Alright, as I get closer to getting out of the Navy, I am just curious as to what level clearance someone in the following positions would need. I am curious because there is all of this recent talk about "Q" clearances and am wondering what kind of pain I have to look forward to. Thanks

It is a lot of paperwork to get access to a nuclear plant.  If you're not going to DOE, it's about 10 pages of questions and permission to run your credit report and criminal history.  You'll have to account for your employment and unemployment for as long as five years.
You'll probably have to take the MMPI, be fingerprinted, pee in a jar, ...etc.
They'll send you all the paperwork in advance, and it can take a week or two to process all this crap.  It is totally painless, but they might bug the crap out of you with seemingly stupid questions.  Bring a copy of your DD214, your driver's license and Soc. Sec. card.
If you go from plant to plant, you have to do this all over again at each one except it is a lot shorter depending on if it has been more or less than a year, a month, or a week since you had access to the previous plant.
Once every five years, they do the whole thing over again.
You will have to report any arrest except minor traffic violations even after you get in.

The Q may require you to take a lie detector test.  Always tell the truth even about minor drug use.  Unlike a Nuclear Power plant access the Q will have people actually showing up at peoples houses asking questions, if you have a ex they will ask them questions, if you have enemies they will find them. Always be truthful. This is the most important. I know a person who had a Q for about 20 years and then decided to tell the truth on his update after lying on his initial on subsequent investigations.  He lost his job.

What about if someone had a "involuntary commitment" to a MH/MR hospital? I know on most plant's self diclosure paperwork, you are exempt under "self referrals" Roll Eyes Huh Does anyone have an answer? Grin Wink

So what I gather is... you don't need a Q clearance at a nuke power plant?

Correct....there are a few DOE Clearance levels, L, Q.  NRC has their own clearances and depending where you work you may have to get a DOE Q and an NRC U, which are equivalent.

Based on the very "useful" DOE regulations regarding who needs NRC-U and NRC-R clearances, it appears that ROs, their supervisors and management need "U" clearances, and that most other operators need "R" clearances?

Am I close?
