Job description
The Nuclear Material Control and Accountability group is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented professional to perform and assure accurate accounting of nuclear material in the LANL nuclear material accounting database to ensure compliance with DOE/NNSA requirements. The successful candidate will perform accounting transactions documenting use of nuclear material in the system of record to track accountable nuclear material. Additional duties include supporting month and year-end reporting to Federal oversight agencies and internal/external audits.

The successful candidate will have the ability understand general nuclear material measurement concepts and general accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

This position will be filled at the MC&A Specialist 1/MC&A Specialist 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Nuclear Material Accountant 1/MC&A Specialist 1 ($69,500 - $110,300)
As a Nuclear Material Accountant, you will be a crucial contributor to National and International safeguards by supporting the timely and accurate performance of transactions in the Los Alamos National Laboratory system of record.

At the lower level, the successful candidate will support more experienced accountants while developing the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform accounting transactions independently. Key responsibilities include:

Independently perform nuclear material transactions
Support month and year-end reporting
Support site-wide rollup activities
Support internal and external audits
Support procedure revisions

Nuclear Material Accountant 2/MC&A Specialist 2 ($83,900 - $136,600)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the key responsibilities are:

Independently perform:
month and year-end reporting
site-wide rollup activities
transaction history research
Peer review
Develop expertise to resolve accounting issue that are low-to-moderately complex

Description of ideal candidate
Bachelor's degree with 2 years related experience in Accounting, Business, or STEM field; or equivalent experience and education (MS; AS + 6 years; No degree + 10 years); the higher-level role will require an additional 3 years' experience. Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.
Experience using numerical data (financial, scientific, inventory, etc.) in software (e.g., software database or Excel) to accurately account for budget or inventory.
Perform Inventory adjustments based on measurements, measurement analysis, and evaluation of item/batch activity. Demonstrated ability to understand and apply the General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) using nuclear material data (e.g., chemical/physical composition and SI Units.)
Demonstrated ability to follow procedures, in-depth problem-solving skills, high attention to detail, questioning attitude, and ability to raise concerns to ensure that accounting activities are consistent with requirements.
Excellent Microsoft Office skills to include intermediate Excel spreadsheet skills for generating reports, presentations, and trending.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Experience identifying low-to-moderately complex data discrepancies, conducting research into the cause/s, analyzing the information, drawing technically defensible/compliant conclusions, and communicating results effectively with various levels of internal stakeholders.
Experience mentoring less experienced staff and/or peers.
