Im a college dropout in navy dep and i just received a letter from the Department of the Navy saying i was selected as a candidate for a nomination to the Naval Academy c/o 2012 and to fill out all this applicant info on usna.com . I was lightly recruited by the academy in high school for basketball and i passed the nuke qualifying test and I am a minority but on the contrary my high school and college grades were not all that. These are the only reasons i would think they would want me to apply because I know this is one of the best schools in the country.Would I go to nuke school first and they pick me up while im training or would i hve to finish the 2 years of school to get picked up? Not that I dont think Im worthy it just seems a little weird. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

Every situation is different. I knew a few people that were picked up in A-school and Power school and didn't leave until the completed prototype, but they were already in and almost done with school. They had to wait for their pleb summer anyways so instead of sitting around they just had them continue to do what they were doing. In your case I would assume they would just send you to the academy. I just wouldn't think they would waste the time and money to train you to just go to the academy and maybe end up doing something else. once you go to the academy and graduate you can do what ever you would like as far as being an officer and you don't have to be a nuke officer. So, I doubt they would send you to nuke school cause there just isn't any point to it.

Simple answer no. You will go to the USNA first complete your years. Then when choosing a desigator/comunity (I think they actualy start that in their thrid year), you may have the option of going for the nuclear power comunity. Just because you qualified for it as a enlisted dosn't mean you will be allowed to do it as a serving line officer. Addtional I think all nuclear officers must interview with NAVSEA 08 (director of nuclear power 4-star)
