Title: What if I'm a recruiter?
Post by: gamma_ray on Jul 26, 2010, 05:42
Hello all,

Thanks in advance for any information.  I just had a quick question.  If I take a shore duty as a recruiter, will this hurt my chances of being hired at a commercial plant upon separation from the Navy?  If anyone has done this, please provide input.

yes...no...maybe?
Need a little more info.  What background, experience, qualifications, timeframe?  What the employer is really going to care about, above all else, is what did you do with the time/opportunities presented while on shore duty, and what can you add to their organization.  All things being equal, as long as you make good use of your time (i.e. complete a degree...not mandatory just a suggestion) then it can help you.  If you simply coast for the next three years and have nothing to show for your time, then it will hurt you.

Just my opinion
-Matt

Recruiting duty didn't hurt me at all.  Actually, I think it helped.  I spent a lot of time at career fairs/ANS conferences while I was doing NUPOC recruiting.  I was able to do quite a bit of networking and put my resume in the right hands.

It probably won't hurt you getting a job... where it's going to hurt you is the fact that you'll be out of the plant for three years.

It'll be a challenge to keep up your nuclear knowledge. You'll be hired with an expected skill set, so keep that in mind.

Sounds like an opportunity to finish a degree, do some networking, start the job search, ...

It's really my fourth choice.  I'm just trying to get to a certain area so my wife can go to a specific college.  I anticipate being done with my degree before I transfer and intend to work on a master's regardless of where we end up.  Basically, it's radcon tech, OPWACHEM instructor, go to another boat, or recruiter, whichever works out.  I just really want to get to the Seattle area for shore duty so my wife can get the degree she wants.  It certainly sounds like it should be my last choice, and it is.  I just wanted to make sure that when I separate, it wouldn't completely kill my chances of getting into commercial nuclear power.  Thanks to all who responded.  Any further advice on this topic or on how to get to the Seattle area from Groton would be appreciated.
