It is worth mentioning that the 79 accident was not only the worst in US history, but forty six years later it is still the worst, and oh yeah, the only one. It could be said that the industry wide improvements that came from it had a direct impact on it still being the one and only.

You can add that it was more of a financial/industrial disaster than radiological (to the public). The average exposure to the public within 10 miles was 8 mrem with the highest to an individual was 100 mrem. Poor public education was a contributor to public perception of the severity of the radiological hazards. We have come a long way from settling a lawsuit for radiological damage from an individual stung by an ionized bee, but we still have a long way to go.
