses are much cheaper than what I was used to also.

If you have a wife that works (especially in the medical field), then there's plenty of jobs in the V-burg area.  If you have kids though, I'd pay special attention to the school districts around here...  On average they're not the best, but there are exceptions.

If you're coming from the North expect some culture shock.  It's DEFINITELY not the Northeastern part of the US.  That's not a bad thing though!

I can go on and on, but I won't.  If you have any questions about the area or the plant feel free to PM me.

Jay

I was a house HP there years ago.  Knew it was time for me to go when I started conjugating the verb "to be" as I be, we be and they be .   ;D

Very Very Southern - It may be a culture shock to you if you are from up North.

But the cost of living is reasonable, the weather is nice, fishing is great, food too,and if you like blues, it's the capital...

Good luck
Southern is what I'm used to as I am from Arkansas and have lived here and South Texas (STP area) for most of my life.

I see that Grand Gulf has 13 SRO (or CRS, as it is listed on the website) positions available with an application deadline of 6/30/11. Can anyone tell me when that class starts? I plan to be on terminal from the Navy at the beginning of November and am interested in working at GG, but if the class starts before then I'm out of luck. Thanks in advance for any help.

I think you would be ok.  Once the application period closes, we start interviewing and you have to be onsite 6 months prior to class.  We are looking for quality applicants that are motivated and willing to live in MS. Not someone coming in to get a license and leave.

Thanks for the reply jams. If I were hired at GG I would plan on staying there. Vicksburg is just under four hours away from home, which is perfect. Close enough to visit the family you like, but far enough away that the crazy ones don't show up on your doorstep! I'll revamp my resume and apply.

From what I got today, they are starting GFES in Sept.  That being said, it can't hurt to apply and see what happens.

That is the way it is for us as well. Sorry, I had the GFES info wrong, but if you are interested in training the training manager said to get your resume in, they are looking for instructors.  PM me if you want.

Greetings,

I have a resume (through the Entergy Web site) for: Sr Health Physicist (Nuc)  #Grand Gulf Nuclear Station  (Job# 110346), with a status of "Hiring Manager Review" for almost 2 months now.  Even with the holidays, seems like a long time (even for entergy corporate :D).  Anyone in the area know a status for the job (e.g. filled, pulled, etc)?  Asking here cause the Entergy eRecruit web is NOT very informative.  Thanks in advance

Grand Gulf Has misjudged this EPU outage so bad, They are keeping techs going to Beaver and Palisades until 4/2  Report dates are 4/4. Thats a max of 30 hours to drive 900 miles in two days plus sleep. :'(

The old plantation mentality is back!

This is an Atlantic job. Starting to act like Bartlett

It doesn't sound like an Atlantic problem unless they are saying you have to stay until the 4th or you won't get - whatever!
It also doesn't sound like plantation mentality unless GG is saying, 'we will keep you from getting any other job unless you stay until the 4th.

What a garbage plant! EPU is horribly understaffed. The in-processing at the beginning happened like they just heard about the outage a week prior. Industrial safety is such an afterthought as to be a near non-factor. Dropped items have been a multiple-times-a-day occurrence, some highlights being a 2" square piece of iron falling 20'+ to hit someone on the hardhat and a 3' crowbar falling 20'+ and missing someone by a foot. Admittedly, the dropped items have decreased over time as dropped item prevention actually began to be enforced. No safety stand down ever occurred. Walking around the plant it is clear that there is little to no concern for material upkeep of the facility. Rooms flooded with groundwater, poor lighting everywhere, degraded insulation, rickety scaffolding inspected annually, and filthy floors with debris and dirt everywhere (before the outage started) make it clear that no cost is left uncut when it comes to managing this plant. Pulling apart valves invariably requires soaking with thread lubricant due to excessive rust from poorly maintained leaking valves. This place is a disaster waiting to happen.

This plant is number last on my list of places to return.

Hmm.. I know of stand downs, stand up, 1 pm safety checks... so you are not quite accurate.  Also not accurate about little or no concern for material upkeep  But we can agree to disagree... and you do not hit 500 plus days online not caring about plant condition either....

EPU horribly staffed?  Still have more techs before the outage began than most plants have for their outages, and much better than the Lab side.  As far as the debris and dirt before the outage began, this plant started putting in the new systems long before the outage started, and probably long before you came into in processing.  Speaking of which, when you have ~4500 people for an outage, and a short time to do it, the individual isn't going to get individual attention every moment of the day.  I do agree with the problem of dropped items, but corrections have been made, and the problem, although still present, has dramatically decreased.  It says something for a plant with this many people working for this long to have so few injuries.  I can say that the lighting is a challenge, but we have changed enough light bulbs to fill a B-25 and then some, not to mention the total light change out on the refuel floor.  And lastly, what plant doesn't have water valves that have rust on them from the fact that they are water valves, and some of them haven't been seen since the last shutdown.

Thank you.  I enjoyed my trip to GGN.  I was especially impressed with the site safety committee meeting.

No problem.  I was only in town for a day and a half.  I figured it was a long shot.  Does your wife plan to get a house closer to work, or closer to town?   Most people prefer to be close to town, but I'm not a morning person, and I prefer to be close to work.

I ate at Rusty's while I was there. It was amazing.  It was the first time I have had dill pickled okra or dill pickled string beans.  And the Fillet was out of this world.
