Should have mentioned fission products decay away in 200-300 years (not tens of thousands and they are the only reason for the huge shield casks) and also have many useful applications......and commercial reactors burn the Pu-239 they produce for power during the fuel lifecycle and the Pu left is mostly Pu-240.....a bomb poison.
