One nuke student shot another and killed him:

I'm hoping some of you with the forum skills of a mixed martial artist will...ahhem...enlighten those who think because they're married to a retired/separated nuke that they know what it's like to be in the fleet and to be in the service.
I work in OCTG: drugs were not involved with these kids and there's no reason so far to suspect it was anything but an accident. I'm sending one of my guys to escort the deceased sailor to his hometown and attend the funeral for the family's sake.
That's what the service is about: taking care of our own.

I know absolutely nothing about this, or any of the people involved, however I do know it is absolutely heartbreaking. This spoken by the mom of an active duty soldier......My prayers are with both families and friends of these young sailors.

I have never seen a smart drunk, not even a smart Nuke drunk, and I have seen a lot of them, was one of them. Add a gun, and things get worse. Still a sad event when it happens.

Having seen useless tragedies like this in the past; and now being on the outside looking in I wonder how the Navy will deal with the "staff". I'm sure the Chief, if properly engaged, should have been able to detect a problem with one of his sailors. [Said in the most sarcastic of tones possible]

It is very sad. But, just as NavLi4 said, there will be some sort of knee jerk reaction. I am sure that it will be somewhere along the lines of an "unofficial" policy that students are not allowed to have firearms in their dwellings off-base and if they own firearms they will be "highly encouraged" to store them in the base armory. I am sure that the Staff will be tasked with ensuring that students are "choosing" to not have firearms in their possesion. There will hours of extra training for staff and students over the dangers of underage drinking, guns, and the combination of the two. Once again, the command structure at NPTU will do everything imaginable to try to prevent what was most likely a random act of stupidity that was unlikely able to be foreseen or prevented without uber draconian measures such as those stated above.

Well it goes back to the stupid shall be punished. In this case, the level of punishment far outweighed the level of stupidity for the young man who was killed. I would never wish that pain on anyone's family. I was simply stating my opinion on what would probably come next.
