New Iowa Nuke?
« on: May 13, 2013, 02:07 »
THURMAN, Iowa — MidAmerican Energy has allowed an option on land southwest of town to expire, making it unlikely the utility will build a power plant — nuclear or otherwise — in Fremont County.

Probably not. Natural gas prices are so cheap that no one wants to build more nuclear plants right now. We will see what natural gas prices go to if we start exporting to Europe. Then we will see.

Well, we are building 2 at VC Summer, Vogtle is adding 2 at their site, Duke-Progress is moving forward with plans for 2 at Levy County, South Texas is trying (NRC has a problem with foreign ownership) to move their proposed project along, same with Calvert Cliffs Two as well as Dominion in Virginia moving towards possibly adding two more units, off the top of my head.

There are numerous sites in varying stages of progress, quite a few taking a wait-and-see approach while watching the two current new build projects.

Actually, South Texan IS NOT trying.  The foreign ownership WAS.  THAT was the problem.

Levy Count plant is about dead.
Remember who you love. Remember what is sacred. Remember what is true.
Remember that you will die, and that this day is a gift. Remember how you wish to live, may the blessing of the Lord be with you

All of these nuclear plants were already in construction before the natural gas boom started in the US. All the one's post boom have been delayed, sorry for not making that clear.

Concerning Levy County, the last official word I heard was from one of the VPs back in December saying they were moving forward with their plans.

However, that doesn't mean there hasn't been significant talk the other direction since then.  Just stating what I have read or talked about with others.  Others on the inside of Duke-Progress will absolutely have better info.

For South Texas, I was reading on the NRC website last week or week before that that STP was working on several options for the foreign ownership issue.  Honestly though, they have other more pressing concerns at the moment, unfortunately.  :(

From APOG group meeting last week, Duke is still moving forward with plans for Levy County and Lee County in Florida.  Harris County in South Carolina on indefinite hold.  For what it's worth  :D

The prospect for new plants isn't dead.  Most utilities that started the new build process haven't pulled their applications.  Several factors are at play; cheaper natural gas, legal challenges by special interest groups, the whole world watching us and Vogtle build these AP 1000s, etc.

Cost and cheaper alternatives are our major foes in this.

Just to make minor clarifications, Lee is not a county.  It is named after a former CEO of Duke Energy (William "Bill" Lee) and it is located in South Carolina.  Also Harris is not a county.  It is also named after a former important individual in the Carolina Power and Light/Progress company (now Duke Energy).  Also it is located in North Carolina.

The important points of your post are correct and I do not question it.  Was just trying to make sure that people that might not know where these plants were located would not get confused.

Further minor clarifications; there most certainly is a Lee county in Florida. I believe that's what was being referred to in the previous post.
Carry on.

Sorry, I was somewhat confused by ContractSRO's explanation. Got it now.
Lee Nuclear Station, Gaffney, SC.
Levy County proposed site, FL.
Harris Site, New Hill, NC.
