Title: Jump Start
Post by: NuclearWaste on Jan 20, 2011, 06:12
So my ship date isn't until May fourth, and since everyone on this website seems to know what their talking about, I was just wondering what I should do in order to get a jump start on what's ahead.  Because of my later ship date in the year, I won't be able to take college courses, thus giving me plenty of time to prepair anything that I should be looking forward to.

-Thanks

NuclearWaste,

First of all, thank you for your service.

You should start by browsing through the Navy:Getting In section of the nukeworker forum.  Most, if not all, of your questions have been asked before and there is a wealth of knowledge available there (if you're willing to take the time to find it)

P.S. In navy parlance, "Nuke Waste" is a slightly pejorative term referring to a person who has failed out of nuclear power school.

Practice, or at least read about, time management.  In the Getting:In section you will find a few links to the DoE handbook for nuclear operators, those can be good to GLANCE at.  I emphasize glance so that you get an overview of the information but can still easily solidify the knowledge how NNPTC wants you to, rather than how it is with the DoE.

More than anything though... time management.  The subjects are not that difficult in terms of concepts but it comes quick, and it is completely different from what public schools taught you.  In otherwords while most math problems in school ended in nice little solutions like 1+2x after the correct application of a few different mathmatical concepts, dont be surprised when "simplifying" in nuke school leads to a more complicated looking equation :-)

If you start paying attention to detail in your everyday life now, and try to get into good time management habits, I promise you will be one of the ones having fun on the weekend, and spending the evenings relaxing, rather than constantly stressing out about homework.

Ever since I took my first college semester, time management has been a priority, and on top of that, I'm eager to learn of new things.

Thanks for the link, and the suggestion guys!
