Son in DEP - Mom has questions
« on: Jan 24, 2008, 07:51 »
My 17 year old son went to MEPS with my signed consent form in hand.
He was all revved up to be raising his hand and swearing in, having chosen Nuke as his career field.

When he came home, he was signed up and sworn in, but not with Nuke.
His recruiter, has neglected to tell him that even if the classifier qualified him for Nuke (He did, ASVAB was very high)
He still needed to take the Nuke qualifying test.

Instead of scheduling him to take the test, they signed him up, swore him in, and told him he could change his career field after he took the test.

Is this as easy as MEPS made it sound?  Or was he the target of Bait and Switch?

What are his real options?

Bait and switch.

In order to be a nuke he should know for a fact he's in the club.

He's not obligated for anything at this point, if neither you or he gets a straight deal then walk away.

IIRC there's a couple recruiters here who are straight shooters, maybe they can help.

Thank you for the link.

As someone who spent 10 years Air Force Active Duty, including 7 as a Navy wife,  (5 of them concurrent) I know first hand the trials of the military run around.

Thanks for recommending me fellas.

Hope I answered you questions well enough, Moonquille.  And the rest of the guys are right, the 2nd swear in is official.  If your son doesn't get the job he wants and is qualified for by the time he is supposed to ship, he doesn't have to go.

I am currently in DEP and going into  the nuke field.  I swore in as an AG at meps, then took the nuke test at my recruiting office,  and once i passed it they sent my DAR form up and  in 3 days i was a nuke,  but then again my recruiter is a nuke so maybe he was biased

ok "buddy". You arent a nuke yet kid. IF you make it through (hopefully your attitude will change), then your recruiter gets another point. Normal Jobs only get 1 point. Critical Manning get 2 points. thats why you gain rank (up to E3) if you get a nuke to join with you.

Hope that helps, "buddy".

Until you are qualified you aren't a nuke. You're just a useless NUB and a wannabe.

Mike,
Sorry to disagree with you, but more accurately he would be:

NonQual!
Dink!
Nub!
Puke!
Lower than whale
... uh . . . (er, Mom's still here..right?) Excrement!   :P
FLOB! (Free Loading Oxygen Breather)
Can't stand a watch station!
Eating MY grub!
Drinking MY water!
Breathing MY air!
Uh...  Excreting in my ..uh, Excreter!
Taking up MY rack space!

GET QUALIFIED!!!!

This was said somewhat tongue in cheek, so don't get too steamed.  :'(  But DO get steamed enough to go get qualified so that you are useful to someone for something other than comic relief.

Oh, and Mom...if you're still listening.  Yes, we will talk to your son like this.  :o But the men who talk to him like this will also go to lengths you would not imagine to help him, and mold him into a stronger man.   ;)

Here's a related question...

Are you allowed to retake the NFQT if you don't qualify the first time?

How did he do?

<crossed fingers and awaiting news>

He passed.  But didn't tell me the score.  So now, a bunch more paperwork to fill out.
