Job description
What You Will Do

As a Health Physicist 3 for LANL you will apply advanced health physics principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to support laboratory needs. You will complete tasks independently, and lead large and/or technically complex projects, ensuring that radiation protection polices and federal regulatory requirements are met. You will assist in the development, delivery and assessment of RP training to include: Radiological Control Technicians, Radiological Workers, Emergency Responder Radiological Training and radiological hazard-specific courses. Supporting and providing oversight for implementation of the LANL RP program, conceptualizing and communicating elements of radiological safety/protection to both technical and non-technical personnel, and developing new processes and procedures based on operations needs are also required of this position. You will provide radiological safety related technical support and guidance to field HP personnel and other LANL customers on a variety of radiological control problems, assessing effectiveness and recommending corrective actions when necessary. Additionally, you will mentor and provide support to less experienced health physicists and technicians.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Advanced-level knowledge of the technical principles, theories, concepts, and techniques of health physics;

Advanced-level skill to conceptualize and communicate fundamental elements of radiological safety/protection to both technical and non-technical personnel;

Advanced-level experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection;

Advanced-level skill in the preparation and presentation of radiological safety/protection reports;

Ability to work independently and lead large and/or technically complex projects in a team environment;

Advanced knowledge of legal requirements affecting radiological safety/protection;

Advanced experience with the development and implementation of programs to meet 10CFR 835, 49 CFR and part 20 requirements.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering or Physical Science, and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in the development and delivery of formal RP-related training;

Experience conducting inspections or assessments of radiological operations or programs;

Working knowledge of the Laboratory’s radiological safety policies, practices, and procedures;

MS in Health Physics, Radiation Protection or related field.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Reading vision; Ability to speak; Ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 htz).

Work Environment: Use of protective clothing, including safety glasses and radiological anti-contamination clothing.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
