Do you know what they do with truly bad mechanics?

They commission them!  That way, they don't ever get touch anything again.

Just to be clear...that is not the case for prior electricians!  ;D

I spent hours on watch studying the Power Plant Manuals. Even to this day I study a system a day including procedures if I have time to do so. It helps.

Have you ever gotten a grade that was lower than a C in college? I did, and I was not accepted to NUPOC even though I was more qualified than someone else who was accepted though he had been in college for only 2 years and was not even seeking a degree in the sciences, whereas I had a Bachelor's Degree in Physics and Mathematics, a waiver from the National Director of the NUPOC Program, a letter of recommendation from a former NUPOC Instructor (who happened to be my high school physics and calculus professor), and the highest ASVAB score that the local representative of the nuclear program had ever seen (I also had a 3.4 GPA and nearly 3 years of research experience in experimental physics when I graduated 6 months before). However, I am now an an enlisted Electronics Technician (the most selective rating in the nuclear field and the only one that is qualified to actually operate a nuclear reactor) and I am quite satisfied with that. If you do plan to go to Washington DC, make sure that you study beforehand - review your general math, physics, and engineering classes, because you will go before a board of engineers and you will have to convince them in half an hour that you are capable of completely solving a complex scientific problem (your recruiter should have a packet of NUPOC study materials for you to use). Also, when you speak to the admiral make sure that you are confident and outright. Admirals do not like hesitaters or bullshitters.

Best of Luck!

To this day, half the skin on the back of my hands is scar tissue from my experience there [nothing like the smell of cooking flesh, only to realize that it's your own].  MGM

I know what you mean! I had a backwards "SARCO" on the palm of my hand for a couple weeks thanks to that feed station!

I had Fisher branded on my forearm for about 2 years, courtesy of Feedstation at A1W.

War Eagle, how's the training going?

We're doing odd jobs in Ops Support until the end of January; then we start "mini-systems" and NAUO quals. Licensing class is supposed to start at the end of June. Right now, I'm the department rep for training in support of the new behavior based safety program that your plant implemented a while ago. Other than that, I'm just taking time to walk down systems and familiarize myself with the plant before formal training starts.

What sort of AUO quals are you doing? If you're doing full blown quals you should propose adopting the Qual Guides I wrote at SQN back when I was going through quals. I refused to do the AUO Quals they gave us simply because I'm never going to be an AUO. Instead I wrote a familiarization guide, which is really what you should be doing.
I was on the team that hammered out the BST Program for TVA. If you need any assistance just ask.

Ya that was what we did, a familiarization "qual card." Its still sitting in the back of my truck filled out waiting to be checked.  ::) Anyway, if they let you, follow a crew around and get out in the field with the NLOs before you class up. Although not as good as being an NLO, it was the next best thing. Without that 6 months with the NLOs, my class would be a lot harder than it already is.

By TVA procedure an Instant SRO has to spend 520 Hours on shift prior to starting License Training. The card I wrote has the SRO going to every part of the plant at least once, plus simulating around 60 tasks at least once. I put in a lot of JPMs that I felt were likely to be on the NRC Exam plus items an SRO should at least know where the AUO is when you send him to do something. I'm a BIG believer in if you're to send someone to an area you should damn well have been there yourself so you know what you're potentially sending them into.

We're just doing a familiarization NAUO card, not the real deal.  I hope you had as much fun with BST as I am having.  We're supposed to start pilot lectures next week when the contractor returns.  Thanks for the offer, Mike, I may hit you up!
