Hello all,
I am a 5 yr Sub LT that is about a quarter of the way through my shore tour. I am not completely sure that I am getting out yet, but I am leaning that way. That being said, I have started looking at my employment prospects, nuclear and otherwise. I have two questions and would be very appreciative of any feedback that you all can provide:
1. I would like to stay connected to the Navy as an officer in the reserves. This would mean one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer. Also, there is the possibility of being activated and sent to Afghanistan, Iraq, or a similar place for up to a year (I will get a two year deployment free period initially). Will this adversely affect my ability to perform as an SRO/NLO/AO and would it affect my chances of being hired in the first place?
2. I have read some of the other posts re. the shift schedules, Is the schedule generally fairly flexible?
Thanks in advance.

most utilities support reserve requirements. At my location, the company "makes whole" reservists on deployment...
Anyplace I've ever been, shift schedule is pretty fixed - some places even have fairly strict guidelines when you can have vacation within your shift schedule.
If you want to be in charge of the plant - you gotta go OPS. OPS is on shift, almost exclusively.
If you don't want shift - go Maintenance...
Thanks for your service, and for your desire to remain in the reserves.

We have two enlisted reservists that work in Ops at our plant (one AUO, one SRO currently in work control). They are able to schedule their reserve time.

I absolutely refuse to cover a shift for reserve duty. The utility is required to provide the time however I am not required to give up my free time to cover it. That's the first thing I tell instant sro's out of the navy.
