I am considering a job at Crystal River. Can anyone give me opinions of the area and of the plant? Good places to live? Schools? I am a bit worried about status of the plant given the containment crack repairs.

Pm me, I spent sow time there and can give you the lowdown.
Great place with good schools. Crack will be fixed. Got here in April 2011.
I want to work at Crystal River as a structural Designer. Can anyone help me with names of job shops? Also, I have heard that the delamination project will be awarded to either Bechtel, Areva/URS, or Shaw. Anyone know when it will be awarded?
Good place to live and work. If you are used to big city then this is not the place. There is a great deal of outdoor activities and the people are just plain damn friendly. I'm out in Citrus Springs, so commute is 20 minutes. Some of the operators live as far away as Tampa, Spring Hill. Your pay will put you in the top 12% so keep that in mind. Plant supposed to be back on in 2014. I'm an ANAO working on ANO. Good Luck on the interview.
Hey Chickenhawk. What is the pay now for ANAO at CR? I hear they are starting a new class soon. Area looks great!
I am interested in working here. Possibly as a SRO. If anyone has any information as to when there next class would be starting, please PM me. Thanks in advance.

Ship has sailed, they already did their process for SRO/STA's as of Jan2012. Posting went out in DEC, closed pretty quickly.
That said, if anyone works here, Id like to pick your brain for a moment please.
Thanks, although I was thinking further in the future. Still have 10 months or so left in the Navy.

Doesnt matter, their next license class wont be for around 2 years from now.
Does anyone know if they have filled their auxillary operator positions for the next training class?

I just realized I know the Ops Manager at Crystal River.
Sad to hear about the end of Crystal River, good luck to all, I enjoyed my time there.

Should be a lot work for years of decomissioning

Should be a lot work for years of decomissioning
From the Duke Energy press release:
QuoteThe company intends to use the SAFSTOR option for decommissioning. Generally, this involves placing the facility into a safe storage configuration, requiring limited staffing to monitor plant conditions, until the eventual dismantling and decontamination activities occur, usually in 40 to 60 years.
Maybe a lot of work for years, but not starting for many years. I don't know about you, but I hope to be retired before '40 to 60 years' comes around.

Many options, all pretty much negotiable with NRC. Critical part short term I would think, would be fuel storage. CR3 doesn't have dry fuel storage at this point (I think...), and it will have to empty the vessel, but could store in the SFP indefinitely.
I got my Open Water cert there, had 2 great outages there in the early 90s, my folks retired near there (Homosassa). It's a nice area, and the folks there are nice. I hope that enough work remains to keep them working.

My wife got her PADI card there in 1981 when we were working an outage. Did my first night dive and first cave dive in King's Bay. Loved the area and the people were great... one of my favorite outages (got some good stories from there.)
I wish everyone there the best. Sad time.
Is Mojica still selling tacos down there? Might put him out of business.

No, he left there several years ago! Last I heard he was in Humbolt Bay.
A few months ago some Navy Hotshots sent me emails about these wonderful jobs they were getting at CR. I told them if they had other offers they should take them first because by the first quarter 2013 CR would be announcing closure of the facility. I based this on history, it doesn't matter how much you've sunk into a plat, it only matters how much MORE you have to sink in when you've lost regulatory margin. Of course they didn't believe me, why should I know anything about the commercial world?
What's the latest? I'm seeing job posts for Sr. Recruiting Specialists for redeployment of the work force. Has Duke decided on the number of people they're keeping/letting go? Are folks bailing?
Plans are to reduce the plant staff by 50% within the next twelve-to-eighteen months.
