Job description
What You Will Do This position will be filled at either the Radiation Control Tec 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) at Los Alamos National Laboratory provides critical radiological support to the Laboratory

Description of ideal candidate
Radiation Control Tec 3 ($56,600 - $89,900)

The successful candidate will be required to:

Perform routine contamination surveys for removable and total contamination.

Perform external radiation surveys for deep gamma, shallow beta/gamma, and neutron radiation.

Complete surveys for the release of items and equipment from radiological controlled areas.

Perform air sampling and operation of air monitoring equipment.

Participate in the planning of low- and moderate-hazard radiological work with minimal direction or supervision.

Participate in the planning of high-hazard radiological work and provide recommended controls to supervision and persons in charge (PICs).

Perform reviews of air sampling results and report abnormal conditions, including performing appropriate immediate and follow-on actions.

Provide radiation protection support for planned moderate- and high-hazard radiological work with minimal direction.

Complete effective and independent work under complex requirements, including the use of engineered controls such as localized ventilation, confinement, or temporary shielding.

Provide effective responses to control potentially severe or complex off-normal radiological events (e.g., off-site contamination, contamination of multiple individuals, true CAM alarms with personnel exposures, contaminated wounds, etc.) with minimal oversight or supervision.

Provide mentoring to employees and on-the-job training in procedures for radiation monitoring, contamination control, external exposure control, and emergency response, radiation work permits, and facility design.

Radiation Control Tec 4 ($62,800 - $99,800)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the RCT-4 will be required to:

Plan high-hazard radiological work and provide recommended controls to supervision and persons in charge (PICs).

Perform the lead role in implementing improvement actions directed by supervision in demonstrated actions and words.

Assure that radiological controls are correctly applied for radiological work, including high-hazard radiological work, by serving as authorized subject matter experts for the development of radiological work control packages (RWCPs).

Serve as an alternate PIC as needed for routine radiation protection activities.

Serve as the primary point of contact for day-to-day coordination of work planning and execution for an assigned area, program, or facility, including the coordination of efforts of RCTs assigned in the absence of RCT supervisor.

Provide an effective response to unplanned or unscheduled conditions and other factors affecting work scheduling and resource utilization.

Maintain adequate documentation and record-keeping in the assigned area.

Be responsible and accountable for ensuring that RP routine monitoring instructions, including requirements for their performance, documentation, change control, deviations/variances, communication of results, and reporting are completed.

Coordinate with supervision to ensure appropriate resources and work scheduling, as well as the resolution of problems/issues; communicate to supervision and other appropriate personnel any problems/concerns that are beyond the control of the lead RCT.

Provide mentoring and assistance to employees in on-the-job training and in furthering the skills, knowledge, and abilities of RCT co-workers. Set an example for others to follow.
