I'm not a nuclear engineer, but I'm guessing SiC can be a tiny bit more of a moderator than zirconium. That would make the reactors run slightly less efficiently, but last much longer between changes.  So the bean counters like it.  okay
To me, the chromium-coated fuel pellets scream mixed waste.
