Primary Purpose of Position

Constellation's Pearl River Plant is looking to hire a Control Room Operator to join its team. The Control Room Operator performs Journey Level work required to operate the site's central cogeneration/steam plant, central chiller plant, steam and chilled water distribution systems, cooling towers, and related equipment without direct supervision. The candidate must possess at a minimum, a High School Diploma with 3+ years' work experience in a power plant, and/or US Navy, merchant shipping environment, or equivalent as applicable. The candidate must have working knowledge of control room procedures, large oil and/or gas fired high pressure (600 and 125 psi) boilers, steam turbine generators, large Electric chillers, steam turbine driven chiller, gas turbine generators, high/low pressure steam auxiliary operations, and cooling towers. Must have knowledge of safe work practices and procedures, operating orders/work permits (lockout-tagout), water treatment, and use of appropriate personal protective equipment.

 

Primary Duties and Accountabilities

  • Produce steam, electric, and chilled water for customers by ensuring the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operation of the generating station.
  • Oversee the operation of plant equipment, including gas turbine generators, steam turbines, high pressure boilers, large steam and electric driven chillers, associated cooling towers, high voltage switchgear, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Perform equipment start up and shutdown activities under normal and emergency operating conditions.
  • Make independent operational decisions to remove equipment from service or continue operations without direct supervision.
  • Coordinate with other departments on unit dispatch, planned and forced outages, and electrical switching activities.
  • Identify, document, and report environmental incidents in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Reinforce compliance with all applicable safety practices, procedures, and governmental regulations, while supporting the development of direct reports.
  • Perform work in a power plant environment, including exposure to heat, noise, high elevations, confined spaces, and operating conditions requiring a valid driver's license.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, climb, talk, hear and use hands.
  • Must be able to work 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and forced overtime
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates degree in technical discipline (engineering, engineering technology, or related science program) OR
  • Ability to work independently / self-starter
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS) is a plus including Honeywell, Siemens, or Niagara
