Title: Female Nuke ELT Chief looking to go Civilian NON-nuke...
Post by: Kassondra_ELT on Apr 20, 2010, 06:14
I will be getting out at my EAOS after 12 years of service to be joining my soon-to-be husband in Hawaii (he's staying in).  I have difficulty justifying getting "THE Thomas Edison degree" while I still have time because, to be honest, I'm looking to change things up.  I couldn't find anything anywhere in the forums about the subject and was looking for some insight.

I will need a job (for my sanity's sake, not so much the income - after 12 years of Navy life, busy is all I can handle!) when I get to Hawaii in late 2011, but have NO idea what I'd be qualified for.  I've taken a couple college classes, but haven't finished any degree plan yet.  I'm hesitant because I do not want to do what I've been doing up to this point.  I'm MTS qualified, but does that transfer to the civilian world?  To be completely honest, I'm looking for a job that no longer robs me of femininity (props to all the ladies that can make it farther without becoming embittered, but I'm pushing 30 and would like to start a family).  I'd spent the year before the navy as an auto mechanic, then my time in as an MM/ELT.

If anyone knows of jobs in Hawaii (Oahu, to be specific) that utilize my PPWS, ELT, MTS and Chief qualifications, please post and help me find some direction.  I'd like to figure this out sooner rather than later, as I'll obviously need some time to get my affairs in order!  Thank you so much for your time!

The biggest company on Oahu that would allow you to utilize MTS, ELT, and chief qualifications would be the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. It is one of the biggest employers in Hawaii. There are a lot of training positions that instruct nuclear and non-nuclear employees in a wide degree of topics. Jobs here also require security clearances.

I second the PHNS recommendation.   Might I suggest STE?

I would suggest RCT, not as much stress as STE and still in a field that you are pretty darned familiar with (SY radcon is very similiar to Navy radcon).  Usually the SY will have chemistry techs too, I would check that out.

As someone who has the TESC degree, I would advocate getting it.  The Navy might not care about the degree, but it still opens many doors that would be closed without it.

If you are really wanting to change things up,then you do not want to be a yard turd. You will still be subjected to alot of the Navy BS you are currently subjected to, just packaged up a little different, and with the obvious new found freedoms of being out. I would say with your expertise in chemistry, this would probably be your best shot if you truly want to depart the nuclear world. You are obviously intelligent and very trainable, I'm sure most employers would consider you a promising new employee. If you were to stay nuclear and stay Hawaii, the yard is about your only option. With your background, you would be pretty high up on the GS pay scale I would think. From my personal experience - I was never all that envious of the yard turds at Portsmouth or Newport News as far as job satisfaction, but I also new I would be out in 6 and not working in a shipyard.Your current mental state in regards to the Navy has to factor into your decision. If you are fried - no yard for you. Thank you for your service,it is truly admirable. Good luck.   MM2/ELT USS NIMITZ CVN 68 1980-1984    BOHICA

If you consider water treatment you can work in or out of shipyards. You have plenty of training and if you want to get away from the rad portion water can do it for you.

Here is a link to a website called "Indeed", it does the search of listings so you don't have to look at Monster, Career Builder etc.

Good luck

I know this plant is going to expand and is probably going to be hiring quite a bit.  It's a WTE (waste to energy) plant so make sure you don't get stuck on the process side.

It's probably important to note that Hawaiian culture is like no other, If you can't fit in with them they won't hire you.

Also check the non-nuke version of STE, I can't think of what it's called off the top of my head. An added benefit to PHNS, if your husband transfers to WA, you can transfer to PSNS. A friend of mine's fiancee did the move from WA to HI when he transferred there.

Another path to check out if $$$$ isn't your primary reason for working is finding a local microbrewery and run water chemistry for them. An ex-ELT buddy of mine is doing that up here and enjoys it a lot.....The pay is not great, but he is married to a medical professional.
