 I worked with a good crew doing a Engineering Backlog Reduction Project for the site.  Finding a place to stay was the worse part, unless you include the roof that leaked when in rained.  The food at the Willows was really outstanding.
  Overall it wasn't a bad place to work, great orientation on their database system, probably the best of any I've ever had.
  By the way, do any of the folks that I worked with read this site?  Give me a shout and let me know your doing great.

Would anyone happen to recall the RadCon foreman Ed Schnell who I worked with at BVPS in the mid-70's?  This was during construction and prior to startup. Lost touch with him many years ago. Any info greatly appreciated.

damfuzzy.... ed (canned ham) schnell left the beav in the 80s.  vogle wuz his landing site,  i believe.  he got into probs there 'n departed. after that i believe he was with vepco, possibly at surrey.  ended up opting out of the biz from there.  rumor has it he's successfully running a string of used car frachises.

Thanks for the info on Ed.  I think I'd even buy a used car from him if he hasn't changed.  I wrote HP procedures for him back before BV startup. Still remember drop testing SRDs (how far?) and lunches across the river on MSA who wanted BV to buy their air packs.  We also worked in a trailer with a then young engineer... Ray Ireland, I believe.  Was a good guy. I think their HP supervisor was a Jack Allingham(?) at that time. Not sure what happened to him.

Overall I had an ok experience there but a real STRONG union plant.  I got three days off without pay or diem when I walked down the hall and picked up a screw driver an electrician dropped.  His helper reported me and they didn't even bother listening to my side.

Hey guys, I'm looking to get into Beaver Valley on a permanent employment level, I'm getting out of the Navy and my wife's family is from just outside Pittsburgh, so we would like to be close to them. Any info as to what headhunter  I would need to talk to about employment up there. I need to contact them soon so I can start any qualifications I'll need to complete before leaving the Navy. KingSmag...Beaver Valley, Perry, and Davis Besse are all part of a parent company FirstEnergy Corp.  Their ability to properly run and maintain nuclear power plants is being seriously questioned.  You may want to watch out what minefield you walk into.  Their people skills also leave a lot to be desired.

I recently completed an outage there. I went with an open mind but expecting the worse. I think they are trying to improve and I actually had a pretty good experience there. Most of the house people said the bad rep was warranted and they had earned it. However, I would go back and did meet a few good people there. I did not care for the area that much, or for the way they do some things, but overall they are much improved. The other first energy plants have been having major problems lately. Now Braidwood....you want to talk about SUCK!! never again my friend...never again.

Rusty, I take it that the braidwood outage didn't go so well. That old comed mentallity still reigns. Beaver Valley has come along way since the early to mid nineties. House personnel are actually involved in the outage and overall they have a real good attitude. Their program has some real weak points and the paperwork is still cumbersome, although nothing like the old work package days. The unions are receptive to rp, and generally are knowledgable about rp practices. The recent outage was the best outage I've done to date and would return in a heartbeat. If you want to find just about anythig musical, Download Kazaa desktop utility (it's free) on your home pc and then enter whatever you want to find in the search engine under audio and it will probably find several copies of whatever you want. Then you just download the Mp3 on your pc (again...free). I found 3 different versions of "Please Come To Boston" a few days ago. Great roadie song.

there used to be a trailer/campsite on rt 18, about 15 minutes from site.  raccon state park has hookups, about 20 minutes from site, but i don't know how long you can stay without moving.  in the fall it could be long enuff to do the job.

I'll try.
Beaver Valley (where I grew up) has a lot of locals who speak Pittsburghese.  Find a translator to help you understand.  The language is a combination of Appalachian Hillbilly and Pennsylvanian.  No good asking the Site Coordinator.  He's a local too.

Here are a few examples:

Mahl = mile  There is no "s" on the plural form.  Example:  The speed limit on site is fy mahl 'n arr.  (five miles an hour)

Arr = hour

Still = steel - the area's biggest export.  Also the flavor of the local tapwater.

Ahya = Ohio - the river that runs past the plant and the state just a few miles to the east.

Ahrn = Iron - The element Fe, or the short name for Iron City Beer.  Both have the same flavor.  This is not to be confused with steel, which is an alloy of Iron, Chromium, Carbon, and other stuff processed in a furnace.  But the yellow tapwater can cause some confusion.  If there is a layer of foam on top, it's the tapwater.

Hoagie = A long sandwich known in other parts of the country as a sub, grinder, or roll wedge.

Mahntneer = Mountaineer - the name of a race track / casino complex in West Virginia a few miles from the plant.

ERF (rhymes with turf) = Emergency Response Facility.

ERFlings = People who work in the ERF

Fahr = fire

Dahn =down

Tahn = town

Dahntahn = downtown

Haahs = House

Maahs = Mouse

Haahsmaahs = Housemouse.

Fahrhaahs = firehouse

Yinz = a local pronunciation of the rural Tennesee contraction You'uns, which means "you ones" - ALWAYS used as the plural form of "You".

Worsh = wash

Aht = out

Aht Aht = Out for a date, dinner, party, or other social engagement - as opposed to going out to a store or for a walk.  Example: Are yinz goin aht aht, er just aht.

Buhruh = borough - a small division of the county with its own taxes, which will be deducted from your paycheck without exception, discussion, exemption or appeal.  If you work there, you'll pay for the priviledge.

There are other things you need to know as well if you want to be safe:

Have good brakes on your car.  Hills are steep and winding near the plant.

There are more deer per square mile in this area than most of the rest of the country.

It is frequently foggy near the plant due to the river and the five cooling towers.  (There is a huge fossil plant next door.)

Beware of the "Pittsburgh Left"!!  This practice can kill you if you don't know about it.
If you are stopped at a red light, and the car coming the opposite way is signalling a left turn (known locally as a lefhan turn), he wll go immediately when the light turns green.  Even though you have the right of way, it is common for people to allow the first car or two to go ahead so as to keep them from tying up traffic.  It has gotten to a point that they expect this.  So if you go as soon as the light turns, without allowing them to turn left, they may very well hit you or you will hit them.  Not everyone does this, but you have to be sure they are going to yield before you enter the intersection.

the Pittsburg left turn is soo right beer court I spent a year there and then went home to washington state and I got a ticket the1st day I was in richland for failure to yeild. good grief I told him I never been stopped for this on the east coast.
