Title: Hiring Criteria for Learner OPS
Post by: underpar3535 on Jan 14, 2009, 11:01
I have a question about my experience and the effects that it might have on my chances of being hired in the Learner OPS program. I was in the Navy for 4 years as an Operations Specialist. I have a small amount of college, but I also have credits from my Navy Smart Transcript. I took Physics and Chemistry in High School. I am really anxious about taking the POSS Test but I am wondering that when I do pass if any of these things I have mentioned will hinder my chances of being hired. I feel that I am completely capable and competent enough to be an Operator in the Nuclear Field. If you have any input whether negative or positive I would definitely love to hear it.

If you have to ask the question, then your ego isn't big enough to be an operator.  ;)

Reading some other posts on here it sounds like it is varies between utilities. I know a few members said their utilities have taken kids right out of high school. So this is dependent on the utility, I am taking the POSS on Tuesday and have interned with Exelon and that's how I have gathered all of my information. Another issue that Exelon (I am sure other utilities are as well) is having is finding enough qualified candidates that can pass their required tests (Exelon has both POSS and BSME), so my guess is... If you have any previous operations experience, college science courses, and/or Navy experience (especially navy nuke) and can pass the POSS; there is a very good chance you will get a chance to at least interview. I would focus on the POSS more than anything, I have been studying ASVAB and GRE/GMAT Math workbooks and then I used an online stop watch to time myself on taking the supplied practice POSS. This is critical to learn the pace that is needed to keep up with the time requirements. Best of luck and have more confidence, you will be fine!

Well I just took the POSS Yesterday and passed, all of the information on here was very beneficial. I then proceded to the interview which I think went very well. Now I am just in the waiting stages. The utility I am looking at is Duke Energy.
